As much as i like basketball...basketball players are always getting more short-term injuries meaning. they will be out for 2 games or something and they are back. Hockey player are more prong to long term injures like concussions. I'd say hockey players have to be fit more PHYSICALLY because of the pure contact they face. Basketball players don't have to be all the physically fit. For the basketball players, lets see you take a puck to the body and see how long it takes for you to get up.

That break was bad, he will need pins in it. I had the same thing happen and I didn't realize it until I took off my glove either. There is a little thing called adrenaline that allows you to play through the pain without realizing the severity. With a high enough pain tolerance it is perfectly reasonable to play with a broken finger.
