Whoa, just started reading the book and got to the point where she mentioned Judy. Thought I'd listen to it and didn't know about this song with the same name as the book. Cool stuff. Didn't know there was a movie either, lol.
@ACCatw so in the book, it was only something made up? Like, there was no such song in real life. And then they made this song for the movie, and called it the same thing as in the book?
@MynZnusz There was a cassette with the song "Never Let Me Go" by Judy Bridgewater in the book. She's a fictional singer. They made that song for the film.
@31193JaH it was based off an award winning book. it was a adaptation. I guess reading the book first would have helped. i guess you dont really get it
Unless the story line of the book is very different from the movie, I would have to question what sort of idiots gave out that award. The whole plot is nonsense. Why are so many 'clones' needed and please explain the sense behind raising and teaching these people for 20 years just to have them die? Not once is the idea of running away and not conforming to the system explored which is a shame as that might have made this hopeless film more interesting. Still, nice song though.
@31193JaH exactly you just proved my point that you didn't quite get it(not insulting you). The book was a metaphor of the human race"us" representing that no one can escape death and that every one on this Earth never truly feels that they had enough time to experience or do what they want.and basically we die and grow old just for our kids. plus there was the romance that was also thrown into the story. thats what it was about mostly
So disappointing to hear this after reading the book. I know I sound like a total cunt of a hipster but I don't give a shit. Why did the change it to 'darling'?
Just finished the book, I totally thought this was a real song. As in, like a real song from before the novel.
This is pretty much how I expected it to sound, maybe it was a little slower and sadder in my mind because that's just how the whole book was. Like "Bang Bang" by Nancy Sinatra.
Although I've only seen the movie and didn't read the book, I was completely turned over by this song and my boyfriend and I would sing it still a year after seeing the movie ! Maybe the book emphasized it way more but it is so strong in the movie as well though.
Haven't watched the movie yet but judging by the comments, I'm kinda disappointed that Kathy wasn't dancing with the baby doll. That was my favourite scene in the book, and the most emotional scene for me (once I understood it of course). Still, I'm loving how they made the song.
i can't believe this song actually exists! i've just finished Never Let Me Go (I mean, the book, 'cause i haven't watched the movie yet) and looked up the title of the song and the artist out of pure curiosity. and here it is.
The pillow clearly represents tommy and if you think otherwise i'd be asking your parents why they didn't enroll you in a school, that or you might be missing a heart...
I went crazy trying to find this damn song!! ahhhhh. this song makes me feel so happy, makes me imagine myself in a candelit room, wearing a 70's prom dress drinking wine while dancing around the room. :)
@headtrips1 It's strange you even made a comment pointing out your gender and how for some reason it's supposed to get in the way of enjoying this movie. I'm a guy also, but it doesn't fucking matter, it's not a girl movie, it's film for all adults.
There is a much better more haunting version of this song...and it is also sung by Jane Monheit - It is a jazz standard that can be found here on youtube. It is not a do-op (not that there is anything wrong with it) but a painfully haunting ballad, with simple accompaniment...sorry for the repeat, I am looking for a way to post it, but anyone intrested can find it. I wonder if the author of the book realizes about the two songs.
They really missed the boat with the film I think. The book is so detailed and you spend every chapter witnessing the world through Kathy's eyes, watching so closely all the emotions of the other characters. By Ruth witnessing Kathy's obvious longing for love and not Madame, had you not read the book you would never have realised this was Madame realising herself the children had a soul.
I've only cried reeeeally hard because of two movies: The Lovely Bones, and Never Let Me Go. I loved this movie so much, and Andrew Garfield is just... flawless. Carey is perfect, and Keira... I just wanted to slap her, but she was great, haha.
I like the way this scene was conveyed in the book a lot more. The scene in the book was a lot sadder, and was more effective when Madame saw her versus Ruth, because it alludes to what's to come.
@sincerelyjessy I agree. Madame looking on, aware of the impossibilty of Kathy's adolescent dreams, has a lot more pathos. I cried like a baby myself, especially at the heartwrenching cry from the guy in the country lane towards the end, when he had to give up his final hope of salvation, and Kathy could only comfort him helplessly. In the end, all we have is each other.
@FuckOff3086 - hi...i just saw this movie today....this movie moved me in a way that i haven't been moved in a long time. and yes!! this is a gorgeous song....so ridiculously perfect for this movie...its wierd...how this song was made so long before the movie...yet found its perfect home in this movie....its wierd. makes me think theres some sort of connection with all things.
i watched this on the flight back to my town. and i'm so so friggen' glad i did(: it's a wonderful movie<3 it's really depressing though ;c cos i i just wishhh that tommy and kathy had gotten together. and i have a question for people that have read the book, why couldn't kathy and all the other donors just run away? as in, not show up for their appointed donation times? i was just a bit confused on whether they were like sealed in on it or something?;o
@LiliputLemonade I don't recall it saying that there was really something obvious that was keeping them from running away (after they left Hailsham, of course). But I remember Kathy saying something about them being at peace with what they were made to do, even though it didn't seem exactly right.
I'm paraphrasing of course, but it was something along those lines. Plus, where would they go? They had little knowledge of how the outside world works. They might not have survived if they left.
yeah i kind of thought about that after i commented. they don't have anywhere to go, and plus i was thinking maybe they didn't even know they could run away, like maybe they didn't know any better cos that's how they were brought up, to donate.
that's exactly it. they don't know anything about normal life, becuase they were conditioned. the concept of running away is alien to them. making a donation is their purpose. and although they are afraid of it. they have no other option. I'm sure for all who ran away there was a consequence. a "real" child could have been in an accident, and needed a new heart. where do you think the naughty children clones go when they dissapear. not to a new home.they "complete" early.
They were treated well enough apart from the obvious. most people find it terrifying breaking away from everything they know, and most people have an idea of possible alternitives. They did not. They were not encouraged to really think for themselves.
but Tommy did say that the next generation of clones were battery farmed. if abused, people go off the rails. what Hailsham did was clever. they gently reinforced the purpose of the children's lives.
When I saw Kathy H. sitting on her bed listening to this cassette for the first time, I remembered the time I was her age, hugging a cushion, listening to words of love with such fervour, and dreaming....
I have this blasted on my speakers while I close my eyes and slow dance around the room. My neighbors may hate me but I can't help replaying this over and over while I just am thinking of bliss.
this is really a beautiful song, i just keep playing it after i finished the film. the lyrics are short and very simple, but they are telling the real story.
Sad film, make us think about our actions about people on the merge of our society, wich we try not to see. GREAT SONG, great actings, great playwright, direction, weirdly touching...
I looked this up because I am reading the book right now and just read about the part where she finds the tape and how she interprets it as in the oman had a baby after many tries and miscarriages. So far the book is so wonderful. :)

