  • That's Jeff Beck playing guitar on that track.

  • This song is so hauntingly beautiful. It made you really appreciate the life of a Stripper or Private Dancer. Thanks Tina.

  • Dire Straits without Mark Knopfler. You wouldn't think it was possible, but they really made it work. Of course Tina's great vocals and Jeff Becks solo complete the track. Mark never played or sang on the official / released version.

  • The sax solo is sick!!!

    Portugal loves you, Tina!

  • i'll admit tina, i am a fan

  • Nothing is perfect it's not suppose to be and can't be if it were we would never work harder at it's accomplishments. She came a long way to show her work's efforts, I see them as musical and timeless.

  • It should be Private dancer" ANY OLD SHIT WILL DO".

  • who play the sax in this song?

  • It's a great song and I really like it, like many other songs of Tina.

There's just one question that pops into my head as in the lyrics, the character dancing says "We don't think of them as Human".. if that's so I wonder what she thinks of herself. Unless you're forced, threaten and work as a slave, I really wonder what she thinks of herself.. a princess? :)

  • Tina went down in history with this album obviously.

  • @tjrtherocksponge I completely agree with you! The album version with sax solos is probably Tina's best R&B song post Ike Turner period!...It would have been possible to include them on the single mix, but who did it it wasn't just the right person and disregarded the true spirit of the song!...

  • @tjrtherocksponge I completely agree with you! • @tjrtherocksponge Mark is playing the rhythm guitars...

  • @garbeaj No, he is not. It's Hal Lindes playing the rhythm guitars. Lindes was playing in Dire Straits. Actually many Dire Straits member played in this song.

  • @2442Random I'm just going by my ears...interesting to know that it is Lindes. Normally he plays with a pick, but you can hear the distinctive "Knopfler-esque" drag of the fingernails on the strings in the very beginning of the full length version of the song. Thanks for the correction and the info! I knew Illsley played bass and Terry WIlliams on drums, but I did not know about Lindes! He really has a knack for complimenting and even imitating Mark's style on this track...

  • @garbeaj I read somewhere that there's demo tape of original version of this song played by Dire Straits but without Mark's vocals. In some interview Turner said that Mark's version is so beautiful. Nobody knows where's that tape now... Did you know that Mark said the quitar solo in this song is the second ugliest guitar solo ever? And it compeletely ruins this song... (It's played by Jeff Beck)

  • @2442Random That's hilarious because I think the solo Jeff plays here is one his best and one of the best and most elegant and emotional guitar solos ever recorded! I'm a guitar player and I have learned it note-for-note...I wonder what Mark considers the "first ugliest" solo? LOL!

  • @garbeaj Here you can read Mark's impressions: 3*w.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/blogs/blog-on-the-tracks/3294741/The-worst-guitar-solo-in-the-world

  • @2442Random I read the blog that you linked...the guy jusr says that Mark said that one line about it being the 2nd worst solo ever, but the rest of the blog is just the guy giving his supposition on what Mark meant. Of course, this was a line that was left out of an interview with Mark. Do you have the original interview? At any rate, I still think this is one of the best guitar solos ever and I think it makes a great song even better! Bravo Jeff!

  • @garbeaj 3xW.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/blogs/blog-on-the-tracks/2839517/The-Mark-Knopfler-Interview

Here's the original interview, but there's nothing of Mark's thoughts on Private Dancer... So, I can't be sure of my last posts facts. Them might be Mark's thoughts or blogwriters opinions...

  • @2442Random Well.. I made an error... Mark said that "there is a version I worked up, it's slower, moodier, more Laidbackreflective. A quiet portrait, but I don't think people need to hear that now" - that in itself says a lot about the man)...

  • This Woman is timeless

  • Tina hit #7 in Billboard, 3-23-85. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week!

  • loe this song"* and tina

    who don't like fuck

  • perfect, the saxophone player makes love with it and tina is orgasmic.

  • I feel the same!

  • ICONIC LIFE lov it all the Time

  • I wish Mark Knopfler would keep on writing songs like this one....

  • @ripper1975

If you really like this particular one, listen to the Dire Straights song "Love Over Gold".

The chorus of this song is the bridge of the that song. Had Mark not written both, he'd have sued himself! :)

  • Eventually, lyrics goes in same style.

In "Love over gold" it goes: "

It takes love over gold and mind over matter to do what you do that you must"

In Private dancer it goes: "I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money

I'll do what you want me to do

I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money

And any old music will do.

For me Love over Gold sounds like "Private Dancer pt.2." LoG is much darker and sadder...

  • @kdigiorgio no point in wasting a good tune is there?

  • Oh absolutely, the FULL version is the best, with the sexy saxophone....

  • I LIKE THIS VERISON BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I FEEL ALOT OF EMOTIONS LISTENING AND TRYING TO SING WHAT A FAB SON

  • fantastic song, fantastic voice

  • Great song !!!!! So sexy !!!

  • this song empowers Me. It's an example of her resurgence to fame & fourune, after leaving ike turner. The song starts off slow, soft, & sexy. Then Ends with such power & conviction. That's how her success was, once she left ike in 1976. He career was almost faded but, she came back bigger & better than ever before!! Thanks Tina 4 This wonderful song!! (cheering)

  • poor tina...

