Well, to be honest, it satirizes many American aspects of that day...but c'mon it's a very enjoyable video(Annie has amazing acting skills) and of course it's a very nice song:)
This video was a mirror held up to a particular culture at a particular time. Britain has always had a healthy sense of the ridiculous. We see it in ourselves and we see it in others. This video is in essence a friendly piece of joshing. It's not anti-American at all.
I think they are singing not about America itself, but the so called "American dream" which is spread all over the world. It's about the shallow and material way of living. And, sorry, folks, I travel a lot and sometimes it's easy to guess which travelers are americans - give me this, give me that, there are my services, I paid for that, I want to have phoooooto in front of this big building, there is my phooooto... :)
@jeff38de Thank God, in this sea of chaos there still exist people with healthy point of view and right priorities. Before reading your comment i had completely lost faith in human - Annie as a cheerleader looks hot as hell, and they even didn't paid attention! Really, nowadays our society completely lost system of values.
I am proud to be from the USA. I will take living here in America on many bad days then to live ANYWHERE else in the world! Our president is NOT the leader of the world. He is our President and that is it.
Although Annie is Scottish and lives in France, Eurythmics made 90% of their money in America. If it weren't for America, the English would be speaking German! "You know we never did anything...." WTF?
359k Americans sacrificed their lives in WWII and I'm proud of 'em; however, 27 million Russians sacrificed their lives in the same war and if it wasn't for THEM, we'd all be speaking German. Learn yer history, ya fucking idiot and stop believing the propoganda yer taught in school.
Oh yeh, BTW, you were three years late for it - coalition of the willing my ass lol. Yer full of shit.
I like this video and believe Eurythmics are talented, but it's hypocritical to demonize the very aspects of a culture that made their success possible.
Yes in a way I agree, for sure. But you have to remember, they are not American, and I'm pretty sure neither of them live here even though they've both been here many a time. I guess the only way to know exactly what their thoughts behind writing this were would be to ask them. LOL
I love the song, i love the video the most. Very true. Go to frame 3.00 of the timeline, that's very funny. I agree with the majority of the comments but I don't excuse people who hate US because jealous of their power. I just hate pop culture or anything which is superficial. That's U.S. and us who worship consumerism culture. Long live to dream!!!

I'm sorry you feel that way. Please try not to generalize though and remember: not all Americans are "shit"; we are people just like you with feelings, dreams, talents and all of that. We cannot atone for the past mistakes of our leaders but the best we can do is apologize to the rest of the world for our offenses (wherever it's warranted).
I didn't feel very lucky living in Vienna for 3 years. I couldn't vaccuum or make toast without unplugging every other appliance first. My Austrian friends considered my flat to be luxurious. I can't imagine what life is like for Europeans without "luxury". Thank God I'm a spoiled American. I don't deserve it but I certainly do appreciate it.
But to compare: I always had to grin when I needed to plug in my coffee machine "the right way" in Menlo Park in 2005, and when I had to post paper cheques to pay for electricity, when Austrian banking had used electronic banking at least 10 years before. So it's all relative :P
It was '92 - '95 and I was so home sick for American Suburbia. Perhaps it was my first time in such an old city and the culture shock. I was young too.
It's also important to remember that this video is almost 20 years old, made at the end of the Reagan era, a time when the world was not too happy with us (sadly, quite a bit like today). I think people in Europe were sick and tired of hearing how great the US was (not that it isn't), but wanted a break from having our culture jammed down their throats.