@twiggystardust65 I disagree. By having Ruth witness Kathy dancing with the pillow (rather than Madame), they clearly weren't trying to convey the baby fantasy. In the film, which centers even more than the novel on the love triangle/romantic tension, I believe the pillow represents Tommy.
@GunslingerXYZ That is probably true, but Ruth over Madame didn't have much to do with it not being a baby. Madame never thought it was a baby, that was just Kathy's interpretation, which was downplayed in the movie.
@GunslingerXYZ You're perfectly right. They replaced the word on purpose. But the book is more complex (as every book compared to the movie) and you get more fully the sense of tragedy of their lives if you don't focus only on the romance. Because Tommy, Ruth and Kathy share more than romance. They share part of a common person's life, and the same link with life, or a fate.
To be honest, after seing the movie i thought i ve been so thick i missed the romance from the beginning of the book.
@GunslingerXYZ And the loss of tommy is somehow more meaningful than the condition of never being able to live a fully human life, including the birthing of a child?
@twiggystardust65 I only watched the film and didn't know that she wanted a baby. Wow that's actually making me teary now. I guess that's also why she wanted to be a carer.
@vAmpBabe6 The song was composed and performed solely for the movie adaptation of Never Let Me Go, so it was only "done" a couple years ago. It's just supposed to be from the late 1950's, so it was made to sound as if it was.
I really wish I hadn't read the book right before the movie, because I felt that I was comparing them too much rather than enjoying the movie on its own. Great film though.
i saw the movie, and i cant find the book! im so angry because of this... im fifteen now, so im still young, dont tell that young people dont read if you dont have good books
sorry, maybe its a very stupid coment, but i cant believe they dont have such a book, the film was already beautiful, i cant imagine how beautiful that book would be
@beneathmydreams2 heya!! I'm 15 too! and I completely agree! terrible assumption people make about what 15year olds read(if they do at all),,, it's odd u can't fin the book though, like I bought mine in a clinic, but they should have it in any book shop! (easons, dubray books, bears and nobel - whereever shop is big in your constituency :) -)
the book was pretty good :) interesting, different, yet to see the movie, is it good?
The book and film are amazing, really make you think about love, life and death...

