just flew in an md-80 from Cabo to Ord. Love the plane! Love the configuration of seats with the 2 and 3. I will miss them when American replaces them with 737's...
The "horn" you hear is a trim in motion indicator letting the pilots know that the elevator trim is causing the elevator to move. After a while you get used to the sound and becomes part of the positive feedback that a normal flight is taking place.
The "scary yellow wheel with teeth" is the manual pressurization wheel. If the automatic pressuization system fails the pilots push down and the "teeth" engage the mechanism that allows the pilots to move the outflow valve.
@je14100 There's a Universal GPS Unit. No performace data though so NAV only. It can be coupled with the Flight Guidance and flown in NAV mode. The Radar screen is the display for TCAS, RADAR, NAV and Terrain information. Including a neat 3D terrain feature ;-)
@TheGreatFlyer The door did not latch properly when it was closed. It unlatched during acceleration and vibration forces during takeoff. Those reinforced doors are very heavy.
That sound is made by the autothrottle clutches when fine tuning the throttle postion. When they're worn, they make that sound. I think they were replaced shortly after this video.
The talking is way more easier than it sounds, the "language" being used is very standardized and most of the time you know exactly what AT-service will tell you.
I think you mean the stabilizer in motion sound. It tells you that the horizontal tail is moving (you are trimming). It comes in handy to detect a runaway trim. Or to monitor autopilot operation.
Yeah but don't worry. Everytime I grow my hair like that and grow a mustache I get stopped by Airport Security when travelling as a pax. Throw in a black on grey shirt and tie and viola ! Interrogation room.
What is that buzzing noise that happens every so often? At first I thought that it was the altitude warning but there is no change of altitude in the MCP and it happens too often. Anyone know what it is?
For what its worth...there is no manual trim wheel for the elevator on an MD80. Other comments are correct, the wheel you see moving is the pressurization wheel. It is directly connected to the outflow valve, therefore, it moves as the outflow valve opens and closes. Look closely, there is a yellow lever in front of the wheel...it is in the up, or on position. Push this lever down and the outflow valve can be manually operated with the wheel you have been discussing.
I guess that manual control is a backup, but works with the automatic which controls it's system by the manual disk. It's not ON/OFF, as you fly in a high level (Over than 25,000ft) where there is no Oxygen and low pressure, pilots selects the altitude that the cabin will stay (no more than 10,000ft, but no 0ft, to mantain the pressure diference limit ) to mantain life conditions aboard.
The disk spins to pressurize/unpressurize the cabin ;) Not sure about this, but makes some sense.
It's automatic. The wheel is when both channels 1 and 2 fail. In that case you can push and spin the wheel after selecting the system in manual with the yellow lever at the bottom of the wheel.
The MD80's autothrottle has the same features as a modern 738 or 744. The difference is that Pratt's use EPR as the primary power setting source. So at takeoff the A/T will hold a certain EPR setting. Same for JT9's or PW4056 etc. All use EPR.
I guess you're right. But I try to look at it this way. You'll get bored at one point or another in most any job, but in this one, when you get bored you have absolutely the most amazing view you will find on earth. It's just beautiful to see nature play itself in front of you.
Hm, I guess the takeoffs and the landings are rather fun, but generelly working as a pilot must be quite boring? Am I right? I don't want to be offensive or so, just wondering. Have had some thoughts of becoming a pilot but the "cruising" part seems to be so interminable? Any thoughts?
Gathering that you are posting for attention, all I can say is, search for open cockpit during takeoff and you'll find more than MD-80's. Have a nice life.
I choose to beleive you. Nice plane. Word of notice, most of us who truely love aviation can not find a stupid or ugly plane. We like them all for what they are. Was this particular takeoff noisy? Yes it was, the camera was on a hard surface, the runway condition is not the best, and it's an MD80 which has more moving parts than an NG. On the other hand, the MD80 cockpit is hands down quiter that any NG or any other 737 in any other phase of flight. Still a nice plane though.

Very Very nice Video of the Insel Air Cockpit the Stabilizer sound seem that the stabilizer is moving a little bit more than the rate of the trimming in overall I rate this video +10
Very nice video. The MD-80 is one of my favorites on FS-X. What is that loud alarm right before the FO asks for 'flaps up' at 3:18? I assume that is a master warning to retract flaps due to their increasing airspeed(or..?)-Thanks
That sound is the stabilizer movement sound. It sounds to tell you that the stabilizer is moving more than a normal trimming rate. With the AP on you can also get a "Stabilizer in motion" aural warning. This is to to prevent a unnoticed runaway stabilizer.

The MD80's autothrottle has the same features as a modern 738 or 744. The difference is that Pratt's use EPR as the primary power setting source. So at takeoff the A/T will hold a certain EPR setting. Same for JT9's or PW4056 etc. All use EPR.
