Yes, that's right. :) The direct translation of "je m'appelle" is "I call myself", and that's how we introduce ourselves in French, so "my name is" in English.

In german you would say "Ich nenne mich", if you translate it word for word...

...and I think that's a good example of why we should probably stay away from word to word translations... ;) And actually, you correct me if I'm wrong, but I think "nennen" is German for "to name", isn't it? So seeing as in English and French we use the verb "to call" with the same meaning, an even more faithful word to word translation into German would have to be "Ich rufe mich", wouldn't it? Now THAT looks awesome...

Still I think I'll just stick with "Ich heiße" for now. ;)

Hm, you're right. But I thought "Ich rufe mich" sounds too stupid. xP I never thought about the meaning of "appelle" and I always transaleted it as "Ich heiße". But the french people also say "J'ai ... ans" and word for word (I know word for word isn't good ;) ) would be "Ich habe ... Jahre".

And if I introduce myself I just say "Ich bin". ;)

Yeah, with this one it seems that germanic languages agree on the "I am" form while romance languages agree on the "I have" one. It's funny how when I stop and think about such differences I sometimes find that other languages say things better that in my own language. I do find "Ich bin 26 Jahre alt" a more logical way to say it... ;)

Yeah, "Ich bin" is more informal, like English speakers usually just say "hey, I'm..." and not "Hey, my name is..." ;)
