I'm glad they returned to the 2D side scrolling game play which makes for a nice throwback to the Mario games a lot of us grew up with. I assume the characters are actually 3D instead of sprites based on 3D images which is a great upgrade for a Side scroller. As for why this isn't on the N64 or Gamecube, I don't think the multilayer function would run very fast on those platforms but I could be wrong.

Nintendo's previous consoles had nowhere enough power to run this game.

Also these graphics far surpass N64 graphics and the GC cell proccesser wouldn't be able to handle all of these players and enmies on the screen.

I didn't mean looking just like this obviously but i mean its a side scroller, generally you're lookin for good gameplay versus good graphics so no reason they couldn't scale the graphics down and put it on a prev. gen console. I don't know I mean its a mario game so it'll sell regardless just not crazy innovative. Whatever I used to love nintendo but I don't own a wii so this won't affect me either way just my two cents.
