  • Thanks for sharing, It's always nice to see knowledgeable folks who are teaching others. Vinnie :-)

  • Steve, can you possibly show some of your signiture moves/technique. Usually a home base that you tend to work around from your A point to B, go off road a bit then head to C, go off round a bit and return to home B? LOL, if you understand what I mean.. I would like to know some of your signiture A, B, and C licks..

  • I will like to play like that!

  • shit man!!! extreme nice!!!

  • Damn i haven't see the lesson! great! i'll work on that. But i have a little question:

It's hard to see where you get neck could you tell me please some of the fret you'r mainly usin (for me it's seems to be the third the fifth and the seven ) anyway thank's a lot for this lesson!

  • @CapitaineBuisson 3, 5 7 & 12... mostly, Thanks Capt,:)

  • @ardentoctopus

    Thank's a lot :D

  • You are the man dude

  • Hi Steve,

Your playing is excellent, can u include some tab?

  • @rossliner Sorry, I don't do TABS.... They are in impediment to improvisation... play it your way:)

  • Comment removed

  • Steve, you have inspired me. You obviously enjoy what you are doing and have made me realise that learning and playing should always be fun and not a chore.

    Many thanks.

  • @whatbloodyinjuns Cool brotha, thanks for the kind words... I do love playing be it slide, regular stuff or even my ukulele. Something like 3 parts fun to 1 part skill:) ... When nothing else goes the way you planned the music will never let you down!

  • well it was nice the first time and it still sounds great now brilliant my friend

  • How did you learn to play slide? I dont know where to start :-). Thx for a great video. Jacob, Denmark

  • @nixton8818 I did not have a clue, I just wanted to play and figured it out via trial and error... heavy on the error bit:)

  • I can't get enough of this song...I swear ! Gotta learn it soon !

  • its called muting, not muffling.

  • @RT101894 Thanks, we will all sleep better now.

  • @ardentoctopus no problem

  • @ardentoctopus Lol, excellent response to a troll

  • Thanks man! This is rly helpful! It's really some basic stuff once you get the slide technique perfected(but that's the hard part!)

  • or a guitar you converted to a dobro, at least

  • OK, not a DOBRO, has no resonator plus DOBRO is a brand name now owned by Gibson, It is a Yamaha with a nut extender turning it into a queasy faux Dobro, sorta, without the resonator bit... Yea, that's what it is!

  • well yeah, but what would call a guitar like that, if not a dobro? i mean, you can't exactly play that thing with your fingers alone, lol

  • is that a dobro?

because the strings look raised at least a half inch off the frets in the other video, but you don't really mention that, so yeah

  • awesome playing!

think u can send me the tabs???? pretty plz? :) lol

  • You should be on tour with Seasick Steve!!....your brilliant...! Made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck..WOW.

  • Thanks, WIRK wed night at 7, live broadcast from Tappers Ore House in Lake Worth.... All the best and keep picking:-

  • i started playing a year ago just learning about open d tuning.can play black crowes talks to angels but thats it for the open d so its nice to find something else to play in that tuning anytthig else out there?

  • @upperpd - Allman Brothers "Little Martha", and the intro to Joe Walsh's "Confessor" are played in open D - the only other 2 I know of.

  • excellent playing ..really enjoyed that!!!...post some more..

  • can i get tabs somewhere?

  • Big blues fan and love to listen to all types, acoustic/electric. Keep posting and I'll keep watching.

  • Thanks

  • Where did you learned that .? At the crossroads? Just kidding!!

  • Yea, Victory and Clove, Staten Island

  • Thanks, mate that was very helpful and really inspiring indeed.

To anyone who may concern the tuning goes like this:

    Low-high; D-A-D-F♯-A-D (open D tuning)

  • awesome 5 *

Do you use the middle finger behind the slide to deaden the unwanted stings??

  • Exactly

  • thanks man, this is great, can't go wrong with that old school slide, thanks for the help

  • This is AWESOME!!!!! LOVE IT MAN!!!

