Your ABZ-6 sounds fantastic! As someone who has a decent collection of high-end basses (custom/modified Spectors, Mike Lull Modern Jazz) I've been wanting to get into the Dingwall/fanned-fret world but the "Combustion" was a touch too "low-end" for me & the ABI/IIs a little too high. The ABZ is the PERFECT pricepoint for me, a good deal higher than the Combustions for a fairly minimal cost increase and high-quality but "basic" features... I'm seriously considering an ABZ-5 for my next purchase!
Thanks...This is one of his least expensive 6's, with basic pickups and stuff...still sounds and plays VERY good...string spacing is perfect at 18mm I believe...and although we were working on a partial endorsement deal at the time, I didn't go through with it, mostly out of financial issues with me. Fantastic bass, and Sheldon is a Canadian genius. You should save your pennies and get one - keep the money in Canada!
@MrBassflute Good advise keeping your money in CANADA..I'm American..Oh and your welcome for the Camaro build jobs...LOL Thats funny right there..But seriously thanks for these great vids..I'm not a musician I'm a insturment collector.LOL.Would you agree that the G&L tribute L2000 is the best beginner bass?
hey, thats some good bassplaying you've got there. i've been thinking of getting a dingwall, i want to save up for a z3 but at the same time i sortof want the bass you have in this video, how much did it end up costing you? also how is the string spacing for slapping (im an open handed slapper like tm stevens or flea)
Very nice playing!!! Nice sound and killer low B! That's the first Dingwall that I've seen with a maple fretboard and it looks cool!!! I have yet to try out a Dingwall, but the fanned frets seem to inhibit access to all of the frets. What's you assesment?
Hard to say...could be the amp/room/recording/player, but it IS hard to beat ash and maple. And yes it has dots, which help, but I think I'd prefer big blocks a la the Geddy Lee Superjazz...the dots are SO far away from where the note is. And chords up high are difficult at best, and some are just impossible, although nobody likes to mention that. It's a trade-off for all the other benefits this type of bass has.
Your Dingwall with the ash and maple combo sounds better than my ABI with soft maple body and wenge fingerboard. Plus (I think) you have dots on the fingerboard, which would have been a welcome addition on my bass given the weirdness of playing chords on non-adjacent strings high up the neck.
There are chords you can do on a Fender Mustang that I can't do on my MTD's because of the huge stretches, so that alone should be a dealbreaker. And the Dingwall has such a unique sound down low, how can you criticise that? If you really need high chords, like I do for teaching ( I play lots of guitar parts with my students so we can work on grooves and songs), then use a different bass. If I need deep, deep bass, there's NOTHING like the Dingwall.
BTW, is the dingwall a durable bass?im just thinking of the neck to twist,because of the uneven fingerboard lenght and tension.How long have you use this dingwall?
@dwprsk They're really well made and made out of properly seasoned wood, so there's no reason they should be durable and last several lifetimes. This particular one was less than a week old.
@dwprsk each string has the same amount of tension. thats why the lower they go the longer they are. even tension throughout the neck and perfect tone from each string
Your playing is solid as hell. Really like those 16th-note triplets. Congrats on a very handsome bass. I used to own a Dingwall ABI 6 with flamed maple top. Getting rid of it was a BIG mistake. I now have a Roscoe SKB6, which is nice, too. Still, I think I preferred the Dingwall, even though it was the stripped down model without the onboard preamp.
It's an old Trace Elliot acoustic PA system...1x10", 2x5" and a piezo tweeter in each cab (stereo), 150 watts a side, plus 300 watt 15"sub...it's the bass that's punchy as ****....ash body/maple neck rules.
Nice looking bass!

Having long arms and broad shoulders helps a lot when playing an extended scale bass guitar like a Dingwall...

@MrBassflute Yeah, the bass is killer. I got the same bass but in trans black finish.
Lately, I´ve been practicing going direct to the pc with headphones, so I kinda forgot how does the bass sound out of an amp hehe.

@MrBassflute Nope, it´s a 5. I believe yours is the 1st ABZ 6 IIRC
