  • best Opeth album, great sound, great musician...a real trip in music.

  • I seriously don't get the whole Tool debate.

Coming from a big fan of both bands. They couldn't be more different.

If the whole album sounds like something to me, it's a very, very jazzed-up progged-up Deep Purple-fusion thing. Like Ritchie-meets-Al-DiMeola or something. Besides, Ritchie's influence in Mikael's recent guitar work is obvious.

  • DAT BASSLINE.

  • Album of the year for sure !!!

  • Do you guys know what comes to my mind when I listen to this album? Diablo II. This song could have been named: Live in Lut Golhein, maybe.

  • i really dont understand why people dont like this kind of opeth, for me this is their best album.

  • @manu12el because they are metalheads; not Chick Corea fans.... but sincerely I like all the albums from Opeth

  • RIPOFF of Lines In The Sand

  • @MlKEPORNTOY the song name? maybe... the song itself? lol wut

  • Am I imagining things or have I heard another Opeth song with the same (or similar) lyrics but different music?

  • I love 1:57 so much... So prog rock!

  • I appreciate this softer sound of Opeth, but I'm kinda having a hard time getting into it.

  • Tool are awesome and Opeth are awesome, but I don't see why they're both being mentioned. Opeth doesn't sound like Tool, and Tool don't sound like Opeth. Just sit the fuck back and listen.

  • @Chazzyyification dat maak ik zelf wel uit mafkees

  • This is an amazing song!

  • 3:00-3:48 are amazing.

  • why are people mentioning tool? I hear nothing in this song that sounds like tool.

  • @1ManArmyOfDisease

Lead bassline most likely. I used to have friends who would compare a band to Tool if there was an audible bassline.

  • kind of a jazzy-latin-prog song, sounds like a really proggy jazzed up 311 song.

  • @1ManArmyOfDisease wow. never seen a comment on an opeth vid discussing 311, but, being a die hard fan of both bands, no matter how completely different, i gotta agree. this time. haha

  • man i LOVE that dirty bassline in the first part of the song! and the drums, and the guitars... and the vocals, and the keys... man i just generally love this song fucking much!

  • the most intense song on the record, i just go insane with this one

  • I know im probably going to get blasted for this, because GENERALLY SPEAKING, Tool fans are tools, but i dont believe opeth is really inspired by tool at all, opeth is its own band. The intro is somewhat similar to things on lateralus, but they are vastly different bands. I dont really like tool, mostly cause of the fans. Once again generally speaking. not all are bad, it justs seems the vast majority are.

  • @666bloodyxhell666 I actually like Tool but they are overrated as shit. And all they do on facebook now is talk about fucking books.

  • @Eospag thats obviously not members of tool doing monitering the facebook acount.

  • @1ManArmyOfDisease Of course not, but it's still their official page and never say anything about new TooL music.

  • @Eospag I agree. I like Tool as well, but they are indeed one of the most amazingly overrated bands, not as much so as The Beatles, but pretty badly.

  • @Obsidus And that's another thing, people always bring up Tool and Dream Theater on progressive metal or rock songs and it's very annoying to me.

^Irony of me bringing up that other people bring them up LOL >_>

  • The drums were inspired by Captain Beyond's 'Dancing Madly backward's from the '70's

  • @shoegooguru That and from The Hives. You can all see Mikael talk about it if you search for his interview with Nardwuar.

I'm a huge Tool fan as well, but I don't hear much Tool in this. It's just easy to say Tool's influential to any band that takes its music to a higher level, because Tool is all about surpassing artistic thresholds. But any good fan knows that, while Opeth may not do it lyrically, they've been pushing their musical boundaries since day one as well =)

  • All the bands you're mentioning are influenced by Pink Floyd... PERIOD!!!

  • Akerfeldt is probably fucking happy because of the Tool stuff. They are not like Tool. Tool is obviously more inspired and inspiring...

  • @CrapBagMessias2 That's a retarded thing to say.

  • @frostcleave Yeah, show your maturity by insulting me with the usage of a fucking kind of a brain disorder instead of trying to explain to me why Heritage would be considered more inspired than any Tool album.I used to worship Opeth, I've been to a live performance. They were great. But the new album IS NOT OPETH. Not because of the lack of harsh vocals, Damnation was like that and it was great. This album is a great example for everyone who cannot write something honest and original to wait.

