There is quite a lot of difference between maiko and geiko. Firstly hairstyle, if you put pictures of the hairstyles next to each other you will the difference. Basically, geiko hairstyle doesn't have the top bun and they wear subtle kanzashi. No hana kanzashi.

Does anyone know what exactly the okasan give to her? I guess it's two (or four?) fans, these bags where maiko transport their stuff to appointments and....what else?
sorry but when I saw the maiko with her make up on crying cause the other girl was leaving, I couldn't help but chuckle a bit cause of the scene in memoirs where okisan tells pumpkin "stop crying or your face will run" LOL. I actually loved that line..
Hi GoldenGirl. The one girl left the "Okiya" (Maiko housing) because she felt that the work was just too hard and she wanted to give up. It was just at that time that "Ayano" (the new girl from Okinawa) started her 5-year long training to become a Maiko.
She has been a shikomi (a Maiko in training). There are many girls who leave before becoming a Maiko, because the life of a Maiko/shikomi is a very hard one. Much work, less sleep and training, training, training in the arts, and lots of "older sisters" who are very strict. This is a very tough world.
@goldengirl2384 Actually, that girl gave up to be Maiko because there are a lot of strict rules and it's too hard to endure the lessons to be Maiko (Geiko).
@goldengirl2384 yes she quit. She says that although a part of her still wants to become maiko, she reached a point where she is tired and gives up about it