  • this is my favorite version it the original version on private dancer LP i love this version so much passion u can hear the hunger in her voice. 'do w hat u want me to do"

  • wanna SMOKESOMECRACK?!

  • Private Dancer is one of the best albums every made. I mean the WHOLE album. Every song is amazing and this song alone still sounds good after all these years

  • thanks for the correction, i stand reproved great song anyway

  • correct me if im wrong, but thats david gilmour from pinkfloyd who does the guitar solo

  • @ajjules1 All Music Guide says it's Jeff Beck that plays lead guitar on this song.

  • Brilliant storytelling. The first 50 seconds establishes the seamy banality of the character's life and Tina hasn't even sung a word yet. When Tina finally does come in... Boom. Her voice seals the deal. By the end of the song, I can almost smell the smoke in the dive at which the dancer works.

  • i love this music

  • best music

  • One of my favorite tunes of Tina Turner, especially the album version.

  • Come to think of it - Tina would probably fit perfectly for most Dire Straits songs, especially the "On Every Street" album.

  • This actually sounds a lot like "Love Over Gold".

  • WAS THE 80'S GOLDEN ERA OF MUSIC AND LYRICS ? AND THAT TIME WILL NEVER COME AGAIN ?

  • Your audio sounds nice. This song is owning its title.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this. I have the CD but all my CDs are in storage at the moment and I really wanted to hear this song tonight.

  • @gurugvideos Happy New Year!

  • @gurugvideos Yeah me too. For some reason this came in my head (the sax part, especially) and I lucked up to find the song on youtube. Happy New Year to you.

  • This is Dire Straits - with Knopfler replaced with Tina and Jeff Beck. I'd still rather hear Mark do this.

  • @CentraCross I didn't know Mark Knopfler had ever been in on the picture anytime....

  • how too hell is lady gaga?? this is real music!

  • Yes this is my favourite Tina song. Forgot Mark Knopfler wrote it. Best version of Private Dancer by far. Thank you 11th Dawn.

  • So grown and sexy....

  • Soft, smooth soul, flowing with Tina's rich husky voice............

  • Great Album Private Dancer is, although I would have omitted the drum machines because of its harsh sound, but I must state that its harshness was significantly minimized by being properly mixed and containing its volume.

  • All the elements of this song fit perfectly together to highlight the brutal theme - not least, Tina's vocal interpretation as well as the "LA Confidential"-type musical interlude that's so apropos. Also, the stinging line: "I want a husband and some children; yeah, I guess I want a family". A musical gem. Tina at her versatile best. - Deutsche marks or dollars?

  • This lady goes way back - disappeared for a while - reappeared and never looked back. Besides her incredible talent this lady's journey in life was filled with so many personal enemies - but she made it.

What an incrdible lady of strength and soul who touched my life with her music.

    Thanks for posting this 11thDawn.

  • Gotta love Mark Knopfler for writing the song! : )

  • TTTTTTTTTTTIIIINNAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaa

  • i was so surprised when i learned that mark knopfler wrote this and the whole dire straits band did the recording, but he couldn't join because he was busy somewhere else :o

  • Even the music video has the short version of this song

  • one of the worlds best songs and singers!!!

  • Such a Strong Voice She Sings It From Her Heart !!

  • i saw her in concert once and it was like...WOW! no even better than that-her voice is an amazing gift, its so strong, and she builds the songs very wells, and live its like nothing you ever heard

  • i adore this song...thinking back though im a bit worried about the fact that i used to dance in the sitting room to this as a child while listening to the lp lol

  • I can see why this was a such turning point for her & a successful launch of her solo career... Ike who?

  • Well done 11thDawn!

  • Great song but Mark Knopfler is right, the guitar solo blows. Great sound, but very meh. Not one of Jeff Beck's finest moments!

  • THANK YOU for posting this LONGER version! I agree, I also feel cheated when I hear the shortened version. This is too beautiful a song to shorten! It's just awesome!

  • This is the only song written by Mark Knopfler for Dire Straits, that he doesn't play on, but the rest of DS do play on.

  • Close, but no cigar. The drummer at the time Bill Withers didn't play on it either.

Your right Mark Knopfler doesn't play on it though, it's Jeff Beck for some strange reason.

It was recorded for Love Over Gold, so there is a Dire Straits version out there, it would be nice to hear it.

  • Knopfler has said a number of times over the years that Jeff Beck's guitar solo on this was the second worst ever. I wonder what the worst was?

  • I love the 80s and I'm 21 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Coppertunes According to what I've read, when Dire Straits recorded it, Mark Knopfler never got around to recording the vocals, realizing the song needed a female voice.

  • @Coppertunes Dire Straits never completed recording the song for Love Over Gold. Mark realized the song needed "a woman's touch" and never recorded the vocals. They had to record a new version for Tina to use because of legal issues with their record company. At that point, PICK Withers was no longer in the band and his replacement, Terry Williams, handled the drum chores for this song.
