  • I violate the 10 words 3 sentences rule all the time and my actors hate it... thanks for the tip, you don't know how many lives you've just made better...

  • This is the only video I've seen that the CC works right.

  • I used to write scripts for movies, until I took a arrow in the knee.

  • I suck at writing dialogue. I'm only decent in narrative.

  • Dude! This guy sounds and looks like Morgan Freeman!!!

  • I am sure some of this may be debatable but these were tips that really made me think! As I start writing, I will definitely keep some of this in mind!

    Thanks!!!!

  • Ten word sentences? Three paragraphs? Use less dialogue??? This guy must not be familiar with Quentin Tarantino...

  • @repdale dang u totally stole my comment

  • hello, i saw your videos on screen writing and loved them. i am a novice at screen writing and would like to know everything i can about screen writing. i intend to add screenwriting to my career. so please can u help me? i need a complete tutorial session on screen writing. i do better that way than looking it up in parts. i hope to hear from you soon. thank you

  • Hey Mr. Dude in the movie here, don't listen to se of these people. Thanks for the tips. I'm glad for the basic guidance this offered. I'm just starting to write script, so it's very useful to me. :)

  • I wish i was mistaken for morgan freeman..... :( lol great vid man

  • OMG IT'S MORGAN FREEMAN!

    Oh wait...

  • thank you very much

  • Wait when you say Never use the main character to explain the story, don't you think you offend the creators of Fear and Loathin in Las Vegas?

  • Funny, the main character in Avatar explains the story and it those not work

  • @FelixTheory as a narrator... i'm not an expert but he never explains it in a dialog.

  • @herogna that's true. But then those it not destroy the concept of a protagonist? Especially when it is a Sci-fi

  • love it how he pronounces forward - "foweward"

  • he may sound like morgan freeman but he definately doesnt look like him.

  • Amazinggg

  • Wow, expertvillage usually sucks, but this is awesome.

  • Hey dude how can I get my movie seen or heard by producers?

  • This video is kind of debatable. Most Tarantino movies have a lot of dialogue that isn't really in relation to the plot.

  • @drunkenanticss This is more of the basics type deal. He isn't making this video for people that are screenwriting prodigies, but also... Tarantino isn't as amazing a writer as people make him out to be now adays.

  • @blablaidontcarewhour I actually take back what I said on this video. I've been educating myself more about screenwriting and you're right, Tarantino isn't that great of a writer. Pulp Fiction is still one of my favorite movies but it was more the exception to the rule.

  • @drunkenanticss I actually thought the writing of Inglourious Basterds was even better, and that mainly due to the dialogue. Anyway, looking at movies like 12 Angry Men or Casablanca, it's hard to say that dialog isn't that important. I guess it always depends on the kind of movie you make. Usual Hollywood-movies or tv-productions don't need much, well-written dialog since they are quite simple most of the time. More "intelligent" movies do, however.

  • Very good

  • ok! i watched all ur vids and i like them... BUT how do i write down the things on my script?

  • Quentin Tarantino didn't need this video...

  • Im trying to make a script for the Metal Gear Solid but this gonna be challenging the characters talk a lot in the game.

  • Great teacher. Great voice and I reckon he's related to Morgan Freeman. The voice is similar (which doesn't mean anything) however look at his eye shape and the resemblance is uncanny. I could listen to him for hours.

  • good video, thanks for the work you put into it

  • @HoopsEntertainment Yes! In my opinion anyone with true talent can break all the rules! If your shit is hot, it's hot! Our friend here is just giving the basics for the average JOE.

  • This dude is the Samuel L. Jackson of screen writing! LOL

  • good stuff

  • It's amazing how people get on here and have so much ridicule for someone that is attempting to give some knowledge or insight on something they care about. If you think you know so much better how about putting up a video of your own. Also he is giving rules of thumbs. There are always exceptions to this. Movies like Pulp Fiction and others that have a lot of dialogue break the rules but it is overlooked because of the person. I am sure a first time script writer would not fare as well.

  • lol you sound like morgan freeman :D

  • @IrisWasHere he does actually, same vocal tempo, the depth in the voice .

  • "Never let your main character use dialogue to explain."

I hope you finaly got that one Jorge Lucas.

  • Again, as I have said on so many of these writing guru lessons; my only problem, from John Turby, this guy to even Mckee, is what have they written. How come none of them have a great script that I can go rent the film and see what the preach in action? How come the guy who wrote A Few Good Men etc don't give seminars or make videos or books. It's also some one who seems to have a specific dogmatic approach but has not really succeeded in writing a memorable or even successful script.