It makes me laugh how people take this song and video so seriously.... its called British humour and I guess only intelligent people will appreciate it.
OMG everyone is taking this video too seriously the Eurythmics did not mean to do this video to offend it was an essential part ofthe song the reason that they did the whole song was to show that the US was the most powerful state and had a massive influence it shows the problems with us all not just Americans the song is brilliant fair enough many may not think that they are as good as beatles/sinatra but i'd prefer to listen to the eurythmics who like to tackle problems
...just frustrating bc i can c u could hv had & even now very soon could hv so much better leaders 4 your country. I'm afraid of being dissappointed again. From a European point of view everything seems so simple: just elect the Democratic candidate 4 a president! Your nation is difficult 2 understand, but well, so is mine! haha;D Ppl in every nation hv their peculiarities & quirks & annoying/irritating/puzzling views. I don't hate Americans; USA is fine. With warts and all-just like all of us!
It should not be Called "America"Its name is The United States of America, the word "of" is the key word, here of = Pertaining to, belonging to, part of!!! America is a continent formed by various Countries Most of them are Latin "American" Countries, The Question is WHY only if you Posses a US Passport you can travel abroad, and nothing is else is required, but only with an US Passport!!! Anyone know any other country or countries who enjoy this AMAZING PRIVILEGE?
Hmm... I felt like apologizing bc I was mouthing off like a madwoman/bitch... It's not all so black and white... Every nation has its flaws, just like every nation. Yes, as u said and as I wrote hmmh USA has its flaws too. But I forgot 2 mention how USA has enriched our culture as well! (Our=the whole world's) Literature, art, movies, popular culture... This world would not be the same without Americans. Huge country with huge amounts of talent!I for one don't hate Americans! No way. It's just
I live in Georgia USA, and the Beauty of the USA it's the variety, This is Planet Earth and we are human Beings, What We all need to do is work together for all nations to have Human Quality of Life, just like Developed countries Have done it! Use time wisely, use energies and Power for good, so that WE ALL Make this World a better place to live, Dont you think?
Yeah, the screen names - I noticed that too (well, obviously!). And I TOTALLY agree with everything u say! Absolutely, 100 %. Indeed countries, and boundaries, and borders written on maps have never meant much to me... Bc we are all ONE, like u said, all human beings, living on the planet earth - who cares what nationality we are, as long as we try to understand each other (not judge or ridicule, i'm sorry for that...) and really and truly get along and indeed try to save this planet of ours...
...and keep repeating God Bless America while they send more ppl to fight wars so that the owners of factories making military equipment like guns and tanks keep getting richer. And I bet you won't be able to vote for Obama for your next president. Bc the reaction of Americans seem to be: oh, we've got an intelligent person striving to be a president - hey, let's vote for the idiot instead!
The Nobel Peace Prize winner 2008 is our ex-president (now we have a WOMAN as a president) and he did more for FREEDOM than your sanctimonius Bush-presidents have ever even dreamt of. Let them eat pretzels and
Free world indeed. Some ppl across the pond seem to hv failed to notice that very few countries are Communist countries anymore, and the ones that used to be got out of the communist regime without much help from USA.
Well, I guess Mickey Mouse will one day give you that - put simply enough for even your president to understand! That is SO what this video is about! Free world indeed - what do we owe the USA? Stupid TV-programmes and narrow-mindedness.
...all the things that make so many of us Europeans laugh and shake our heads in disbelief and say "only in America!". The religious fanatism, obsession with celebrities, the shallowness of the whole culture very young compared to all the history & culture in Europe. No wonder Americans r upset bc this is not serious social commentary on USA! Oh well, u didn't happen 2 notice it's a music video, then? :D So Americans want music videos 2 provide serious deep profound social commentary?
Oh yeah, God bless America! And the "free world" owes a lot to the USA? Which free world? My country doesn't owe anything to USA. My grandfather was one of the thousands of men who fought against Russians to keep our independence - where was USA then? Nowhere near. USA is an example of freedom? Yeah, sure. Bc Americans in all states are so tolerant of racial and sexual minorities, and women's rights are in high regard, yes, we all owe soooo much to USA. This video encapsulated in a funny way all
I must admit, I have never in 35 years of life thought about that!!!! LOL That is sad, I know!! I don't know why they came up with that. But remember, someone ELSE did, and many of us just say it like any other country has their sayings, because we're used to it. And of course to some of us it has much meaning I am sure.
We were watching MTV in a bar in Venice (Italy),when this video started playing.I said to my wife I was surprised this ever got any playtime in USA. Didn't the Americans realise that it was a satirical statement about the place of US and its own society in the world today.
Any society has excesses. When there is a video encaptulating all excesses in 3 minutes, of courrse it looks bad. I think this is a fantastic video. Some truths hurt but the free world owes a lot to the United States. God Bless America.
Personally, I think they were just playing around with images of negative American stereotypes (the ultimate capitalists) and imagery, in an artsy way, rather than meaning serious criticism of the U.S.
Some people need to relax. I'm an American and I think this is humorous. You can't deny that there's AT LEAST a degree of truth to this. Besides, you can't very well complain if YOU aren't doing SOMETHING to make the situation you're unhappy with any better. I'll bet most of you have put more effort into bitching here on YouTube than actually trying to hlep make better whatever it is you're so incredibly worked up about. EVERY country has issues. STOP pointing fingers - I's as useful as WAR.
we aren't self obsessed! We just know we have the best of everything in this great country of ours! By the way alot of my relatives came from your country!
The best at war, the best at race relations, the best at holding people in prison without trail, the best at caring for your own after a natural disater (New Orleans) the best in the history of slaves, one of the best for murders, the best for teen gun crime, the best for the homeless. Wow, god yeah, your right, America reilly is the BEST. Well done.
