@PinkMarshmallows88 Well i said it's ez to learn. Mastering a language is something quite different :). Dutch is ez to learn, but to master it you need an iq above average and be good with languages. So many traps and weird sentences in it. You can say i'm going out in so many ways it's mindboggling ;)
interesting what he says @ the end...there to sell nuclear secrets and plutonium?!? WTF! I read a book once about a guy who was a CIA spy and his cover was a cleb...can't quite remember exactly what type of cleb but, makes me wonder...
English and Korean are both difficult to learn. Both are considered category 4 languages for their difficulty in grammar, their mixed base of languages (English uses Latin, Greek, Germanic and native plus a few other roots while Korean has a Sino, Altaic, and native base). Additionally they both have unique alphabets.
@PinkMarshmallows88 Not hard at all :p except for the chinese. Can't seem to get those tone-heights right :'). Spanish is pretty easy to learn compared to chinese. I speak fluent german, french, english and moderately good spanish :p. Dutch has so many different sentence building possibilities you go nuts if it's not your native language :P
@stevie3v0 Spanish is my mother language and I've never seen foreigners soften down their accent and polish their grammar in Spanish as good as non-English speakers learning English.
No wonder that Jim wanted to meet Kim. He was afterall the guy who was *krhhm* pro golfer , artist who composed 6 operas in two years, invented hamburger, controlled weather, expert of all industries and also praised around the world
@TryKeepUp808 No he hasn't, Hell doesn't exist, better to think his fat corpse is making a shit load of worms and beetles and bacteria really happy right about now!
@calvinbush1 Really? I'm a failfag? I made a joke! who said jokes have to be entirely accurate? So what, you think I give a fuck if Koreans are Christian? Why don't you go down a bottle of ambien you dumb fucking loser! Call me a failfag to my face you little bitch. I bet you're some 40 year old virgin sitting in your mom's basement with 5 other tabs open on your browser, all with gay porn on them
@JoyousinJesus I think that's the classification the CIA gives to Asian languages based on the difficulty and intensity it takes to learn it. But that could be based on their own program for teaching the languages, i.e. crash course.
@InvalidAuthorization When I studied it as a Far East Cryptologic Linguist for the U.S. Military, I was advised that the DoD (Department of Defense) assigned difficulty based on a 1-4 scale. Korean is a 4 and is considered one of the most difficult languages for English speakers to learn. Other 4s are Arabic, Japanese and Chinese.
@InvalidAuthorization It was fun for me because I enjoy learning other languages! Many people failed out of my class, that's expected. It's the most intensive language program out there, as far as I know. By the end of it, though, I was dreaming in Korean! Some people are good at languages, some people are good at playing instruments, some people are good at sports.. God blesses everyone with different skills :o)
@JoyousinJesus I love languages too and pick up pieces as I go. And usually because it's through Would you say it's true that korean is a hard language or do you think it was just the intensity of the program?
@InvalidAuthorization It's strange for me to say that learning Korean is "hard" because, for me, it wasn't. But the ability to learn other languages has always been easier for me than for other people I know. If you have a natural inclination toward learning other languages, then it shouldn't be too hard for you! Korean is in the same language family as Japanese so, if you can learn one, you can learn the other.
@JoyousinJesus i'm the same way, but I'm just curious if you agree it's a "level 4" because of overall difficulty or if it's just the crash course program's intensity. Like, if you took it like it was a HS language course, would you agree it's still difficult? (cuz i remember ppl complaining French was difficult, haha)
@InvalidAuthorization Oh, I see what you're asking. The level is assigned according to how difficult it is for an English speaker to learn. It has nothing to do with the school itself or intensity of the course.
@JoyousinJesus ah, gotcha. so you think it's subjective. it's only difficult if languages dont come easy or if you're not interested. but for someone like you, it wasnt too hard and you enjoyed it! ha! wonder if other ppl are "intimidated" from learning Korean or Japanese or Chinese because of what they hear about these levels? ...ok, Chinese is definitely hard for English speakers...the intonations are a nightmare! Korean and Japanese would defly be easier to learn.
@JoyousinJesus Really? I think Korean is VERY easy compared to Japanese. Correct pronunciation is harder, but it definitely helps motivate you when you can learn to read and write in another language within a day, compared to several years for Japanese and Chinese, what with all that Kanji crap. I'm learning all three, and Spanish, but definitely enjoy Korean the most.
Also, that's the exact job I'm going for right now, hahaha. Awesome.
@JoyousinJesus Thank you! From what I thought when I first started learning the languages, it seemed that Korean was kind of a halfway between Japanese and English, so actually a pretty good way to bridge the gap. Some words are similar in origin and sound to Japanese and Chinese, but Hangeul is a simple letter system as opposed to hieroglyphs.
But I digress. I just love learning languages so I'm going to stick with my passion and understand that it's not for everyone. :)
Really his coach was my professor. And really he is a wonderful coach and teacher. I am a just your average white girl growing up in the San Fernando Valley, and I get complimented on my accent all the time. One Korean gentleman asked me where I lived and studied in Korea, my accent was so good...Thanks Prof. Song! I saw the movie, and had not had contact w/ my professor in over 8 years and I watched it on Netflix and started yelling, "That's my professor!"
I am the "coach!" I am actually a dean of the Korean Language Program for the Korean government and professor for two of the universities in the California State University system. Jim did a great job! He tried very hard and we had better cuts. However, during the editing stage, I was in Korea for a meeting with one of the universities ... and they failed to choose the best cut. Either way, Jim's a great actor and student! Thanks for your comment!
@inlandsong lol Korean teachers are such perfectionists. So many actors often feel the studio doesn't choose the best cut so you're in good company. I would think, even in the editing stage, they would still have studio work to do for a scene like the one described. It makes sense to loop the Korean in a studio where you could get it perfect. Are you sure what you saw edited was the final version for sound? Thanks for posting.
He was doing awesome until... he talked about Kim Jong Il. Yeah, koreans wouldn't think that this one was funny. Anyhow, with the Korean he learned, he wouldn't even be fully functional in the North.
XD I just saw the part in the movie when he speaks Korean, and honestly, I don't think his coach can even go back to Korea now! XD
I kid, but I love Jim Carrey. It's just that his forte isn't the Korean language... or Korea's political state.. XD
