Congrats on the new travel plans. My friends and I started researching/drafting plans to also canoe the Mighty Mississippi and then hit up Central/South America. I am surprised you're going in the middle of the summer because a lot of the blogs we had come across travelled in late September, October, November. Couldn't find a reason why, just a common theme of traveling at that time.

@4evaFranyify not much planning. I usually figure out where I'll be staying and then go from there. There are plenty of sites to research. Check out LonelyPlanet(dot)com, go to the bookstore and buy a book on your destination, or just wing it and ask the locals when you get there. ALways important to get a hold of a map beforehand. Look at it and get an idea where you're located in comparison to everything.
