This movie is so beautiful and incredible....The animation, the plot, everything. I would go see something like this, or Persepolis, or a Ghibli film ANY day, instead of a Pixar film.
These days I;m certain that whoever's in charge of big media like Movies and TV have something against smaller productions like this.
Where i come from, not only was this film not released in theatres, but there were no commercials or advertisement for the DVD release. I only found out about it when I happened to walk past it in the shop.
Films like this need to be given more attention than they're getting.
And it needs to be from us, beause those in charge clearly have no intention to do it.
@Bloodshotshatterbone the issue with the movie industry here is that people are afraid to take chances. millions of dollars go into a 2 hour movie. no one wants that wasted. so when some ambitious writer comes up with a good movie, no studio wants to take it up. they would rather make another transformers or something that people are GUARANTEED to see. That is why many people turn to indie movies. but the industry tries to suppress them. so, support indie and foreign films!
@VeeVeeVienna I was just thinking that this reminds me of a blend of Samurai Jack and Kim Possible. The characters are more in the style of KP, but the set-pieces are definitely reminiscent of Samurai Jack.

@Killryde nar man, 3d can get there but I think the big problem with why CG hasnt caught up in a sense is because your restricted by the technology and the program whilst 2D is really only restricted by your imagination.

I'll take shens beautifully choreographed fight scenes or most of what pixar has to offer over this any day. Then again, I don't really like this movie or its style. Get a Movie like the prince of Egypt, spirited away, or any of the disney films from the 90's and then ill admit its the superior form of animation.

I didn't like this movies as much as I thought I would. The animation is undeniably art work in itself and probably the movies biggest strength. But the story turned out a lot less interesting than I was hoping. But it was a nice break from the norm.
The combination of unique animation and music from this film makes me feel like I'm dreaming. I absolutely love this film. This is one of those movies that I wish it didn't have an ending so I could watch it forever and be in a happy place.

@jimk140 I'm fairly certian I know Kell's isn't in America. Don't make broad assumptions based on a few individuals. I know us "Yanks" are at times ignorant and infuriating, but that is less than half of the population.
I almost wish this film explored the whole aspect of how bringing "light to the darkness" meant bringing doing away with paganism, and how the main character's relationship with the forest spirit would have changed once he realized this. Then again, that might have shattered the feeling of childlike innocence the whole piece seemed to be centered around, which would have been pretty awful. Incredible film, absolutely astounding.
I was doing some research on this film (after falling in love with everything about it.) And figured out the art style, though at first seems very kid cartoony, is actually quite based off the the art style and shapes in the actual Book Of Kells. I saw pictures from the real book on the wiki. Very neat. The artwork is just breathtaking. Also, Aisling is named for a type of poetry that was supposedly inspired by a muse named Aisling. :)
i watched this at annecy animation film festival last year it was amazin so many people sat on a film watchin a movie was wonderful it was in french though but still great
this movie was stunning. when this movie was over, i was speechless. although somewhat lacking in plot (what did the book have to do with anything, anyway?) the animation was incredibly beautiful and left you amazed.
i'm going to buy this when i get the chance in case they take it off instant download on netflix. it's worth whatever it costs.

This was made by a hungarian cartoon studio ( in Kecskemét). The producer saw the hungarian folk cartoons, and thinked, that folk stile need for his cartoon ( just celtic style :))
Did anyone besides me think it was weird that a movie taking place in the 9th century in Ireland had a character who was black and had an African accent? And why the hell did they have to give him such big lips?
There was a shipload of African slaves who ended up in Ireland around this time. They were captured by the Vikings, who then stopped in Ireland and were wiped out by the Irish. There is no record of what happened to the Africans afterwards, unfortunately.
What is kind of interesting about that film is that there is no mention of Christianity, despite taking place in a monastery and centering around a bible. Europeans often seem to want the culture but not the reasons behind it...
I have a question. Yeah why did aisling shy away from brendan in the end? like she didnt appear to him in her human form anymore, except for that one moment but it was more like a vision rather than them actually interacting. Is it because when the northmen attacked brendon lost all sense of his innocence thus enabling him to see the world clearer or is it something else...?
@VioletteChevre I don't think she had to appear to him in human form. He knew it was her and he wasn't afraid. I think it would have been distasteful to show her again as a child or an adult since Aisling is a faerie and has "seen many ages."
@VioletteChevre It could be argued that Aisling is a symbol of the innocence of Ireland and Brendan was a man, not a boy anymore so he had lost that innocence friendship he had with her. Also, Aisilng is the name of a poem Genre which means "Vision Dream" so it could be that she was just in his imagination.

