Technology had killed s & v tennis. To much spin available these days due to strings and racquets make it easier to control returns, dipping topspin. Rafters serve wasn't that good, just awesome placement and a shut load of kick. These days he'd get monstered with the spin available on return. Pat cash did a exhibition match @ oz open and pumped down a 210km serve. He was no where near that while he was on the tour 20 years ago?? You get stronger as you age??

I have NEVER seen such a great serve/volleyer.. in tennis.. Even now noone serve/volleys, all they do is stay at the base line and hope someone hits it out and rarely run into the net.. I miss this aggression... alot.. Today's tennis has become too pussy

@benvezina2 I agree with serve and volley don't need a power just use only technic .I don't want to on court for long time like Nadal or Federer I just keep finished quickly like Pat Rafter.

interesting how rafter won 2 us opens as a serve volleyer... back then the courts were just as fast as they are now... so it stands to reason that serve and volleyers can still be effective today. rafter faced some of the best returners ever... sampras, agassi. he didnt even have a big serve... he had a great kick serve though and positioned it well....

The reason why serve and volleying doesn't seem effective today, is because the guys today can volley for shit -- they don't move or anticipate at the net nearly as good a Rafter or Edberg did. Today, I hardly see people move across the net to cover a shot like they did.

Isn't weird that both Rafter and Agassi didn't like Sampras..Rafter was the last true serve & volleyer I can remember and he won the fairest player as voted by peers multiple times, something which I dont think Sampras would go anywhere near.. No wonder the world wanted Federer to break Sampras' record.
