  • Utterly magnificent! I hesitate to add that he should watch his dipthongs. Of course Frank Sinatra also had a famous dipthong problem. Chernov's is actually less of a problem.

It's clear from this selection that he is more of a bass-baritone than say Hvorovtosky. I would like to hear him do Dutchman or Wotan.

  • He has the perfect style..and the physique du rôle..too..for to be the holländer..and..what Senta could resist his fascination???

  • He's being mic'd. That's why it's picking up lower overtones and he sounds deeper. I'm assuming this is also a recording from late in his career, so his voice is bound to have less ability for the top notes. He was a full lyric baritone on the opera stage in his hayday.

  • I heard him many times at SF Opera before he went to the Met. In his first couple roles - e.g. Ezio - he had trouble with the top. When he got the top under control he went to the Met as their first Verdi baritone but he didn't last long. I think the tessitura caught up with him.

Lots of great baritones haven't had good tops: Taddei, Wixell, Terfel. I don't see Chernov as Figaro (Mozart) or Leporello. But Dutchman, Wolfram or Amfortas seems about right.

  • He culd be an amazing ,hurting Amfortas...the most sweeter wolfram..and the perfect...PERFECT! Dutchman!
