yes i can. but not from this video tho. when u run them u notice the c40 or the cw40-9 has a deeper bark. since everybody is stating there favorate, my daily driver is a gp38-2 so im partial to the jeeps.
@lotanota I got to disagree! In the second clip, from overhead! There is NO mistake in the differance of the two units, and the sound of the 12 cyl compared to the 16. As for me! I am partial to the sounds of the 567's, but that may be before your time on the railroad. Stay safe out there, and thanks for watching...
@1jackdk Hehehehehe...in my country, we have GM EMD's export model G16, witch has 16-567C engine, and it sure is the best sounding EMD engine.... We also have some JT22 CW-2's, wich have 12-645E3 engines, but the thunder of 567 is sweeter than the whine of 645... Cool video, love it :)
@1jackdk Yes..there is a distinct difference in the "spacing" of the exhaust pulse between the 12 & the 16 cylinder prime movers. Personally, I'm "lover" of all things 2 stroke...when it comes to diesels...and especially in locomotives...EMD forever!!...although, now (sadly) I'm waiting to hear what's to become of the 710 series, now that CAT has managed to get their "claws" into EMD. Is Nothing "sacred" anymore? EMD & 4 cycle just doesn't "sound" right ! No pun intended.
I hate being a young'n. I LOVE the sound of these older GE's taking off and hauling ass. Sure, they may only last 3 seconds at most, but still, they sounded badass.
EMD for efficiency, GE for their unique capability and power, and ALCO for just plain American badass power!
@iceman977th EMD (2 cycle), ALCO the FM's (Fairbanks - Morse) and the old Baldwins (which used Cooper / Bessemer prime movers) are the ONLY True American MADE Locomotives with USA designed and built Prime Movers. GE, on the other hand uses German designed Deutz Prime Movers built under license for GE. Fairbanks Morse is still in business, but not in Locomotive Mfg. Baldwin is gone, as is ALCO of course, though ALCO "existed" for a short time in Canada under the MLW name.
got anything with the old DEEX thrall gons with red tips? i used to see those go up the Logan Sub in WV when I was about 6. last time i saw one it had a brand new YN2 CW40-8 set on it. That was the last time I saw that train.
EMD made better locomotives until the SD70Ace (pretty much when GM sold EMD). The gevo is pretty cool, but nothing like an SD40 series or even as late as the SD70 series. The dash 8's were dope tho too i'll admit.
Good video. Here in Ireland we have some EMD 12-645 powered locomotives. They are classed as the 071 Class, there are a good few videos posted up on this site. Check 'em out!!!!
The cylinders fire evenly. Part of the sound is simply because it's a 4-stroke engine, but it's also related to the articulated "master/slave" arrangement of the connecting rods in the GE FDL engine. This is a slightly asymmetrical design that leads to small differences in the stroke between cylinders.
EMD engines, aside from being 2-stroke, have simple (non-articulated) connecting rods.
I do too except i am not much of a fan of the newer engines like the ES44DC i love the older engines myself one of my favorite GE engine is the C30-7.
@BNSF9250 They don't suck all that much bro. I have to ride in em! Try putting a train together at Detroit Rougemere Yard in a blizzard. Once on the mainline in a standard cab you're getting hit in the face by more cold air leaking through every crack. Remember, I have to all the way to Toledo like this. GEVOs are toaster ovens lol, and our heavyweight versions are extremely powerful and reliable. Rail fans don't know how reliable they are because they don't run'em.
@csx5400 i guess i was vbeing narrow minded and only thinking in the railfan point of view. well i hope you stay safe on those rails man. that job can be dangerous and is respeciable.
The first clip is S/B at Denbow, second at Carksville. Both spots are S of Brownsville, N of Waynesburg, PA. Hope this helps you out. Thamks for watching. Jackmp294
I'll have to edit more stuff. Got lots of video with the MGA GP38's and Super 7's. DE trains, and the WEPX trains also. All before the Conrail takeover. Take care...
Hopefully you're talking about the WEPX with the older CSX power. There used to be some old Chessie and C&NW power on those trains. As for the Super 7's, there are hardly any videos of them around.
YES! YES! & YES! WEPX with Ches-CNW-CLINCHFIELD SBD, Super 7's with the GE demo's when they where tested, and the MGA's brand new. I have hours of that stuff. I'll have to dig into that stuff.
Your right Rob. Both units are built be GE, (General Electic) There where only 10, C32-8's built in 1984. Conrail got all 10. They where 3200hp with 12 cylinders. Built in the late 1980's, the C40-8 had 4000hp with 16 cylinders. Thats why the difference in the sound. The 12 cylinder sounds slower than the faster reving 16 cylinder engine. Take care, Jack
NEAT!!! My son just found a used one already done in a local hobby shop in Greensburg. Its 6612. That has got to be one of my favorite GE's. Kinda looks like an ALCO. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294
They certainly didnt make C32-8 's cab fit with the rest of the motor at that time.
Landaux 3 months ago
I can hear the difference, and yet, the C32-8 sounds like it's in better condition compared to the newer dash-8.

When the train goes under the overpass you can actually hear the C40-8 reving faster than the C32-8.

This must be quite old because the C32-8s were reassigned as the ballast trains and repainted grey.
My favorite GE locomotive is the C40-8 w/ the narrow cab. My favorite EMD is a SD80MAC.

Well they both have a burbling sound!
Four stroke engines are just one engine.
EMD's two stroke engine if it has 16 cylinders those are 16 engines in one, every cylinder works on it's own.

Awesome horn!!

The reason for the exhaust note of GE & Alco locomotives is that they use a 4 cycle diesel engine, where as EMD locomotives use a 2 cycle diesel.

Great sound, very clear passing under the bridge. How come the GEs stutter, do they fire several cylinders at the same time?
ZetanCrisp 2 years ago 2
..........or is each 'stutter' just one the sound of one cylinder firing?

The engines sound different because they are turning at a different rpm, but it has nothing do with the number of cylinders in this case.
I believe the C32-8 and C40-8 have different rpm settings in each throttle notch (later GE units keep a constant rpm over several throttle notches).
If you heard them both in run-8, they would be turning at the same speed, and the exhaust chugging would sound the same.

Excellent video Jack, to my untrained ears the first loco sounded smoother and the second had more of a growl....Bob