  • MAN!.. i really like this video.. could you pls tell exactly the tuning string by string? U MADE MY DAY.. finally something new to learn on guitar.. thank u.

  • D-A-D-F♯-A-D (open D tuning) ... Thanks

  • Very nice! Thanks for the generous lesson. Hope to be that good someday too!

  • u got skill with the blues

  • what tunning are u suing man?

  • Tuned to D, ty

  • ouch! thats too hot to touch. great playing steve. i wish i could learn some of that. but alas, i'm too lazy, ha, ha. i'd rather plop down on my fat behind and enjoy listening to your great playing instead. i enjoy living vicariously through other very good players playing. i'm working on a couple new facial expressions as i pretend its me playing. well i have to get back to my potato chips now. but thanks a million and i really enjoyed listening to your great playing my friend.

    stay cool.

  • Is that a nut extension on your guitar?

  • Steve, How high are your strings off the fretboard? Thanks

  • Hey Neil, I am not sure how to get a msg to you with the My Chingo thing so if you see this the slide should not be floppy loose but not tight like a ring, A comfortable easy on easy off. Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the vids, c'ya at GC:-)

  • This sounds really good it has inspired to want to try playing slide...what do you think is the best kind of slide to start out with? Glass, brass?

  • Different materials create different tone, try and find one that fits comfortably, glass for a lighter touch if the action is low and brass for a bit of dirty grit, have fun with it.

  • what do you think about steel? i use a steel slide at the moment and i was told its sorta between glass and brass do you no if this is rite? lol

  • I prefer Glass and Brass to steel, but I have no quarrel with those who like steel. GL

  • title song name plz.....

  • I think I play about 7 or 8 different songs in this any one of which can be easily found in upward of 8 or 10 different songs or used to write your own. I don't believe in being specific, the point being the technics that you can apply to whatever songs you like. People have accused me of steeling songs but know body owns the blues and I lay claim to none of it, that said, I was just improvising. Or better put, standing on the shoulders of giants. Good luck.

  • Yeah.. very good!! re thanks man!!

  • What scales do you use to improvise?

  • Pentatonic is basically it in most blues, for me anything else is an accidental.

  • Jow steve, nice vid, really dig it, I just recently started playing slide on an acoustic guirtar, and I defenitely want to do the bass thing with it, but i'm finding it rather hard. I'll try and get those picks you use, Keep on playing!

  • Thanks, I don't always use the picks, just keep at and keep it simple.

  • You must be the best at this!

  • Thanks for breakin it down so hard! Think it is sinking in!

  • you are just great.

  • What is the raised nut for? are you actually pushing down on the frets with the slide, or using the slide as a kind of fret? this sounds really fun to jam with, i'd like to learn

  • You got it. The slide is the fret and we never press behond the pressure needed.

  • this guy is very good!!!

  • so when you say open d tuning do you mean you tuned the low E to a d and then tuned the other strings to it?

  • the open D tuning is D, A, D, F#, A, D

  • thanks.

ive been playing a while but my music theory isnt up to par lol.

  • so what kinda slide is the best to use on acoustic guitars??

    glass or brass?

  • Different slides for different feels and tones, no best just what you like best.

  • bavarian blues... well... how ever (dont like bavarians xD)

great vids dude. i could listen to you the whole day. guess i have to start learning slide guitar too.

greetings from germany (yeah as coburg said, your vid arrived us :p)

  • Great video your an awesome blues guitarist. Any song you would recommend for starting blues? I am starting blues on my red Ariel guitar.

  • at 5:15 in the vid are you thinking about the song "you got to move" ? love what you are doing... looks like if you keep it up you might end up with trigger #2 ( willie nelson guitar with a hole worn ... you know the one ) :)

  • Yes or Come On In My Kitchen is about the same,

That old Yamaha has been with me since 1974 and for what I use it for it rocks... Big boomy tone, even my Gibsons or Yari can't touch it. Thanks for the comments... I like your stuff and will be checking out more, cheers

  • Finaly your Vid is arrived in Germany - Bavarian.. and i`d like to say THAAAANK YOUU for that gread video.. i`m currently playing blues sind 6 monath and about 2 monat with your videos with listening an all that stuff.. when im good enough i post a Bavarian Blues Vid.. KEEP IT UP STEVE. ***** AWESOME !

