I am not sure of the point of a bear proof canister if he gets it its his it wont stop the smell enough that he wont try to get it .

@STRIKER520 The Idea is that the bear cannot get the food. According the National Park Service, allowing a bear to obtain human food, even once, can result in aggressive, bear behavior. Aggressive bears are a threat to human safety and must be removed or destroyed. Help keep bears wild and safe. Do not feed the bears for any reason!

@BearmanMT actually the scent of the food is a problem as well, if a bear smells the food, even if he cannot get to it, it will associate campers/hikers with food. Always use a odor proof bag inside your bear canister, and make sure you wash the canister if you contaminate it with food or other smells.
