  • @snoopy235689 Can you tell me what Soto & Uchi mean? I did Karate for 12 years & have been involved in the Martial Arts for over 21. I would like to know what you think the translation is?

  • Uchi means inner and soto means outer. In karate, soto uke comes from outside using the arm to parry. It's counterpart is what's being shown, as I know it is ude uke, coming from inside to parry with the forarm, but ude = arm not inner. Calling it uchi uke makes perfect sense though. In my experience this parry is total garbage, worthless, but soto uke is good.

  • @maofas You are correct of course! However some styles translate Chudan uchi & Chudan Soto Uke in a different way. They see Uchi as blocking a strike to the inner & Soto as blocking a strike to the outer area of the body. I have done a number of styles & it is common for the translations & terminology to vary.
