I think it can be difficult for fans and viewers to view Mr.Lewis as a intelligent person. Jerry Lewis is a Genuis and it is unnervering, to no fault of his own but my own.
The Polaroid stock he mentions at 8:46 (and he did very well with that) would now be worthless. At least he made some money. Interesting interview, thatks for posting!!
That's because you're listening to the wrong people. The people who know better know he is talented. Maybe you should hang out with a better class of people, the kind that understand films and filmmaking. Then you can quit making the snide remarks.
"But I got some news for ya sweetheart"... Lewis never hung out wid dem LasVegas goodfellas did he? Dick Cavett was brilliant, Letterman's not a patch on him.
@yellingelk This video is ironic because when jery lewis had a talk show dick cavett was a writer on it lewis said he was going to have elenore roosevelt and winston churchill but had the same old crowd sammy davis he sat at a control console and editied it live with a joystic but that became a boring schtick
From what I can tell, Lewis was still on Percodan during this period - though not the full-blown addict he became later on in the '70's. This might account for part of his conduct in this interview (but ONLY part).
what gets me about these old shows is the FEW NUMBER OF ADS. I can't even watch tv without a dvr now cause so many ads. I also have always really liked jerry lewis and every facet of his career.
@zyxquark It dosen't help that so many modern ads are terrible, repeated in every break, and put no effort into selling you whats being advertised, oh, but they can make it black and white or some other effect!
That's a really interesting interview, in depth and intuitive, and as Streamline says it's a shame they don't do 'em that way these days. I mean, 9 minutes 46 seconds and he didn;t say "tell us about your new book" once!
Jerry always had ONE major axe to grind about Hollywood- and that was his contract with Hal Wallis at Paramount, which started when and he and Dean Martin were still a team. Jerry loathed Wallis, because he wanted the Martin & Lewis pictures to have better scripts, and Wallis' attitude was, 'People expect you to be an idiot, and Dean a handsome crooner. THAT'S what sells movie tickets, and that's why you two are box office gold, and I'm not changing that formula one bit'....
I feel he was challenged and impressed by the direct honesty of the questioning and was trying to meet that with honesty, even if sometimes it risked coming off as arrogant or snide, or just not extremely entertaining. He has always had to fight for his vision of things and sometimes he hit it out of the park and sometimes he missed. This pretty much happens to everyone who tries to put something out there.
The closest thing we have on TV to the Dick Cavett Show is Charlie Rose on PBS. Intelligent talk shows like Cavett's have pretty much been driven off network broadcasting because they couldnt get the big ratings

Thumbs down.....what a self important asshole in this interview. Classic Megalomaniac. Every line he thinks he's been sent from the Gods to teach the masses.
He's an asshole, but he's an honest asshole. It's actually refreshing. Too bad the celebs of "today" can't be that honest or politically incorrect, and the ones who are are talked about bad by the press!!
I think he's a little like me in that he wants things to be perfect when it comes to his work. He sounds like a tough business man. He's so goofy on screen but very smart and business like in person.
@DannyBruiz At least Jerry was being honest about not wanting to be bothered by the fans. His only obligation to the public begins and ends onstage. He doesn't have to cater to the autograph hounds and picture takers if he doesn't want to. This notion that a celebrity must make him(or her)self available to the fans at all times is ridiculous anyway. Get over it!
@sd02231 Johnny Carson once said: "I couldn't care less what anybody says about me. I live my life, especially my personal life, strictly for myself. I feel that is my right, and anybody who disagrees with that, that's his business. Whatever you do, you're going to be criticized. I feel the one sensible thing you can do is try to live in a way that pleases you. If you don't hurt anybody else, what you do is your own business."
That's how great entertainers - including Jerry Lewis - think.
I will never forget my experience meeting Jerry Lewis backstage in the 70's when he was guest hosting The Tonight Show in LA. I found it odd that people walking out from the show were trashing him. There were children, grandmas, and all kinds of people waiting in the alley for him to come out and get a autograph.
When he came out, he said to his body guards..."I'm not on stage anymore. Get these fucken people out of the way." Kinda weird to see this guy that was funny all the time and then this?
Fascinating story. Just goes to show you how show biz people's REAL persona can be LIGHTYEARS away from the image they create (or at least try to create).
The host (Cavett) sounds like a very intelligent guy and bloody good at his job. I take it he was the KING of American talkshow hosts back in the day ??
@johnnycheck99 Johnny Carson was the King. Cavett was a bit more high-brow although when he interviewed entertainers it wasn't much different than Carson.
@ Viddrome Why do people believe that someone has to morally perfect or even a nice person to be a star? Talented people are always difficult. They have to be, either to accomplish anything worthwhile or to deal with the judgmental morons they meet on a daily basis. It's one of the unfortunate but necessary aspects of stardom.
@BRUC2016 AMEN!!! People always confuse self-esteem with being self-riteous. They are jealous because they wish they were as confident! Thank you for saying this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows it.
Confidence is a good thing and if more "people" had it they would be more tolerable -___- and less bitchy.
@DrunkenPiano I'm not overly concerned with a performer's "attitude" as long as the
finished product is something I like. Jerry Lewis' movies are juvenile and feature
Jerry Lewis about 99% of the time. As if that matters....bottom line: are his movies entertaining? To me they are, so who cares about his "ego"? People forget what a giving and caring person Lewis has been....just his work for MDA qualifies him for sainthood.
People without talent-- or people who have not been able to develop their gifts-- have a repressed neurotic ego that projects its own self-hate(misery) onto successful individuals who exhibit confidence-- the one thing most people lack. So, it is easy to be validated for expressing one's envy via criticism because so few get the opportunity to express their genius.

