The sword was rotoscoped out of the scene then cloned background (background in the beginning when the sword wasn't there could be put on a composite layer as a still). Simple to do really in After Effects. Try to make a fight scene as was done in King Kong, now that's a challenge! ;)

That scene is the BEST ad-lib in movie history. Originally meant to be a big fight scene, it took several takes none of which Lucas and Spielberg were going for, so Harrison Ford just to bring levity back to the set ad-libbed the whole gun thing and the rest is history.

WOW HAHA!!! At the end of that scene, some guy picks up the sword and runs off with it. Here, you see the same thing with the steel blade glinting in the light, but the glowing "lightsaber" blade is still on the ground. Look closely and you will see what i mean.