  • @ Xelanderthomas: all I will tell you is that the one with professions feels like I will use it any time, but the successful are the one who don't know any thing since they wanna gain respect and, honors. Then they goes for all it takes to get them where they are and makes them looking better than pros.

  • I'm not sure if I made correct sense out of what you're saying it. You might want to re-state it more clearly. It looks like you're saying that people who write scripts that are actually made into to films "don't" know what they are doing because of the time and effort it takes to get a script produced. But these guys who don't have scripts produced know more because the "don't" produce. HUH?!! That's like I'm a better musician because no one plays my music.

  • helpful

  • He said if you want to write a play... write a play. Too much dialogue = space taken away from visuals.

We're writing a movie, correct? Let's stay focused then.

  • good vid

  • thank you=]

  • PLEASE HELP. I am 12, and I'm currently writing a film that I will co-direct. If you are involved in any way with movie biz, PLEASE REPLY. Even if its just to be a critic to my screenplay, I need all the help I can get.

  • dont u have to be like 13+ to have an youtube account?

  • Uh... no... YouTube is for everyone. Anyway, I'll be 13 in a week anyways. Why do you care?

  • Grow up...listen with your ears you should be so luck to be this knowledgeable...I ask who is 13???

  • i'm a student, 17 this year. i just want to ask, what do i do when i desperately want to write a movie script without any programs and gadgets, without knowledge about writing movie scripts? But i have ideas about stories for movies that i think that they are great and i really Really want to write them! I'm really serious about this and i want to ask a professional for help! Please offer me some help if you see my comment. i will be waiting for your reply!

  • @ ddin2012

if you believe that you have a good story don't rush into it otherwise your lack of experience will ruin your story. you should start with stories that you will be able to produce them yourself with a dv-cam to gain more experience and to send them to local festivals to win awards - it is not impossible! then use that experience and the little fame to move further ahead.

  • at this point can a DV-cam movies can also be rated as feature movies?

  • Kinda sounds like Morgan Freeman...Which strangely adds to the plausibility of the video.

  • I cant help but feel when it comes to comedy alot of conventional rules can be turned upside down in terms of story structure & dialogue.

  • If only the knowledge to write for the screen could actually be condensed into 3:18.

  • Great tips. Hey, for everyone out there that likes to make movies, I want to be a film composer, so if you guys need a composer, contact me and I'll help you guys out on the music part of your film. Some of my music is on my weebly site, which I have the link on my youtube channel. Check it out. Thanks.

  • I'm Currently Writing My First Movie. Its Part of a Trilogy. Its a Horror Movie set in Northern Ireland.

  • Cool. I love horrors. Horror music is my specialty.

  • I'm writing a script, wich will be shot over the summer 2009, and I actually need a composer

  • pulp fiction is an example for me of good but seemingly pointless dialog which is there for our aural pleasure. quentin made that work. but this can also be a downfall as can be seen is the many dozens of wordy indie comedies that try and be clever but fail completely.

  • John Wayne giving Michael Caine acting tips LOL! Thats the equivalant of Keanu Reeves giving acting tips to Tom Hanks.

  • Very Good video!! Thanks you very much.

This guy is the best of "expertvillage".

He's helping them to get a better reputation in youtube.

  • this doesn't always apply. pulp fiction for example. lots of talk about pointless bullshit, i.e. "royal with cheese". fun conversation can be really engaging and draw an audience into their particular character.

  • this video is good, because it promotes not using dialouge... however,

to write good dialouge that is subtextual, or engaging, or comical, without just being about plot or circumstance.... there are alot of methods.

perhaps you could go into some of those methods.

i know some for sure, but im not the teacher.

  • nice tips. Werry usefull

  • holly shit its morgan freeman!!!!, wait wait wait... never mind. great clip though. this is great

  • @hellsingorg2 Not only his voice, but his eyes are the same haha

  • Great tips!! Short and sweet, like it.

  • i like you, you sound like morgan freeman

  • Same eyes too.

  • thanks man

  • Good work.

    Thank you

  • great video thanks for the tips i'm attempting to write a short film for this idea ive had for years and never got around too, thanks the info is very helpful :)

  • no offence to you mr finigan, im just curious is all. You say your planning a short film for an idea youve had for years. How in this world has your many year long idea not expanded into a feature script instead of a short? short films are for those to scared to knocked out a feature - with that said, good luck to ya
