What type of program are you taking your character parts into? Generally to export the parts, you'd create a new document in flash and paste your parts, one at a time into it. You'd then do file>export>Image>(either jpeg, gif, etc)
As soon as you can, tell me what prgram and I'll get you some specifics.
I believe you mean live trace. Live trace has limitations especially in vectorizing complicated images. Also to get parts seperated is a step I think is more difficult in Illustator than in Flash. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned that the method I show here is one to use when either you don't have method that works for you or as a last resort. Don't take it as a simple or easy method, it isn't.
I do expect you to know some aspects of animation when you watch this, things like key frames, tweens, etc. The tracing step was done one layer up from the imported pic. You draw and bend lines to match the image until you have a line drawing above the sketch. Then eyeball out the pic and color it in flash as you wish.
What steps are you missing from the video? I don't mind walking you through the process.
....seriously man...trace him with the pen tool. Your line tool method isn't creating a nice round shape...it's still bumpy even after you play with it.
It depneds how you want to buy it, its costs a lot if you buy the whole suite with fireworks, director, etc. Adobe sells just Flash for $699, discount websites sell it for less but I have never have baught it through them before, so I can't say if that's a good way. If your a student or know someone who is a student, they can buy the softewre through their school at a discount, as low as $99. That's how I got mine.
In a way, I traced this image, but more often I hand sketch one of my own characters and then take it into Flash and trace it, its not quite like drawing it on the PC though
Ok, do you see how I traced it as a single image first then carefully selected the parts I wanted to turn into a new symbol bit by bit?
The selection part is one of the hardtest steps and you may still need to tweek the symbol to add the parts you need to fill in missing areas to make it animate smoothly. Try it doing it just like this and write again if it doesn't work, thanks!
Why dont you use the "Fourth Way of Doing it"? Just Import the bitmap image to the Stage, and then choose Modify/bitmap/bitmap trace thats all, once you click OK with the default settings, thats would do it, the File is now Vector based, faster than anything you said before, once its vector, you can edit each component, like Ears, Nose, Arms, Legs, etc, assigning names to each one, and converting to symbols individually!!! what do you think? thanks and cheers!
hey, that way's bettur! roarn77 just wants us to make fools of ourselves by wasting time, while he makes flash animations quickly! Well, that made no sense, but thanks, that works better.
so, we are re-drawing the drawing... and as its better to use absolute color pieces, a picture wont do a good job, its so complicated, i think its far easier to draw "Mickey" all the way from scratch... anyways from the original image theres nothing left, just the colors! am i right, or am i just superior? joking!
Think of a hybrid between photshop and Flash. There are soem limits to what can be done visually in Flash alone, so Fireworks can do photo oriented editing of images, create textures and all in vector format so it can go right into Flash
dude there is a way easier way just get a bitmap (.BMP) file and inport it then go ito edit then go into bitmap THEN press trace image then it will ask you for the tracing attributes (Color threshold corners ect)
love youtube for this kind of videos :)))) but still, I think I'm swtiching to GAGLA dot com, its got videos and cool profile editing features, you guys should check it out....

wow your so lucky you know how to do all of this already! this is so confusing :(. im DYING to find an animation program and make my charaters animated but i dont know where to get the program or what program to buy. any advice?
My first animation program was Flash so I do have a soft spot for it. It all depends on what kind of anumation your doing. Something like South Park could be done in Flash or the software they use on the show, Toon Boom. I can help you get both. Message me if you need 'em or just more advice.
u can use adobe illustrator cs3 live trace for jpg file to cut in to flash just save it in window meta file and open it in flash sow u can animated it
you should try downloading flash 8 pro using torrent.. don't be so much noob..
and I bet you'll not know wtf to do on it, and you'll delete it out of your PC and do something else.. making flashes is pretty much a hobby of mine.. but making a long movie is just so god damn hard.. you'd actually have to waste like 5 months to make a well done 10 minute animation..
There's more to the method, but I had to cut it for Youtube. You can but you'd have to work with the shape much as it already is, which means limiting the amount of movement. Reply if you have any questions
i love it

you can save yourself a whole lot of time by auto tracing in illustrator and exporting the parts separately into Flash

Learn the pen tool, it's the most useful thing.
Whistt 3 years ago
Agreed the Pen tool is way better when I use flash tracing.
SIV3L 3 years ago
I remember my first flash class back in 2003 and couldn't use the pen tool no matter how hard my teacher tried to show me how. I just never use it.

looks fucking hard dude
itiwere 3 years ago
It is the long way around. This method is only for when all others fail. After one or two tries, you'll find ways to do it faster
Roarn77 2 years ago
It could easily have been exported as a GIF, I only rarely need those so i didn't consider it
Roarn77 3 years ago
That animation of mickey could be more like a gif image.

The tracing part and when you turn it to an animation. I watched this video like 15 times trying to figure it out.
