Well "sweeping" does clean the ice. It prevents little pieces of dirt from affecting the movement of the rock which is known as a "pick." However, what the sweeping is mostly meant to do is to melt the ice a little bit in front of the rock.
This decreases the friction between the rock and the ice meaning the rock will curl less (from whichever way it is curling) and go straighter instead of curling more.
It is really fun. Try it with some friends, I can recommend it.
