  • Cool it's uploaded I was there. fun show

  • Very, very cool. He's wearing his I <3 Michelle button, I think. Wayne is the coolest rock star in history.

  • POST THE REST

  • why needs a fucking keyboard player when you got ron.

  • They've certainly come a long way :)

  • Ronald's guitar sounds were such a trip. Too bad he wasn't really made for life on the stage.

  • really really great. freeballin'.

  • I love this.

    "ELMO LOVES YOU!"

    "Who does?"

    "ELMOOOOOOO!"

  • I was 16 then.

  • Ron Jones is a Guitar cult God.... WHERE ARE YOU RON!!! DAMNIT RON WHERE ARE YOU!!!

  • I Love it! Please post more!!!!

  • ci vorrebbero a ,montezuma....

  • please post more

    !!

  • hey i was there! is there any footage of the mosh pit? or the chrowd jumping around? Good times! thanks for posting this jewel

  • I like this song, but either the person doing the sound mix ate some hash brownies or the video is distorted...sounds like shit.

  • The distortion is due to the fidelity limitations of the camcorder's microphone.

  • sydbarrett5 is correct, My handycam's built-in mic was stereo, but it was certainly over attenuated at this loud show.

  • I saw them live around this time period and frankly I'm surprised you got as much sound fidelity that you did! It was the loudest concert I've been to. Thank you for sharing this video!

  • thats awesome! thanks for posting :)

  • POST IT

    please thanks

  • post the whole concert

  • pooooooooost ittttttttt

  • they were so cool back then. my friend has a show from '96 from nashville.

  • Where is it? Sharing is Caring. Also they're still cool

  • post the rest my man!

  • You were so fortunate to witness this.

  • did these guys and Tripping Daisy ever tour together???? would have been perfect!!!

  • you'd think by now there'd be a whole generation of guitarists who "play-like-ronald-jones". i guess his stuff went over most people's heads.

  • im glad there arent though, because i think it would really ruin a moment like this for me if... say, anyone was like " hey look... hes playing like the guy from deer hunter or elephant ass or any of those generic animal, or no thought like name bands with beards that are all out nowadays"

i think theres one called glove even?... i think?... yeah

    terrible-

    thank goodness for this though.

  • too funny man, agreed

  • thank you friend- im glad im not alone on this-

    love

  • Thanks dfor uploading this clip.

Does anyone know if there are any live clips from Jonathan Donahue's time in the band? That's the era I would be most curious to see footage of, not having witnessed them until Ronald and Steven joined.

  • I think there is some footage in the bonus materials section of the Fearless Freaks DVD.

  • I was 5 when this was filmed

    Hectic...

  • Haha same, that's really weird.

I'm glad they've been going strong for this long. Saw them last year, epic!

  • god i loved it when the lips were "just a psychedelic punk band"

yeah, there sound has changed a lot over the years, not necesaarily better or worse, but different, and they are one of the few bands who i can say that every album is brilliant

  • you guys probably won't believe this but i'm 15 and Ronald Jones and Jonny Greenwood are my favourite guitarists and i play like every instrument under the sun but my guitar work is very influenced by those guys

  • thats a mighty fine start there, young one!

  • @thepsychedelicgnome That is excellent! I'm a 50 yr old woman, have loved the FL since these "old" days (pre-Soft Bulletin) and saw them in a small bar when Ron Jones was till playing with them....wish you could've been there! You got some good influences there!

  • @thepsychedelicgnome shut the fuck up, you're shit

  • Thank you for this, there are so few early videos of them.

  • Steven needs to get back on the drums in their live act and play some March of the Rotten Vegetables live

  • feedback intro is amazing, then 1:54 when it kicks in

    YAHhefhafwafweajfouiwfoije

  • At :51 even Wayne looks speechless.

  • Is that a ring modulator Ronald Jones is using to make that sound?

  • i would say so but with ronald jones nobody knows

  • It was like having Hendrix in your band.

  • wow that intro is insane, does anyone know how ron makes those crazy noises? some weird effects pedal i know but...

  • Ring mod, delay, phaser, pitch shifter, fuzz, feedback. But then again I have no idea really.

  • Get over yourself.

    Haha

  • The Lips were just a psychedelic punk band????

oh but i love them too much!!