@sd02231 I agree !! Such jackass ppl who roam this world ... fucking hating on one of the greatest minds and creative geniuses of comedy and film making in history ! Uggghhh ... I have never met a person in life who doesn't like Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lewis was quite a prankster. He has some recordings I've heard of prank phone calls he made and they are drop dead funny. The Jerky Boys have nothing on him.
That said I really like seeing the more serious side of Jerry, he's a very assured and intelligent guy.
So making intelligent thoughtful comments makes you an arrogant whiney a**hole?
I don't know what's wrong with people today, all they want to do is lay down and take it and then put other people down who actually put up a fight. Better to fight than be a floor mat.
This joke about the French and Jerry Lewis is very tired. The French critics simply pointed out the genius in some of his films underneath of what was taken for crass comedy. That's all. P.S. The movie "King of Comedy" is brilliant.
I love you Jerry Lewis. You're a fine actor, director, and producer. You're movies, in a sense kept me from going crazy in this insane world. Instead of anger, I use laughter. You taught me that. You are so appreciated. Thank you. I wanted to say that to you while you are still alive and still walking this earth. -Michelle-
I've gone from a great admirer to actually disrespecting to finally believing that I understand this Man. When I was very young he was the funniest man I had ever seen. When I was in my late 20s I though that this is the corniest guy ever. Now, later in life I understand just what a true Humanitarian this Saint of a Man truly is. Zero personal benefit and 100% for the suffers of this disease. Even in spite of ingrates gone politically mad! May God Bless Jerry Lewis for all he's done and will do.
He'll always be known as the man who strove to conquer MD, and put himself in a place that was likely to attract derision from others, while others were attracted to the true love that is inside this man. He lives on because he still has work to do. Merry CHristmas and Happy Holidays to all!
jerry was ok, he has a point to make, nothing is worth giving up your own creativity. the producers and company heads at the time were, and many still are total pricks. jerry was ok, he listened to ideas.
I just stumbled on this video and decided to watch. I know nothing about Jerry Lewis because I'm a 31 year-old black male, but I can tell this is an interesting fellow. You don't see this on late night talk anymore.
I know that, but I mean here he is really full of himself. Watch him when he's older on Inside the Actor's Studio--he is older and very down to earth and talks about his big ego during the time this Cavett interview was aired.
Rowan Atkinson is great, but not as good looking as Jerry! Jerry is gorgeous here, tall, with beautiful face... and everything... you cannot say that about Rowan Atkinson, who, indeed, is a great comedian, even if not handsome, like Jerry.
I didn't know that...sad. Of course we all know what happened between him and Dean Martin but thank goodness they made up. It's actually worth seeing them meet up on live television as a surprise to Jerry. Search "Martin and Lewis Reunion" on YouTube search.
jerry was funny, and is funny. without jerry thered be no Jim Carrey....jerry took absurdity to a new level, he also invented video assist playback, so people could see the last take and adjust....what did you ever contribute to comedy eurovision0portugesedouche?
Thank you for your brainy answer. Maybe I was wrong and you are a very fulfilled person, but in your free time you just enjoy bitching about those like Jerry Lewis, who are (much) more successful and appreciated than you'll ever be? Ok, now I don't feel sorry for you anymore.
Thank you for your brainy answer. Maybe I was wrong and you are a very fulfilled person, but in your free time you just enjoy bitching about those like Jerry Lewis, who are (much) more successful and appreciated than you'll ever be? Ok, now I don't feel sorry for you anymore.
I was lucky to see Dean and Jerry in a Miami nightclub many years ago when they were just becoming famous. Dean started the show by himself, going on and on without Jerry. People were wondering what was happening, when Jerry finally appeared about 15 minutes late. We found out later that he had been outside in the street directing traffic and performing for the people who couldn't get in to see the show. I've loved him ever since!!
Well, in another one of these clips-he say's that he made his first stage appearance 41 years ago at the age of 5. That'd make him 46 here. Born in 1926. 46 + 1926 = 1972. So the year was 1972. haha
I was lucky to see this man in "Damn Yankees; in kansas Ciy some years ago. He did a stand up also that night. Very memorable and a very entertaining man on stage.
jerry always seem yoinger than he is, and for what i have heard from books anout his child hood he is still very clever and pashionate man. i wish i knew someone like him i bet hes a real nice person
I agree he looked youthful during his middle years but when he hit his 60s, he really started to age quickly. now, he looks much older than his chronological age. but here, he definitely looked great.
I have a completely different opinion of Jerry Lewis after seeing this clip, there is a reason he is one of the biggest guys in the business, total professional, level headed and intelligent guy - amazing guy.
I love Jerry so much; I wonder if he ever looks at this stuff. I often wish I had been born earlier, I would love to have been in the audience at this interview. What a wonderful, intelligent, and hell sexy guy.
I want to go to film school but i always get upset when i realize that i will never be taught by him.... there's always be a part of me that knows that I was born at the wrong time
Umm, there's something you should know: you REEEAAALLY would not have been happy to have been instructed by Jerry Lewis. Royal-Pain-In-The-Ass, or Pompus-Ass understates how he is in real life.He would've made you miserable.
Not really. The other professors at USC, are much better. He's not the only high-falootin' persona' to teach, and teach terribly. I had a friend who once had to take a class at UCLA of the History of Jazz, taught by Dr. Demento. It was an effing nightmare!
Jerry Lewis talking about folk asking him to a party SO he will make jokes, and his prefering to be asked to a party, as a human thinking thing behind that comic guise; is theorised in the book by Melanie Klein -see google booksearch.
I think it can be difficult for fans and viewers to view Mr.Lewis as a intelligent person. Jerry Lewis is a Genuis and it is unnervering, to no fault of his own but my own.