  • Thank you my Bavarian Blues Brotha, I appreciate the kind words.

  • Wow that was excellent. I just recently started learning slide and I mostly try and play in open D and I just capo for E or anything else and its really great, anything else in open D thats really awesome and we should all know about?

  • Cool, no capo on my guitar with that raised nut but you can certainly do allot of cool stuff when you add fingers to the mix.

  • Whoow ..i like that video ... thank you to show a Calabrese how to play the slide Blues...Man....

Grazie ........can i mail you for more question???

  • Thanks ... If there questions I can answer I will give it a go... I am working on a lesson vid with a production company but that will cost money to produce and put out so will not free, but I am working to keep the cost low.

  • tocas de puta madre

  • i love your style and the tune is really goood

iv seen slide guitar strike again over 50 times il love it so much and want to play it on electric guitar but im just a beginner

    but keep playing

Greats from a Dutch guitar player

  • Cool Brotha! keep playing. Much appreciated.

  • eh, thats cool. its in open d yeah? its really a cool tune. i been playin metal up to now so the blues and slide thing is kinda new to me, but thanks much for the vids

  • excellent! guess im takin a chance here.. any chance of getting a tab of that? its bitching

  • Sorry never use tabs, I have an improvisational approach to everything. I like to learn a basic structure and then just attempt to stay in key.

  • thats incredible man. btw, have you modified the nut on that guitar at all?

  • Yes, I put a nut extender on it so it is set up like a lap steel or Dobro even though I play it held up. Thanks, buy the way you don't have to do that to play this but bad action helps.

  • lmao..dude i'm honored that you would put this as a response to my vid...you're awesome bro!! thanks!!

    gatemouth

  • ah man...ive always wanted to learn how to play like this!! its sooo cool.

  • finally a lesson where the teacher doesnt take 5 hours just to get through the first 4 notes. this was awesome thanks

  • Nice to hear, I wonder sometimes if I go to fast for people since it seems to be simple stuff to me. I often forget how long it actually took me to get to this point and I am vary aware that I still have a hell of a lot to learn, I'm happy to share what I can and very pleased when it helps.

  • Really great lesson, I'm just starting to learn slide after 62 years, I have the time now, and you motivated me. Thanks Steve.

  • Thanks, your comments are greatly appreciated, best of luck.

  • Great video. I have been inspired. Spending all my guitar time in D with a slide for the past month.

  • D is my fav, getting to your comment a month later I am sure by now you've past me.

  • Good lesson, Steve, and love your playing.

  • could you make a slower playthrough?

  • That is such a beautiful guitar man, it looks like it has survived the years, what kind is it?

  • ++Thanks, it is a Yamaha FG-110 I got as a kid in 1974, it was used but faily new at the time. I striped the finish off to let the sound out from behind the varnish about 30 years ago.

  • Wow!!! If anyone can play better than that, I can't wait to hear them!!! That is Excellent!!! Do you ever play slide on an electric guitar? If so I would like to see a video of that also. Thanks!!!

  • Thank you. very informative. Sounds great too!

  • hey i commented on the other slide video. is there any chance u can post some tabs?/

  • sorry, have none, never use them. Not really a note for note kind of guy and I just have never had the patients for reading them. Thanks

  • What mods have u done to your guitar???

Because you need a very high action to play slide guitar!!!

  • Just a nut extender, not a permanent mod. Google that along with the word DOBRO and you should find it. Thanks

  • lol he looks like an octopus lol lol.

  • NICE man!!