  • @CrapBagMessias2 Look up the making of Heritage and watch it, Mike explains his reasons for making the album. Stop being such a complete fucking idiot and listen to the album, if you don't like it then fuck off.

  • @frostcleave Yeah, because we cannot be disappointed by Opeth, it's forbidden. I just made a comment about the contrast between Opeth and Tool. And because Akerfeldt wanted to make something different etc doesn't mean it will be great. I see your democratic beliefes, matey. If you don't like something, do not discuss about it, just shut the fuck up because you are useless. Sounds rational. If Mike decides he want to go on a tour with Miley Cyrus, he'll have his respective reasons.

  • I don't know why, but this reminds me of the Spyro games D:

  • @Battossai3000 I feel the same way. Brings back memories.

  • Tool's awesome, but I came here to listen to Opeth!

  • HO GUYS ! I don't care about Tool ! I'm here for listening Opeth !!!!

  • I do hear the tool inspiration. But hey DT is inspired by pink floyd among others and you don't hear them making the exact same songs. It's a loose "i like this band" thing really, of course they don't listen only to their own music every day and they can get ideas from other bands either consciously or subconsciously. Nothing wrong with that.

  • Mikael said the lyrics were influenced by him being robbed at knife/gun point. See , i can't imagine that scenario because in my mind Mikael would persuade them to give him their money instead with his suave voice...

  • The fights in youtube comments start in the first 5 comments...true fact, check yourself...

  • I think quality may be beneficial and that it should be brought into attention.

  • ing

  • both Tool and Opeth are great so what's the bicker?

  • TOOOL!!! yes..n or .... NO?!!

  • Screw TOOL.. They have some great songs, but not a smany as OPETH. WTF! Get off the TOOL wagaon.

  • Who knew that Opeth where the unknown kids of the members of King Crimson.

  • Opeth is the most unique band i've ever had the pleasure to listen to... Tool is another one of those bands but i think Opeth has better musicianship, not to say Tool or any of the other bands I admire don't have that quality... Opeth is probably my favorite band. The Mars Volta is another unique band that I love. i hear no influence of Tool in Opeth's music.

  • @JohnyCakesPT

The TOOL influence is scattered around Opeth's work, and it's strongest on the album Ghost Reveries which makes sense because it's the album they did after Akerfeldt really made his affection for Lateralus known.

  • @KadrickNinness That's very cool man, I had no idea Mike was a Tool fan at all. They are my top 2 favorite bands so it's neat to see some sort of relationship between the two.

  • @JohnyCakesPT

Listen to the muted breakdown on Ghost of Perdition. Very TOOL influenced.

  • @KadrickNinness Just because it sounds similar, doesn't mean Mikael was listening to Tool while he wrote it.

  • @Megadedly

Just because he wasn't listening to TOOL when he wrote it, doesn't mean he wasn't influenced by TOOL when he did.

I'm not presuming that the very existence of TOOL is inexstricably connected to that example riff. I'm merely observing an example of a subtle trend that crept into the sound after LATERALUS hit the market & he professed his love for it. But it could be some amazing coincidence that wouldn't be undone if you deprived the song of TOOL in hypothetical reality.

  • @KadrickNinness I was simply implying it could have been mere coincidence.

  • @Megadedly

lol! So was I. Which is what I said. I also said: I fucking doubt it :-)

  • @KadrickNinness I understand what you said, but dude I seriously doubt Mikael went in and just blatantly took "inspiration" from Tool.

  • @Megadedly

There's no such thing as "blatantly" took "inspiration". Inspiration is channeled through the subconscious. Someone doesn't have to be thinking about anything that inspires them when they're inspired by it. You're mistaking the words "inspiration" and "plagiarism". My best bet is the Ghost Reveries is somewhat TOOL inspired. Whoever said there's anything wrong with that? TOOL has their inspirations. Nothing wrong there, either.

