what a trip down memory lane. we use to live in Salisbury during the summers of the 70's. my dad owned a painting company and he would be contracted to paint the cottages during the summers. i was quite the beach rat.
I understand that Salisbury will be going through a gentrification. the architect responsible for the redevelopment of Boston's Quincy Market is heading up this endeavor. i think it will be a long slow process.
i used to go there in the 50s, 60s, and 70s...mario's dogs, tripoli pizza, fried clams, skee ball, pin ball...salty air...state beach....and the girls of course...
Wow, sure brings back wonderful memories. Fast cars racing to Hampton beach and Butch's upstairs bar in Salisbury. Fun times and less problems. The beach life was for all. Thanks for the jolt of fantastic memories...
This was great. Grew up going to Salisbury in the 50's & 60's and this really brought back the memories. Thank you so much for doing this. Signed, Dan D from Methuen (but now in Georgia)
@garu8193 Cool video, though im only 20 and wasnt born back then i actually think the place looked alot better back then. Now its just over run by losers and crack addicts. By the way i also live in Methuen.
Ah, my "happy place"! My heart is now heavy as I sit here FLOODED in great memories!!! WOW... this depicts so many good times from my childhood. Thought I'd never get to actually see it all again, but guess what? It's exactly as I remember it... if I concentrate really hard, I may be able to smell the salt air, taste the fried clams and hear the music from the Himalaya playing in the distance. Thank you so much for posting this... be still, my heart!
I agree with you, feels like a 100 yrs since Salisbury looked like that. That beach all day then a slice of pizza, some clams and listen to the top 10 hits at the Himalaya. I was bummed out when I heard they tore down the coaster, it was tha best. I was born in Lawrence but grew up in CT but we always made it back to Salisbury, Seabrook & Hampton a couple times a year. THANKS for the memories Garu!!!
@mmmd3 thank you sooooo much,...... yes like you I have such great nostalgic memories of the old salisbury beach, rode that skydiver many times, still hear the change falling out of my pockets and hitting the roof of the ride,.....and yes I just found out about the fb page many thanks
@garu8193 - I would like to include the postcards in the slideshow we are running at the Salisbury Beach Reunion at the Surfside5 on Aug. 19, 2011. I can just pull them off your facebook page if you are ok with that but I don't know your name. I have many of these postcards too but I know it's alot of work to scan them all. Send me your name in FB - marthadastous@hotmail.com is my email if you don't want to post here.
this is fantastic .. thanx alot :) when i went back there after quite a few years i felt that a BIG part of my childhood was gone...... we should all petition to bring the rides back...... the only place left with rides on the beach is old orchard beach in maine.... remember revere, nantasket... they are all gone.... does anyone know when the rides there went away..... now the place is a pithole.....:(
@latenitejeff yes there was talk of putting a new coaster in year,s ago but that was squashed by the big developer,s,..they put in condo,s instead, where the coaster was,.. shaheens park is a parking lot again,
Great story about your wedding at the Frolics! And thank you so much for sharing ~ this is wonderful ~ brings back so many memories from childhood, teen years and early adulthood.
I got married at the Frolics in 1977....I still think of Teddy Tillotson, he was a really cool man, always had a smile and a tube of chapstick and John Mc Donough had the best dry humor ever. What a fun times there and what a wedding. We were all kids then Debbie Bogetti (sorry sp?) and all the rest the Frolics was just a blast back them. All the old bands now old men haha.
@GarlandnDonna thats awesome,....I actually never saw the inside of the frolic,s when band,s played there, but one time I snuck in when Salisbury discount house was there, it was dark and creepy, and the stage and bars were still there, it was being used for storage, I could see the floor had big humps in it near the window,s from the blizzard of 78
THANK YOU. i lived in ipswich and in the 70s during most of my high school years i worked at the sunoco gas station. i would have enough money to take cathy to the beach on a day off. great memories. thanks for the post.
WOW great post, the best years of my childhood were spent here with my parents and grandparents. That place was the best, my family owned a house there and the memories are great.
Yes Garu8193, I have seen that book and it is nice but it stops short of the 60s, 70s the way many baby boomers remember and want to see photos of Salisbury. Your photos are awesome! You should sell them!!! I was awestruck at the fantastic photos you have from that era! So many wonderful memories!
@Jan1277 thank you.... it took me year,s to collect them, I have posted them all on facebook, the resolution quality is much better, also there are some of Hampton beach and the casino and seashell from that era, that are not in the slideshow.......they are for public viewing so anyone can see them !!!
We need a book on Salisbury Beach the way it was 60s, 70s. These photos would be perfect. I've been looking for photos like these for years. Thanks for posting.
@Jan1277 there is a book out , by Pamela stevens, about Salisbury beach,..its avaible on Amazon ... its a fantastic book going into the history of the beach ,..from the late 1800,s to the middle 1900,s with many great picture,s...I highly recommend !!!
thescrappy2002 in the 60's and 70's there weren't many/any people of any other color than white. in 5th grade (1976) our very first black family moved into our community . I remember thinking "she has got the most beautiful skin I've ever seen!" We were a very white community. I am now very close with many hispanic people in this area and there is not one that can tell me their family was in the area or even in the country before the mid 70"s....It was just the demographics of the time.
@thescrappy2002 yes your right, but in that era , the area was mostly Italian, and Irish, but many great performer,s black , latin and so on,.... played at the frolic,s ballroom to mixed crowd,s..namely fats domino, and chubby checker .
i spent all my teenage years at the fun o rama and the arcade..i rode that old wooden roller coaster...late 60's early 70's...it was the only place to hang out and now it's all gone...GONE ..it was affordable too, today the kids have no where and it costs way to much..to bad we did not appreciate it more back then, i still live in the same town only 5 miles away and it is not the same..wow, whoever found and posted these pictures sure made my day. thank u
Now it is gross filthy and nothing but pigs and animals go! makes me sad and sick! Great video nice to see what it was BEFORE try to take pictures NOW and show people the difference.
Being born in 1976, I didn't get to see Salisbury Beach at it's best, however I do remember going on the rides as a kid & how different it used to be. I camped at the reservation there for 2 weeks every year for my whole life. I continue to camp there now with my children. I miss how it used to be even when I went as a kid. I wish they would put the rides back in :(
awww i was born in 1985 so i still got to enjoy quite a few years of Salisbury Beach "The Way It Was" and I miss it. I have so many fond memories. I go back there from time to time for a slice of Tripolis Pizza and that good ol' fashioned sepia colored photo booth :)
AH ! Salisbury beach the way I remember it, before it became the Riviera of Lawrence!
