Sorry, but this 'trainer' doesn't seem to have much experience. When you are out there, a sharp knife is one of the most important things. Therefore you never, I repeat NEVER, use the sharp edge of your blade on a fire steel. Using you knifes back works properly too and you blade stays sharp.
diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick headdddddddddddddd for one its called flint i know who wud know that it has another name utha then metal match and another thin dick head u dont light it with a knife ur gona use
That is a light my fire firesteel, you can get them anywhere that sells camping/outdoor/survival stuff.
There are a lot of types and brands, they are called Swedish firesteels, UST makes one called a blastmatch that is one handed use and has a built in striker.
I do wish Discovery would load these things over several days and not dump them on us all at once. Its almost enough to make me want to cancel my subscription.
Think of all the people who never knew their lip balm could have saved them. Why did they bring it in the first place? Were they thinking "Well, I might be lost in the woods freezing and without food, but at least my lips can be nice and supple for when they find my skeleton in 28 years!"?
The "something else" is a really soft iron, they call it a metal match. What the knife does is that it strips the metal match of some of its surface, and due to friction, the specks of the metal match that was removed become red hot, and as the sparks hit the cotton, or whatever, it starts a flame.
A spark stick (thing) is very useful, however cotton balls soaked in flammable liquid seems a little overdone. Yes it's easier, but if you're traveling light it's just extra stuff to think about (they don't like water I guess)
just bring lighter b4 u go camp jesus how hard can that be? if this is about survivor then he should show us how to make fire without those fancy stuff....only use object sround him in the wild idk about knife and lip chaps and cotton balls...if u can pack those why not bring light with you?

Again, Im not really impressed. Not any metal will make such a massive spark by being clicked against a knife.

Just spend $20 on a UST Blastmatch. One handed operation, and savage.
generalsaam 2 years ago
dont use the sharp part of the knife...it will screw the knife up...use the back
survivalist911 2 years ago 5
Fool used the sharp side of his knife, how to ruin the edge.
The spine would have worked just as well.

its called magnesium. its a very flammable metal.
killeninicent 2 years ago
Magnesium is not very flammable lol. It burns hot but it's REALLY hard to light.
d0md0mt0mt0m 2 years ago
not really every time i have used a flint n steel the magnesium always lights i have never had a problem with it
killeninicent 2 years ago
he used a flint and when grinded with a knife it creates a spark and there is usually magnesium on the other side to help you lite the tinder
killeninicent 2 years ago
All comments bellow are mostly correct but wrong, it is called a Ferrocerium rod or Ferri Rod also called (Auermetall).
It is not Magnesium, although they can sometimes have it in it, and it is not soft iron at all.
They are a combination of Iron, Cerium, and other heavy metals.
You can buy them in any store that sells outdoors material, commonly called a Swedish Firesteel, Light My Fire Firesteel, Blastmatch, etc.
QuietBearr 2 years ago
Iron: 19%
Cerium: 38%
Lanthanum: 22%
Neodymium: 4%
Praseodymium: 4%
Magnesium: 4%

TGFTH 2 years ago
lighters do not work when wet, and the gas can run out eventually, that is why it is important to learn other methods.
QuietBearr 2 years ago
Fail for him to use the sharpend edge of his knife.
