In their country rock phase, really contains a lot of country views along with a love of the freedom to criticize what you believe is wrong, as much as what's right. Is that so UNAMERICAN? Hardly. Remember that these guys were themselves livin' large so maybe it's self-criticism of their ways, unconsciously.
These guys were so much smarter than the crappy country artists we have these days, too many distorted, right wing views floating around that America is the God's country.
One of America's Great National Pastime's is .......taking more than she needs"--So true. Happy 4th of July. I wonder what our forefathers would make of all that oil gushing needlessly, killing people and animals alike.
Good point, thanks for that. There is a lot of irony in lyrics and probably a goal of such song could be warning, how the pastimes shouldn't be - doesn't matter what country.
I cannot believe you had the presence of mind to post this...truly special. Can you write to the boys in the band and tell them that one of their best and still gorgeous fans loves this as much now as she did then knows all the words? Still cuts her own grass with a push mower...hmmm.
Love this song!

Never liked any of the songs Skip Battin wrote for The Byrds. Personally, this is by far the worst single they ever released.

Stupid video but quite funny. Best of the Byrds' late period.

One of their (subversive?) best! Anyone know if the story about Coca-Cola rejecting this tune as an advert is true? Myth or fact?