每当我听这首歌就会想起你,qiaochu。不纠缠,不代表忘记。Never let me go.最终我们错过了彼此。如果时光可以倒流,我一定唱这首歌唱到你可以紧紧的抱着我,而我可以深情的拥吻着你。

Sad film, make us think about our actions about people on the merge of our society, wich we try not to see. GREAT SONG, great actings, great playwright, direction, weirdly touching...

1.-When I read the book, I thought Judy Bridgewater did exist...
2.-I did thought it would sound like Julie London but would be more of a 'Cry me a river' song...

I looked this up because I am reading the book right now and just read about the part where she finds the tape and how she interprets it as in the oman had a baby after many tries and miscarriages. So far the book is so wonderful. :)

i think the producers of this movie really missed an important aspect of this book by changing the lyric "baby" to "darling."
twiggystardust65 11 months ago 88
@twiggystardust65 I disagree. By having Ruth witness Kathy dancing with the pillow (rather than Madame), they clearly weren't trying to convey the baby fantasy. In the film, which centers even more than the novel on the love triangle/romantic tension, I believe the pillow represents Tommy.
GunslingerXYZ 9 months ago 117
@GunslingerXYZ That is probably true, but Ruth over Madame didn't have much to do with it not being a baby. Madame never thought it was a baby, that was just Kathy's interpretation, which was downplayed in the movie.
Ironfruit 9 months ago
@GunslingerXYZ You're perfectly right. They replaced the word on purpose. But the book is more complex (as every book compared to the movie) and you get more fully the sense of tragedy of their lives if you don't focus only on the romance. Because Tommy, Ruth and Kathy share more than romance. They share part of a common person's life, and the same link with life, or a fate.
To be honest, after seing the movie i thought i ve been so thick i missed the romance from the beginning of the book.
strawberrysyrup9 8 months ago
@GunslingerXYZ And the loss of tommy is somehow more meaningful than the condition of never being able to live a fully human life, including the birthing of a child?

@twiggystardust65 I only watched the film and didn't know that she wanted a baby. Wow that's actually making me teary now. I guess that's also why she wanted to be a carer.

When was this song done? Can anyone tell me?
ANDREW GARFIELD <3 <3
vAmpBabe6 11 months ago 3
@vAmpBabe6 The song was composed and performed solely for the movie adaptation of Never Let Me Go, so it was only "done" a couple years ago. It's just supposed to be from the late 1950's, so it was made to sound as if it was.

@kitchenflails Cool. Thanks for the info

I really wish I hadn't read the book right before the movie, because I felt that I was comparing them too much rather than enjoying the movie on its own. Great film though.

it is a heartfelt song :) but why is there no "baby" in it? in the book, it mentioned that there was "baby" in it.

i saw the movie, and i cant find the book! im so angry because of this... im fifteen now, so im still young, dont tell that young people dont read if you dont have good books
sorry, maybe its a very stupid coment, but i cant believe they dont have such a book, the film was already beautiful, i cant imagine how beautiful that book would be
beneathmydreams2 1 year ago
@beneathmydreams2 heya!! I'm 15 too! and I completely agree! terrible assumption people make about what 15year olds read(if they do at all),,, it's odd u can't fin the book though, like I bought mine in a clinic, but they should have it in any book shop! (easons, dubray books, bears and nobel - whereever shop is big in your constituency :) -)
the book was pretty good :) interesting, different, yet to see the movie, is it good?