@jimk140 I'm fairly certian I know Kell's isn't in America. Don't make broad assumptions based on a few individuals. I know us "Yanks" are at times ignorant and infuriating, but that is less than half of the population.

I almost wish this film explored the whole aspect of how bringing "light to the darkness" meant bringing doing away with paganism, and how the main character's relationship with the forest spirit would have changed once he realized this. Then again, that might have shattered the feeling of childlike innocence the whole piece seemed to be centered around, which would have been pretty awful. Incredible film, absolutely astounding.

I was doing some research on this film (after falling in love with everything about it.) And figured out the art style, though at first seems very kid cartoony, is actually quite based off the the art style and shapes in the actual Book Of Kells. I saw pictures from the real book on the wiki. Very neat. The artwork is just breathtaking. Also, Aisling is named for a type of poetry that was supposedly inspired by a muse named Aisling. :)

this movie was stunning. when this movie was over, i was speechless. although somewhat lacking in plot (what did the book have to do with anything, anyway?) the animation was incredibly beautiful and left you amazed.
i'm going to buy this when i get the chance in case they take it off instant download on netflix. it's worth whatever it costs.

@krs2012 well it was kinda obvious since in the beginning even she said shes been there for ages its is a let down i would imagine her to be a real beauty older....but it would somewhat make her existence not that magical her not aging keeps her innocence intact which is something refreshing ;3

when i saw the trailer on demand my family said maybe tomorrow night..... a few nights later all of my family forgot about it but me... and like were like what movie should we we watch " The secret of Kells!!!!!" i blurted out there like oh ya then we watched it loved it! but one of my sisters friends said its scary wat the heck! i loved the movie but its weird that i love the scary parts not the happy parts..... tmi ^_^

This was made by a hungarian cartoon studio ( in Kecskemét). The producer saw the hungarian folk cartoons, and thinked, that folk stile need for his cartoon ( just celtic style :))

Did anyone besides me think it was weird that a movie taking place in the 9th century in Ireland had a character who was black and had an African accent? And why the hell did they have to give him such big lips?

There was a shipload of African slaves who ended up in Ireland around this time. They were captured by the Vikings, who then stopped in Ireland and were wiped out by the Irish. There is no record of what happened to the Africans afterwards, unfortunately.
What is kind of interesting about that film is that there is no mention of Christianity, despite taking place in a monastery and centering around a bible. Europeans often seem to want the culture but not the reasons behind it...

I have a question. Yeah why did aisling shy away from brendan in the end? like she didnt appear to him in her human form anymore, except for that one moment but it was more like a vision rather than them actually interacting. Is it because when the northmen attacked brendon lost all sense of his innocence thus enabling him to see the world clearer or is it something else...?

@VioletteChevre I don't think she had to appear to him in human form. He knew it was her and he wasn't afraid. I think it would have been distasteful to show her again as a child or an adult since Aisling is a faerie and has "seen many ages."

@VioletteChevre It could be argued that Aisling is a symbol of the innocence of Ireland and Brendan was a man, not a boy anymore so he had lost that innocence friendship he had with her. Also, Aisilng is the name of a poem Genre which means "Vision Dream" so it could be that she was just in his imagination.