  • Nice man Open D or G here. Thanks

  • D on all of this stuff, I like E as well but only play in G whwn tuned to an E chord as G tuning moves the root to the 5th string and I dun like it. Thanks

  • that sounds freggin awesome

  • dood you need to play southern mississippi blues. that'd be so frigin awesome!!!!!

  • Bravo, Bravo!!!

    Awesome.

    Can we download your music??

Please say yes, please say yes!!!

    Cheers, see ya!

  • Hi,

I just wanted to say thanks for your excellent video. I learned more from watching and listening to you than I have in months worth of formal lessons. You've inspired me to pick my slide once again. I hope you find time to make more videos like this one.

    Excellent...thank you.

  • Thank you, very glad ti here it was helpful. I plan to do more just not sure when I will get to it yet so please stay subscribed.

  • hi. i cant get that sound that you have, i'm using classic nylon guitar and chorme slide. is that why?

  • Yes... chrome and nylon is not a good sound, You need a steel string and Brass or Glass, thanks

  • Thanks for posting this....very helpful

  • Your playing is absolutely amazing. How did you get your action so high though, did you buy an extension nut or just set your action up really high and use thick strings?

  • Thanks and yes I use a nut extender turning it into a lap style DOBRO, kinda sorta...

  • .... this dosnt work on nylon strings does it?

and im using a medal cigar case for a slide

  • thanks very much it's really helpful.

what kind of slide would you prefer(brass-glass-ceramic)?

  • I have and use all 3 and my fav is just my mood, I don't like chrome. good luck

  • hey man ur really kewl and an amazing blues slider.. but do u have any things or tips from the oen D tuning

i cant find anything for it and its really hard...

  • Do you play somewhere? I'd like to go to the US just to hear you play.

  • man, your guitars old, but it sure is cool

  • he dude nice guitar playing

i've only been playing metal and jazz so far but this shit gives me insiration

  • Excellent lesson, I love listening to you play. Gonna hafta watch this a few times. Keep up the vids.

  • When I use my slide on my guitar (acoustic) it makes a lot of pinging noise. It drives me crazy! What am I doing wrong. It doesnt seem like your muting other than the bass string. Is it my guitar? It's a real cheap one.

  • Keep trying, I am only muting the Bass. I can not speak to the quality of your guitar but mine is an old beater, good luck.

  • you need to drag your fingers behind the slide, it's called dampening, it eliminates the ping and scratchy stuff you don't want to hear

  • Hey thanks, man. That does help!

  • no prob, anything to help a fellow musician

  • Great lesson,a helpfull explanation for people like me with no formal training in music. I recon the guitar gods must smile when you play.

  • DADF#AD?

  • yep

  • or the slides they use in the intro

  • This seems to remind me of the world series of poker theme

  • hats off to steve, holy shit

  • magnifique,i like the soul, the sound and this instrument

    thank you

    david

  • wooow...amazing.. keep the good work up!

  • woowee!

  • absolutley brilliant im in NZ i hav been playing for about 7 months and saw the slides the ova say at my local music store and thought i wonder how hard it is to play so i got 1 hopped here on youtube and started playin basic stuff straight away ur amazing and hopefully wen u break these down a bit i can pick sum stuff up thanks for the inspiration im definintly gonna keep at it

    cheers

  • Thanks... much appreciated. I will do some more and break it down a bit in the new year. All the best

  • YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO ME!!!!

dude i come all the way from Denmark!!

and there is nothing more i want to do than to sit on my porch playing music like that!

    amazing.

  • Are you using your left hand to make any chords, or is the bottle actually "fretting" the strings for you. I know that you aren't supposed to touch the strings to the frets with the slide, but as I'm learning I notice that touching the bottle to a string gives the same sound as if you did. And then I can just pick. Am I right about this?

  • All the left hand does is move the slide up and down the neck. There are techniques that impliment chords and the slide together, but they are not used in this video. The way he gets his sound is he picks with his right hand on various strings that haronize well with each other. Other than that it's mostly knowing the blues scales and where they are represented in the o