As former Prime minister of Great Britian recently said when asked why he had such faith in America by a member of the British Parliment. Tony replied when you have more people wanting to leave theri countries to come to America and less wanting to leave thats all the proof I need! Have you ever been to the USA KC? We are gonna have a first real soon! A Black president!
I have been to the US many times, and to most of the rest of the world too, as fpr what ever a British prime minister may or may not say, has really nothig to do with me as he is not my prime minister, I am Irish after all. It was also comments such as that which cost him his job and made the British public wnat him out of his job. Regardless of whatever self obessed Americans may wish to believe, there are reasons why almost every other country in the world hates you.
Well K.C say what you will. I feel this way. How many countries have we helped out over the years? Africa the former West Germany to name a few. Anytime there is trouble in the world who do other countries call on? AMERICA! My Great Grandfathers parent were from Cavan Ireland. They left during the potato famine. So being Irish/Catholic they left there for a better life! SO It can't be all bad here because NONE of my relatives have wanted to go back!
Im sure none of their relatives in Ireland wanted them to return either. Ofcourse that was 200 years ago, perhaps you should get with the times. To help one country while invading another is as unjust as murdering one person and not another and is something you should not be proud of. If you know about the Irish famine you will know it was largely caused by one powerful country taking from a smaller weaker country. History has set its judgement on that as it will on America in time.
Well we are not perfect by any means but we STILL have people coming here from all over the world everyday! Why? Because they want a better life! One last thing KC if you ever come to America again I am inviting you to come and vist THE REAL AMERICA! The men and women I work with in the Dept of Sanitation! We all work hard for a living and are of different colors, religions and nationalitys! Come see how we make a living everyday! I myself have one church (Catholic), and one country AMERICA!
Again most people are comming to america! Few are leaving! And what other country can say that? I have 2 workers who work for us one is from Africa and the other is from Puerto Rico! Our Late Supervisor was Canadian! And shortly before he died BECAME AN AMERICAN citizen!
Oh and you are not the first country in the world to have a black leader or a female leader either. You may make alot more of a fuss over it but look it up Paddy, you slightly behind the times when it comes to having anthing other then a white middle gaged male leader.
check this comment in a few months time paddywagon,,,You wont have a blk president or a woman president it will be MCAIN by the way the uk (the 4th biggest economy and 4th most pwerful nation)had a female PM over 20 yrs ago and a jewish pm over 100 yrs ago.
I don't know if you're talking about people in our government saying that, or the everyday citizens. I DO know I don't know ANYONE, nor have I met anyone in recent years (Americans) who have said they thought our President was the leader of the world. I sure as heck don't think that! LOL
The President of the USA is often referred to by americans as the leader of the free world, this is not a new thing but it is something that americans seem to enjoy saying
that is the problem with the usa we help the rest of the planet but when it comes to issues at home it seems that the goverment does not do a thing the meaning in this song was true in 1989 and still true in 2009(yes i am from usa)
niciest women I ever met. Annie is still my favourite performer. Very professional and still in good shape (used to fitness 3h/day, still running Annie?) Greetz from Trax
So c'mon darling There's a big moon in the sky We're gonna build a little satellite We're gonna make it fly We're gonna send it up to heaven All the way to the stars And all of them aliens Are gonna find out who we are We're talking''bout the King and queen of America ...
I absolutley love this song and video!! I play it over and over again. Love the ending of the song when she waling so typicle that only she can do. Looking forward to Annies new upcoming album!
This song wasn't really all that incendiary, they were just poking lighthearted fun at America. Many Europeans really enjoy insulting Americans these days. Its usually the same narrative: Americans are semi-retarded, overweight rednecks who whip out guns at the slightest provocation.
What hypocrisy. They didn't mind taking all the millions of dollars and awards they received in America. They need a refresher course in history. If not for the U.S., Europe, including Britain would be Germany now.And the government would not allow them to make their music freely.
The US gave money so they didn't have to get involved with the combat. Only when it hit them hard with Pearl Harbour did they actually physically get involved.
Took the US a long time to actually enter a war back then...
Exactly! But I myself just think it's a video talking about the excess of the 80's! However from the Beatles and all the groups from England have all made much more money in the USA then anywhere else in the world! Then alot of those stars have relocated to the US in recent years. Richie Blackmore of Rainbow/Deep Purple and Peter Frampton among others have moved to the US. Why? Hell we have the best of everything in this country!
I have just about heard of the pop stars you mentioned paddywagon,, but the ones everyone as heard of Mcartney Jagger Pink Floyd Madonna Clapton all live in UK
Steve Winwood another Brit that has decided to live in the US. As well as William Broad AKA Billy Idol! By the way most of Clapton, Mc Cartney, and Lennons influences were American country music! Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins to name a few!
OH yea the lead singer with flock of seaguls lives there as well........starting to see the bigger picture now,,,if your career is over and your a nomark you live in the USA other wise you live in the country thats as the world capital in it,,, UK!
Well didn't the Rolling Stones ride across the Brooklyn Bridge doing a promo for their new cd at the time! That was back around 95 I think! They said that they had NYC to thank for all of their success!
Steve Winwood another Brit that has decided to live in the US. As well as William Broad AKA Billy Idol! By the way most of Clapton, Mc Cartney, and Lennons influences were American country music! Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins to name a few!

