In my Senior Comp Class, we have to write a movie script for a scene of a made up story. The scene should be "tension and dialogue hevay" and should spand 10-15 pages. Can anyone enlighten my mind to any ideas that would help me get started. Thanks
I violate the 10 words 3 sentences rule all the time and my actors hate it... thanks for the tip, you don't know how many lives you've just made better...
I am sure some of this may be debatable but these were tips that really made me think! As I start writing, I will definitely keep some of this in mind!
1) Writing Your First Movie Script 2) How to Get started 3) 3 Act Structure 4) Characters 5) Movie Script Length 6) Conflict 7) Protagonist 8) Supporting Characters 9) Story Turns 10) Fire Point 11) Plot and Subplot 12) Dialogue 13) Format Action 14) Format Narrative 15) Format Heading 16) Theme Patterns

Hey Mr. Dude in the movie here, don't listen to se of these people. Thanks for the tips. I'm glad for the basic guidance this offered. I'm just starting to write script, so it's very useful to me. :)

@drunkenanticss This is more of the basics type deal. He isn't making this video for people that are screenwriting prodigies, but also... Tarantino isn't as amazing a writer as people make him out to be now adays.
@blablaidontcarewhour I actually take back what I said on this video. I've been educating myself more about screenwriting and you're right, Tarantino isn't that great of a writer. Pulp Fiction is still one of my favorite movies but it was more the exception to the rule.
@drunkenanticss I actually thought the writing of Inglourious Basterds was even better, and that mainly due to the dialogue. Anyway, looking at movies like 12 Angry Men or Casablanca, it's hard to say that dialog isn't that important. I guess it always depends on the kind of movie you make. Usual Hollywood-movies or tv-productions don't need much, well-written dialog since they are quite simple most of the time. More "intelligent" movies do, however.
Great teacher. Great voice and I reckon he's related to Morgan Freeman. The voice is similar (which doesn't mean anything) however look at his eye shape and the resemblance is uncanny. I could listen to him for hours.
@HoopsEntertainment Yes! In my opinion anyone with true talent can break all the rules! If your shit is hot, it's hot! Our friend here is just giving the basics for the average JOE.
It's amazing how people get on here and have so much ridicule for someone that is attempting to give some knowledge or insight on something they care about. If you think you know so much better how about putting up a video of your own. Also he is giving rules of thumbs. There are always exceptions to this. Movies like Pulp Fiction and others that have a lot of dialogue break the rules but it is overlooked because of the person. I am sure a first time script writer would not fare as well.
Again, as I have said on so many of these writing guru lessons; my only problem, from John Turby, this guy to even Mckee, is what have they written. How come none of them have a great script that I can go rent the film and see what the preach in action? How come the guy who wrote A Few Good Men etc don't give seminars or make videos or books. It's also some one who seems to have a specific dogmatic approach but has not really succeeded in writing a memorable or even successful script.
@ Xelanderthomas: all I will tell you is that the one with professions feels like I will use it any time, but the successful are the one who don't know any thing since they wanna gain respect and, honors. Then they goes for all it takes to get them where they are and makes them looking better than pros.
I'm not sure if I made correct sense out of what you're saying it. You might want to re-state it more clearly. It looks like you're saying that people who write scripts that are actually made into to films "don't" know what they are doing because of the time and effort it takes to get a script produced. But these guys who don't have scripts produced know more because the "don't" produce. HUH?!! That's like I'm a better musician because no one plays my music.

This video is a piece of shit!! You're encouraging people to get rid of dialogue, for visuals? Haven't you seen some great films, like the beginning of Pulp Fiction or Inglorious Basterds, or most other film? The dialogue was wonderful, that's why it's called a script, for actors to read dialogue. Sure, a film has to be more visual than theatre but I disagree with you that "less words the better".
PLEASE HELP. I am 12, and I'm currently writing a film that I will co-direct. If you are involved in any way with movie biz, PLEASE REPLY. Even if its just to be a critic to my screenplay, I need all the help I can get.
i'm a student, 17 this year. i just want to ask, what do i do when i desperately want to write a movie script without any programs and gadgets, without knowledge about writing movie scripts? But i have ideas about stories for movies that i think that they are great and i really Really want to write them! I'm really serious about this and i want to ask a professional for help! Please offer me some help if you see my comment. i will be waiting for your reply!
if you believe that you have a good story don't rush into it otherwise your lack of experience will ruin your story. you should start with stories that you will be able to produce them yourself with a dv-cam to gain more experience and to send them to local festivals to win awards - it is not impossible! then use that experience and the little fame to move further ahead.
Great tips. Hey, for everyone out there that likes to make movies, I want to be a film composer, so if you guys need a composer, contact me and I'll help you guys out on the music part of your film. Some of my music is on my weebly site, which I have the link on my youtube channel. Check it out. Thanks.
pulp fiction is an example for me of good but seemingly pointless dialog which is there for our aural pleasure. quentin made that work. but this can also be a downfall as can be seen is the many dozens of wordy indie comedies that try and be clever but fail completely.
this doesn't always apply. pulp fiction for example. lots of talk about pointless bullshit, i.e. "royal with cheese". fun conversation can be really engaging and draw an audience into their particular character.

That's because they're trying to be wordy like Pulp Fiction. But Pulp Fiction uses dialogue to enhance atmosphere, which is why it works.
It is probably the most misunderstood script ever written.

this video is good, because it promotes not using dialouge... however,
to write good dialouge that is subtextual, or engaging, or comical, without just being about plot or circumstance.... there are alot of methods.
perhaps you could go into some of those methods.