He'll always be known as the man who strove to conquer MD, and put himself in a place that was likely to attract derision from others, while others were attracted to the true love that is inside this man. He lives on because he still has work to do. Merry CHristmas and Happy Holidays to all!

He is a cleaver man. He knows exactly how to make people see it his way. He is not angry or said.. He is the greatest.....

this is the sexiest Jerry's ever been, love him

jerry was ok, he has a point to make, nothing is worth giving up your own creativity. the producers and company heads at the time were, and many still are total pricks. jerry was ok, he listened to ideas.

there's something about Cavett that annoys me

lol...he is such a Douche Bag!
ZABRISKIEPOINTER 2 years ago
He did change though. If you watch any recent interviews he's much nicer and not full of himself.
dodadue89 2 years ago
I just stumbled on this video and decided to watch. I know nothing about Jerry Lewis because I'm a 31 year-old black male, but I can tell this is an interesting fellow. You don't see this on late night talk anymore.

Jerry Lewis really thinks he's Buddy Love.
dedbusted 2 years ago
He based Buddy Love on himself, so he IS Buddy Love.. .
HyperKonijn 2 years ago
I know that, but I mean here he is really full of himself. Watch him when he's older on Inside the Actor's Studio--he is older and very down to earth and talks about his big ego during the time this Cavett interview was aired.
dedbusted 2 years ago
he did not, you idiot.

Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) is just like Jerry. Intelligent and Funny
wild14me 3 years ago
Rowan Atkinson is great, but not as good looking as Jerry! Jerry is gorgeous here, tall, with beautiful face... and everything... you cannot say that about Rowan Atkinson, who, indeed, is a great comedian, even if not handsome, like Jerry.
MrsXantipa 2 years ago 4
Totally agree with you. Jerry used to be a hot piece, very elegant and with such an a delicious voice...
MnemosyneTheGoddess 2 years ago 6
He is more than intelligent, he's absolutely brilliant. I love this interview. I also admire Dick Cavett, a very cultivated man. Thanks for posting!
MrsXantipa 3 years ago 8
Shows how intelligent and shrewd a business man he was/is,behind the zany characters and manic behavior.
hamtrak 3 years ago 8
@hamtrak 95% of the population has an IQ within the range of 75 - 130.... Jerry Lewis' is 145... so yeah, one would say he is pretty intetlligent :^)

Orsen Welles thought Jerry Lewis was a pompous jerk who was overrated as a director. I wonder what the hell went down with those two.
drummer78 3 years ago
I didn't know that...sad. Of course we all know what happened between him and Dean Martin but thank goodness they made up. It's actually worth seeing them meet up on live television as a surprise to Jerry. Search "Martin and Lewis Reunion" on YouTube search.

JERRY = FAKE & TALENTLESS IMBECIL (& the most pompous of all tv clowns)

are you serious about Jerry Lewis (talentless?!)
Charls976 3 years ago
jerry was funny, and is funny. without jerry thered be no Jim Carrey....jerry took absurdity to a new level, he also invented video assist playback, so people could see the last take and adjust....what did you ever contribute to comedy eurovision0portugesedouche?

Thank you for your brainy answer. Maybe I was wrong and you are a very fulfilled person, but in your free time you just enjoy bitching about those like Jerry Lewis, who are (much) more successful and appreciated than you'll ever be? Ok, now I don't feel sorry for you anymore.

Falderal1211 3 years ago 4
Jerry may have his foibles, but the bottom line is that he made many people laugh for years. You cant put a price tag on that. Long live Jerry Lewis!
Landrew120880 3 years ago 5
what year is this from?
Janster59 3 years ago
Well, in another one of these clips-he say's that he made his first stage appearance 41 years ago at the age of 5. That'd make him 46 here. Born in 1926. 46 + 1926 = 1972. So the year was 1972. haha

That surprised me, too. I read somewhere that his IQ is 163

jerry is and has always looked young for his age. He seems eternally youthful
anthony0411 3 years ago 3
I agree he looked youthful during his middle years but when he hit his 60s, he really started to age quickly. now, he looks much older than his chronological age. but here, he definitely looked great.

I have a completely different opinion of Jerry Lewis after seeing this clip, there is a reason he is one of the biggest guys in the business, total professional, level headed and intelligent guy - amazing guy.
ledwatch 4 years ago 3
I love Jerry so much; I wonder if he ever looks at this stuff. I often wish I had been born earlier, I would love to have been in the audience at this interview. What a wonderful, intelligent, and hell sexy guy.
pammy1971 4 years ago 3
I want to go to film school but i always get upset when i realize that i will never be taught by him.... there's always be a part of me that knows that I was born at the wrong time
ravenhawk1326 4 years ago
Umm, there's something you should know: you REEEAAALLY would not have been happy to have been instructed by Jerry Lewis. Royal-Pain-In-The-Ass, or Pompus-Ass understates how he is in real life.He would've made you miserable.
Dreaded88 4 years ago
that's too bad.
ravenhawk1326 4 years ago
Not really. The other professors at USC, are much better. He's not the only high-falootin' persona' to teach, and teach terribly. I had a friend who once had to take a class at UCLA of the History of Jazz, taught by Dr. Demento. It was an effing nightmare!
Dreaded88 4 years ago
it sounds like it lol. I just mean it's so sad that he feels he has to behave that way.
ravenhawk1326 4 years ago
that's hardling "bitching"...Jerry is a class act here.

Jerry Lewis talking about folk asking him to a party SO he will make jokes, and his prefering to be asked to a party, as a human thinking thing behind that comic guise; is theorised in the book by Melanie Klein -see google booksearch.
Cheers.