It is sad that the extreme sterotypes of Americans portrayed here give many more pragmatic Americans a bad name abroad.

...just frustrating bc i can c u could hv had & even now very soon could hv so much better leaders 4 your country.

No wonder why We are hated.
ArielJeral 3 years ago
No way. It's just

It's funny our Screen names are Very similar.
ArielJeral 3 years ago

Free world indeed. Some ppl across the pond seem to hv failed to notice that very few countries are Communist countries anymore, and the ones that used to be got out of the communist regime without much help from USA.
ArielApollonia 3 years ago 2
Well, I guess Mickey Mouse will one day give you that - put simply enough for even your president to understand! That is SO what this video is about! Free world indeed - what do we owe the USA? Stupid TV-programmes and narrow-mindedness.
ArielApollonia 3 years ago
...all the things that make so many of us Europeans laugh and shake our heads in disbelief and say "only in America!".
ArielApollonia 3 years ago
Oh yeah, God bless America! And the "free world" owes a lot to the USA? Which free world? My country doesn't owe anything to USA. My grandfather was one of the thousands of men who fought against Russians to keep our independence - where was USA then? Nowhere near. USA is an example of freedom? Yeah, sure. Bc Americans in all states are so tolerant of racial and sexual minorities, and women's rights are in high regard, yes, we all owe soooo much to USA. This video encapsulated in a funny way all

