I saw them live around this time period and frankly I'm surprised you got as much sound fidelity that you did! It was the loudest concert I've been to. Thank you for sharing this video!
im glad there arent though, because i think it would really ruin a moment like this for me if... say, anyone was like " hey look... hes playing like the guy from deer hunter or elephant ass or any of those generic animal, or no thought like name bands with beards that are all out nowadays"
i think theres one called glove even?... i think?... yeah
Does anyone know if there are any live clips from Jonathan Donahue's time in the band? That's the era I would be most curious to see footage of, not having witnessed them until Ronald and Steven joined.
god i loved it when the lips were "just a psychedelic punk band"
yeah, there sound has changed a lot over the years, not necesaarily better or worse, but different, and they are one of the few bands who i can say that every album is brilliant
you guys probably won't believe this but i'm 15 and Ronald Jones and Jonny Greenwood are my favourite guitarists and i play like every instrument under the sun but my guitar work is very influenced by those guys
@thepsychedelicgnome That is excellent! I'm a 50 yr old woman, have loved the FL since these "old" days (pre-Soft Bulletin) and saw them in a small bar when Ron Jones was till playing with them....wish you could've been there! You got some good influences there!
in my opinion their music becme less interesting when Ronald left, i always preferred transmissions and clouds better than yoshimi and the soft bulliten
ya i agree with you that its a great album but i guess iv always had a far greater connection with clouds and transmissions. i guess its because i heard those two albums before i heard yoshimi, but to honest theyre one of the most consistantly interesting bands career wise overall, im just being picky!
One of the most heartbreaking moments in my life was listenting to Soft Bulletin. Sorry but the post Clouds stuff doesnt come near the brilliance of Telepathic Surgery - Clouds. I tried to remain a fan, I really did, but I havent liked their past few albums. Ill always remember them for their 89 - 95 music. When the guitar took a back seat, their music became alot less interesting.
Hey folks, if artists didn't evolve, we would still be banging 2 rocks together and looking at cave paintings. I was ALMOST one of those guys who got to say "I was there...", as I lived in OKC 91-93, but missed out on seeing them. This is great stuff, but so is what they do now.
I can't say for sure, but I have a couple of ideas:
1) ring modulator w/expression pedals for the rate and carrier frequency feeding into a delay. Then couple that with the slide and whammy bar that he uses most of the time.
2) some sort of arpegiator/whacked out chorus pedal (an Ibanez DML10 would do the trick), fed into a bit crusher/low rate sampler.
neither of those would surprise me considering some of the pedals I have seen him play in other videos. I think there is a quote in Fearless Freaks where Wayne says something like "if he gets any more pedals, it will kill him".
Either way though, his intro is 100% righteous and I really miss his contributions to the Lips.
How did this band create At War With The Mystics? I mourn those days. Back when they rocked the fuck out and Wayne didn't spend 20 minutes speaking in between songs. :(
There are basically two types of Flaming Lips fans: those who know and appreciate and love their whole evolving catelogue AND then those who only know them through the success of Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi.
This line-up in the video is my personal favorite even though their live shows during the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi tours were fucking amazing as well.
This is one of my favorite Lips' tunes.. hard to believe they're in their 3rd decade.. I have to say I still stubbornly think of this as "mid-period" Lips.. great stuff!
I love you! Thank you so much for posting this, its an awesome clip, I love the Lips and this is one of my favourites of their early stuff! Please keep 'em coming! We need more early Lips footage on here

I like this song, but either the person doing the sound mix ate some hash brownies or the video is distorted...sounds like shit.
pinworms70 2 years ago
The distortion is due to the fidelity limitations of the camcorder's microphone.
sydbarrett5 2 years ago
sydbarrett5 is correct, My handycam's built-in mic was stereo, but it was certainly over attenuated at this loud show.
