In general, it's good for investigating language. One of my EFL students asked me if "headquarters" is singular or plural. I googled "headquarters is" and "headquarters are". There were millions of hits for each, but twice as many for "are." This tells us that both are acceptable, but "are" is twice as frequent, at least on the web.

I translate and proofread texts. Sometimes the subject is something I'm not an expert in. In that case I come up with what I think is a correct translation or phrase, then google it in quotation marks. If I get 17 hits, it's probably not OK, but if I get 17,000,000, it's probably OK, in the sense that it's something commonly used.