  • in my opinion their music becme less interesting when Ronald left, i always preferred transmissions and clouds better than yoshimi and the soft bulliten

  • Comment removed

  • ya i agree with you that its a great album but i guess iv always had a far greater connection with clouds and transmissions. i guess its because i heard those two albums before i heard yoshimi, but to honest theyre one of the most consistantly interesting bands career wise overall, im just being picky!

  • Comment removed

  • Zaireeka isn't "interesting" enough for you? come on.

  • One of the most heartbreaking moments in my life was listenting to Soft Bulletin. Sorry but the post Clouds stuff doesnt come near the brilliance of Telepathic Surgery - Clouds. I tried to remain a fan, I really did, but I havent liked their past few albums. Ill always remember them for their 89 - 95 music. When the guitar took a back seat, their music became alot less interesting.

  • My god Ronald Jones. They are still great without him but man, shame that guy had to have his personal troubles. What a guitarist

  • That's how drugs age you...

  • someone with the word hella in their name would say something retarded like that

  • its the dogs bollocks, hey where did those trips go?lol

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Nice! Live 105 back in the day!

  • I love how Wayne looks so amazed at what Ronald is doing at the beginning.

  • i wish i had been concert-going age when the lips were like this!

  • same

  • I was only 1

  • make that 11 months.

  • holy fuck, awesome

  • Hey folks, if artists didn't evolve, we would still be banging 2 rocks together and looking at cave paintings. I was ALMOST one of those guys who got to say "I was there...", as I lived in OKC 91-93, but missed out on seeing them. This is great stuff, but so is what they do now.

  • Those are the Flaming Lips i love...miss those days...

  • right here...

  • that. is. amazing.

#1:the flaming lips are one of the best live performances ever

#2:wayne coyne's hair is not gray

  • does anyone know what effects Ronald Jones is using?

  • I can't say for sure, but I have a couple of ideas:

    1) ring modulator w/expression pedals for the rate and carrier frequency feeding into a delay. Then couple that with the slide and whammy bar that he uses most of the time.

    2) some sort of arpegiator/whacked out chorus pedal (an Ibanez DML10 would do the trick), fed into a bit crusher/low rate sampler.

  • neither of those would surprise me considering some of the pedals I have seen him play in other videos. I think there is a quote in Fearless Freaks where Wayne says something like "if he gets any more pedals, it will kill him".

Either way though, his intro is 100% righteous and I really miss his contributions to the Lips.

  • This is the best fucking video ever! The intro had me laughing at the look on Wayne's face when he was trying to figure out where to come in.

  • I am tearing up. I miss this band so much.

  • are you implying that theyre a different band nowadays?, cause anyone with taste would agree

  • I miss Ron :(

  • Thank you So so much for posting up this vid. Please show your love at:

    RonaldJonesClub

  • How did this band create At War With The Mystics? I mourn those days. Back when they rocked the fuck out and Wayne didn't spend 20 minutes speaking in between songs. :(

  • Exactly!

  • Was Kliph still drumming with them back then?

  • Nah, Kliph only started drumming after Yoshimi when they toured with Beck. Steven was the drummer at the tme here. Awesome stuff!

  • Thankyou! What a treat!

  • pro0

  • "I'm not sure anyone wants to see early live footage of when the Flaming Lips were just a psychedelic punk band. "

-Are ya fucking kidding me? There's nothing I'd like to see/hear more!

  • There are basically two types of Flaming Lips fans: those who know and appreciate and love their whole evolving catelogue AND then those who only know them through the success of Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi.

This line-up in the video is my personal favorite even though their live shows during the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi tours were fucking amazing as well.

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • This is one of my favorite Lips' tunes.. hard to believe they're in their 3rd decade.. I have to say I still stubbornly think of this as "mid-period" Lips.. great stuff!

  • for godsake man post more of this

  • brillant!

  • HAHA SWEET

  • seriously this is awesome

  • FEEEEEEEDBAAAACK

  • the type of sound ronald played is what I like to consider true love.

  • Post Some more Lips! This is great!

  • I love you! Thank you so much for posting this, its an awesome clip, I love the Lips and this is one of my favourites of their early stuff! Please keep 'em coming! We need more early Lips footage on here

  • this is really great thanks for posting it

  • Please, Please, Please post more! I've been a Lips fan since the early days, and would love to see more from this era. How can I get a copy?

  • Holy cow, how great is this?!