  • @KadrickNinness The reason I quoted inspiration is because you implied that it sounded very similar, almost sounding to me like you were saying it was ripped off. Opeth isn't really Tool inspired in my opinion, that's all.

  • @Megadedly

Broadly, no. But the inspiration has shown up a little. And tellingly, it showed up mostly after LATERALUS. They converged only a little and have since splayed again.

  • Such a gem of a song. Amazing track on this great album.

  • i realy love the bass and batterie lines in this song !

  • Tool sucks

  • I see the same twat that disliked tracks 1-6 pretty much went through the whole album and hit thumbs down. Probably a deaf person or some dipshit metalhead.

  • Comment removed

  • Cmon man, don't get me wrong, Opeth and Tool are two of my favorite bands, and if you took the folky and acoustic elements out of this song, it would sound a bit like Tool. Man, Tool are obviously a huge influence on Opeth.

This is actually my favorite Opeth album along with Morningrise.

  • @draugsvoll01

    'tis true.

  • This song really reminds me of tool for some reason.

  • @draugsvoll01

Do Tool usually play flutes, keyboards, acoustic guitars and '70s drums? :/

I love them, but I will never understand why people always talk about Tool influence on every music video on Youtube...

  • @Weloz92 The songwriting style is a little similar to Tool's. Especially the bass, the drums and the progression. Reminds me of a little lighter version of some stuff on Ænima.

  • @draugsvoll01 the songwriting remind me OPETH!! ...the progressive opeth stuff without the death touch!..

  • @Weloz92 tool are gay as fuck

  • @psychosuey is that your final answer

  • @psychosuey gtfo troll

  • @Weloz92

Well, they do use samples, a tabla the occasional keyboard and the odd middle-eastern stringed instrument.

The influence TOOL has had on Opeth is quite undisputed. Akerfeldt has a big boner for Lateralus.

It was born out in Ghost Reveries.

  • @KadrickNinness Yes, they definitely have some Tool influences. But when you compare it to their Deep Purple, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant influences it's barely noticeable.

P.S. After looking around a bit, I find it hilarious that Opeth and Tool were officially founded at almost the exact same time.

  • @Nubnut

    Crimson? Notable.

But I don't figure any Gentle Giant influence at all.

  • @KadrickNinness Well not on this song, but on songs like Nepenthe you can hear it creep out.

Not to mention Mikael always lists Gentle Giant as one of his favorite bands of all time.

  • @Nubnut

I'm not doubting his influence. I've just never been sitting, listening to Opeth and suddenly been struck by the thought (:-o) By gum! I hear a GG influence. Where as I'll very occasionally cotton on to some other bands that he likes (like Crimson).

  • @Nubnut yeah the final part of Nepenthe you can hear the keyboard sound like "Proclamation" of Gentle Giant

  • @Weloz92 I think Tool is a good band, but no way close to Opeth... Tool is just drums, bass and vocals, the guitar is useless...

  • @vaxkors95

No way! Without the mind-blowing/hallucinated sound of Adam Jones, Tool wouldn't be the same!

They simply play a different metal genre. I think that both of these bands are really awesome.

  • @Weloz92 yeah, but I think they could be more rich...

  • @vaxkors95

Actually the guitar is very important in Tool, it adds really much to the whole atmosphere and feel.

  • @brkkovi yeah, but Opeth is far better, because the atmosphere of Opeth, the melody, harmony, and rythm is way better too...

  • @vaxkors95

You can't seriously compare that... It's all a matter of taste. I didn't say that Tool is better then Opeth and opposite. I'm just trying to point out that both bands are really great, and besides they're not that simmilar. Music shouldn't be compared, it's all a matter of taste.

  • @brkkovi I think taste can be educated, and I think opeth are way more creative than Tool... Tool is also a good band, but I like Opeth more...

  • @Weloz92 I think tool is great influence for bands. They play flutes, drums etc.

  • @Weloz92 Because Tool fans are very pretentious.

    And I love Tool.

  • @draugsvoll01 I would say it is more akin to Deep Purple, but Tool?

  • one of the best songs on the album

  • @JudasRapidFire This, Slither, and The Devil's Orchard are my 3 favorites on the album.

  • Perfect album, great song. The final is astonishing.
