atbestvague, on behalf of America, thank you for exposing this fruity graperrorist. he comes across as anyone's grandpa, when all along he only wants these grapes to be destroyed in a senseless gastric act.
It's about time you all know the truth about this guy.
He had the opportunity to save a bushel of grapes from undeserved torture, simply by making a few keystrokes.

Today, I turn up the heat.
I will be using scotch tape to attatch 968 grapes to the treading of the tires of my car, and will; do a lap around a random cauldersac, EVERYDAY, until my simple demands are met.
I don't even remember exactly what my original demands were... just fulfill any demands you can!
i have a question. where are the males at in your videos? or are those males and females bearing fruit?? i have a male and female muscadine vine which are only a about 3-4 feet long at the most and i was told the male doesnt bear fruit it only pollinates the female but if i prune him will he still be able to grow back in time to pollinate the female???? anyone please feel free to help me!
I saw this video, and ended up purchasing your book about a year ago. It was a great help, now the grape is the center of my gardening hobby.
I am currently experimenting with different varieties to grow in Las Vegas, NV. The only varieties that are readily available are 'Thompson seedless' and 'Flame seedless'. I ended up acquiring a 'Golden Muscat' and a 'Red Globe', and hopefully i'll find a 'Black monukka' to try.
Or you could contact your local Extension educator. If you live in grape-growing country (that is, if your climate is suitable for growing grapes), there will be locals who can tell you what grows best in your area. If it's hot, try a Mediterranean variety like Cabernet. If it's cool, try Reisling.

I dont like your video. I find the old man's neck to be disturbingly thin. It makes me uneasy, like he's turning into a tree. I see that you respond to everyone's comments, and I want you to know that if you don't respond to mine, I will hunt down a raisin and step on it. I will then leave a comment notifying you. Further lack of response will result in the stomping of grapes, followed by kiwis, then plums, on down the list of fruits, small to large, skipping those I feel should be skipped.
The neck is not unlike the cartoons character on your page, which indeed makes one wonder. If this is the way you sort information and measure people - gosh I really feel sorry for you.
I planted about 2 dozen assorted grape vines last year, watered, fertilized, but only 2 survived. This year I bought about half a doz and planted them in pots. They were doing real good until my dog decided to chew them down to 2 inches. My future grape harvest isn't looking too good. :(
Best Grape out there. We use to go to dirt roads where trees shaded over the roads. The Muscadines would fall when we tossed sticks into the trees. There is no other grape this good. The skins were never eaten. Just too bitter. We would suck the insides out and squish the skin to release more juice. Finding a ripe bunch of Muscadines is like finding Persimmons while out in the woods. You would hit the tree trunk and it would rain fruit! You just looked for the seeds the raccoons left behind.
We have a small vineyard too. Some things that he didn't mention about grapes is how fragile they are.
They can only be pruned in the very early weeks between winter and spring.
They also attract hundreds of bees when you go to pick them. So whoever picks them will most likely get stung (I've been stung).
Grapes take years to grow, a good plant may take 3-5 years to mature and produce lots fruit. The grapes only keep for 3-4 weeks on the vine before spoiling.
Thanks for sharing your experience on grape growing, CMLovejoy. Lon does prune during those times. If you get the sense he wasn't thorough with his info, that would be because I was focusing on his story of how he got interested in growing grapes and fruit trees, for that matter. I don't want anyone to think this is a 'how to'. Lon's expertise goes way beyond this short video!
This was a great video, you did a great job on it as you always do ;-)
My point is that grape growing is very difficult and not at all easy (unlike corn). I think this man the "Grape Grower" is a bit of an artist at his craft.

I did a story on Lon cause I thot he was an interesting person with a passion for growing and breeding grapes, fruit trees, and other wonderful plants. The fact that he is willing to share his knowledge gained over 35 years I think is great. Those who want to know more can go to his website, where he gives away lots of info without having to buy anything.

Lon said grapes can grow pretty much anywhere. You just have to find the variety that works in your area. BTW, he is in OR, and he is growing lots of different kinds of grapes.