Why do Americans continually cry out "God bless America"? Do they really think that God will favour them above all others. Get a grip.
ozinmanc 3 years ago 5
I must admit, I have never in 35 years of life thought about that!!!! LOL That is sad, I know!! I don't know why they came up with that. But remember, someone ELSE did, and many of us just say it like any other country has their sayings, because we're used to it. And of course to some of us it has much meaning I am sure.
tall32guy 2 years ago
I hope you weren't offended by what I said. I only meant it as a response to all those getting worked up over a song and hurling abuse at each other.
My real question is, Who is the queen of America? Is it Bobby Trendy?
ozinmanc 2 years ago
We were watching MTV in a bar in Venice (Italy),when this video started playing.I said to my wife I was surprised this ever got any playtime in USA. Didn't the Americans realise that it was a satirical statement about the place of US and its own society in the world today.
prosperoj 3 years ago
Any society has excesses. When there is a video encaptulating all excesses in 3 minutes, of courrse it looks bad. I think this is a fantastic video. Some truths hurt but the free world owes a lot to the United States. God Bless America.
PRICEJAMES 3 years ago 2
I think it's a great video. I think Annie Lennox is a wonderful singer and a seriously sexy lady.
The people in the bar kept turning round and looking at my wife who looks exactly like Annie did in the video!
prosperoj 3 years ago
As I remember, this got a fair amount of play on MTV etc. when the Album it was on (We Too are One) was first released.
Somehow, I don't think it would ever see the light of a TV screen if it were debuting today in the good ole U S of A.
Funny how satire from nearly two decades ago is even more biting today.

Personally, I think they were just playing around with images of negative American stereotypes (the ultimate capitalists) and imagery, in an artsy way, rather than meaning serious criticism of the U.S.
guarddog22 3 years ago
Some people need to relax. I'm an American and I think this is humorous. You can't deny that there's AT LEAST a degree of truth to this. Besides, you can't very well complain if YOU aren't doing SOMETHING to make the situation you're unhappy with any better. I'll bet most of you have put more effort into bitching here on YouTube than actually trying to hlep make better whatever it is you're so incredibly worked up about. EVERY country has issues. STOP pointing fingers - I's as useful as WAR.

A Black president!
thepaddywagonishere 3 years ago
I have been to the US many times, and to most of the rest of the world too, as fpr what ever a British prime minister may or may not say, has really nothig to do with me as he is not my prime minister, I am Irish after all. It was also comments such as that which cost him his job and made the British public wnat him out of his job. Regardless of whatever self obessed Americans may wish to believe, there are reasons why almost every other country in the world hates you.
kcirish 3 years ago
Well K.C say what you will. I feel this way. How many countries have we helped out over the years? Africa the former West Germany to name a few. Anytime there is trouble in the world who do other countries call on? AMERICA! My Great Grandfathers parent were from Cavan Ireland. They left during the potato famine. So being Irish/Catholic they left there for a better life! SO It can't be all bad here because NONE of my relatives have wanted to go back!
thepaddywagonishere 3 years ago
Im sure none of their relatives in Ireland wanted them to return either. Ofcourse that was 200 years ago, perhaps you should get with the times. To help one country while invading another is as unjust as murdering one person and not another and is something you should not be proud of. If you know about the Irish famine you will know it was largely caused by one powerful country taking from a smaller weaker country. History has set its judgement on that as it will on America in time.
kcirish 3 years ago
Well we are not perfect by any means but we STILL have people coming here from all over the world everyday! Why? Because they want a better life! One last thing KC if you ever come to America again I am inviting you to come and vist THE REAL AMERICA! The men and women I work with in the Dept of Sanitation! We all work hard for a living and are of different colors, religions and nationalitys! Come see how we make a living everyday! I myself have one church (Catholic), and one country AMERICA!

Oh and you are not the first country in the world to have a black leader or a female leader either. You may make alot more of a fuss over it but look it up Paddy, you slightly behind the times when it comes to having anthing other then a white middle gaged male leader.

Let's hear it for the

European criticisms of America is really tame when compared to the dark and ominous conspiracy theories of left-wing Americans.
evilaggression 4 years ago
This song wasn't really all that incendiary, they were just poking lighthearted fun at America. Many Europeans really enjoy insulting Americans these days. Its usually the same narrative: Americans are semi-retarded, overweight rednecks who whip out guns at the slightest provocation.
evilaggression 4 years ago
What hypocrisy. They didn't mind taking all the millions of dollars and awards they received in America. They need a refresher course in history. If not for the U.S., Europe, including Britain would be Germany now.And the government would not allow them to make their music freely.

Americans are extremely disillusioned.
