This song also always reminds me of Alex Campbell. T'was the one they sang when Alex introduced "three young Scottish lads" (oops, showing my age here!). If I remember correctly, they also sang it at the memorial concert for Alex in Skagen ...
I have always thought that the late great Alex Campell did the best ever version but this would be second with apologies to Ian, Dereck who I've shared a jar or two when they came down into Southern England plus Cambridge Folk Fest about 30 yrs ago. Fabulous.
This is the best version of this much covered song. It is a joyful song, men who have been long at sea going home to wives, family, safety and warmth. So many versions of this song are sung as a dirge. This version has passion, joy, hope, thankfulness, exuberance and love. Totally fab.
@Theagchm Seeing as Largs is just up the road from Irvine, I suppose you could say he is :-) I visited Irvine and Largs a number of times in my younger days, not bad for a Sassenach eh ? My favourite place was Portencross, absolutely nothing to do there but I loved the peace and quiet !
@Theagchm Seeing as Largs is just up the road, I suppose he is :-) Last time I visited Largs was 1984, while staying in Irvine. My favourite place was Portencross, absolutely nothing to do there but enjoy the peace and quiet :-)
This takes me back to my childhood and my parents - who loved folk music and spent many happy hours in the one at RAF Wildenwrath, and when the McCalmans visited RAF Gibraltar in the early 80s they stopped in for a chat, great music.
Thanks so much Davie!--You are the best- I have loved that song since i first heard it way back in the 60's Guess that dates me too! LOL! I think it was on an album by an Alisdair Ghillie or something like that? I will now add The Macs version to my collection of groups singing the MIngalay Boat song!-- Pat
