How did we go from the voice like this in 2009 to an unrecognizable voice that we had during the nothing but love tour. I can't understand, a voice does not deteriorate so much in the case of just over a year.

Basically everybody, Whitney can't do nothing right! If she would have went on Good Morning America and sang all her songs like she used to and then sat down to be interviewed with a real horse voice, barely capable of speaking, people would still be talking negative! Its strange....but its true....I totally agree with Topher286 .....i just can't understand too..i've watched all the vids from her concert in Russia and German in Dez 2009...she sounds much better here and tha was in Feb 2009... but I've already bought my VIP ticket to her concert in Feb-2010 in Tokyo.... but i don't care about her voice...its great to have her again...she is a Phoenix!

@Topher286 I think because on her tour, she was performing too much. I mean she was doing 3 or 4 shows at week. With her recovering, she should've done at most 2 shows a week. Like one at the beginning of the week, and one towards the end. That would've given her voice time to rest and strengthen back up. Here, she had had plenty of rest. This was her first live performance since the Live and Loud 2007.

I agree, she does sound better here than on her album, and it's definitely because she'd recorded most of the material already. Strangely, though, I know for a fact she recorded "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" after this, and her voice on that record sounds quite hoarse to me. Anyway, she's a great artist, and it's good to see her back.

As a vocalist myself, I do know that it takes time for chords to heal from any form of abuse/damages. Also keep in mind, aging could also be a factor in changing one's vocals.
There is so much negative press about people of color. What does it profit us to promote its venomous poison? It took incredible strength and courage to do what Whitney is attempting to do. I applaud the effort. She does not sound like she did in 2001 but unless you are Patti Labelle or Gladys Knight who does? She does sound very good here. Whitney rises once again out of the ashes. She explained that she talked to Oprah for 3 hours straight, and Clive Davis said she also did two music videos, she's almost 50, people, I could tell her voice was strained the minute she opened her voice on the GMA live perf. I think the CD is great, I really like the entire CD, the songs are different and it's a very current musical CD, with some old school flavor. I missed her, and I am not disappointed with her CD. Listen to the entire CD with an objective ear, you will agree.
Wake up people. I love her more than anybody, but she's gonna go down in flames unless she starts doing material that suits her damaged voice. Stop trying to belt it out and just sing softly. She sounds terrible here and sounded worse on GMA. I'm really sad over this.
I have to agree. This is the result of a low voice spending too much time at the high end of her vocal range without the technique to support that kind of stress. At 46 she should be at the top of her game but we don't hear it in this performance. I still think she has a great colour in her voice but she needs to start putting everything lower and I would love to hear her sing Blues a-la Nina Simone. She would kill it!!

It's incredibly hard to come back from everything she's put herself through. Good for her for trying to put herself back together again. But let's admit the voice isn't there--at least not for the music she used to sing. If she shifts gears a little bit, she still has the artistry to work it into something else. I mean, geez, she can still sing better than Madonna (whose music I'll always prefer to Whitney's but whose talent is not based on vocal strength, let's face it).
This video pretty much shows that the woman STILL has it. She is still a musical phenom, that will never be matched. As I said before, Whitney is like the female counter part to Michael Jackson.
This was a very good performance she tore the house down w/ its not right.... Whitney still got it. I'm buyin' her new album listen 2 it on her website it is great. I luv every song. Sounds contemporary but she still maintain herself. She deseves this I feel very happy 4 her. All she got is positive around her now. I goin' 2 definitely support her more than ever know. She deserves it she has worked her ass off.

You guys have to remember Whitney probably had a vocal surgery so she has to be much easier on her cords and let her voice build gradually. Trust and believe year after year you will dramatic vocal improvement. She definitely had the surgery I can tell!
she does sound much better, no more "fast singing" or heay breathing in between notes, her tone and timbre are back, now she is probably working on the falestto and power notes of her voice
not only is whitneys album gonna be released on sept 1st but it is titled I Look To You.(which is also a song r. ke;;y wrote for her back in 2008,and will alson be included on the album)
She is back!!! This isn't quite Bodyguard Whitney but definitely stronger then the early and mid 2000's. Plus, that instrument is resilient and it will continue to get stronger!! She took a number of vocal liberties in It's Alright/Okay and I truly believe that confidence in the voice is just an important!

Patti used to be able to hold a note for like a minute and walk away form the mic, she rarely does it now. somethings u cant fight and aging is one of them.

I have to disagree with one thing. Patti still has it. I heard her live this year, and it was amazing. There is no strain in her voice in any octave and she had complete control without holding back. Patti should patent whatever she has done with her voice and sell it these other singers.

I agree, she does sound better here than on her album, and it's definitely because she'd recorded most of the material already. Strangely, though, I know for a fact she recorded "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" after this, and her voice on that record sounds quite hoarse to me. Anyway, she's a great artist, and it's good to see her back.

As a vocalist myself, I do know that it takes time for chords to heal from any form of abuse/damages. Also keep in mind, aging could also be a factor in changing one's vocals.

There is so much negative press about people of color. What does it profit us to promote its venomous poison? It took incredible strength and courage to do what Whitney is attempting to do. I applaud the effort. She does not sound like she did in 2001 but unless you are Patti Labelle or Gladys Knight who does? She does sound very good here. Whitney rises once again out of the ashes. She explained that she talked to Oprah for 3 hours straight, and Clive Davis said she also did two music videos, she's almost 50, people, I could tell her voice was strained the minute she opened her voice on the GMA live perf. I think the CD is great, I really like the entire CD, the songs are different and it's a very current musical CD, with some old school flavor. I missed her, and I am not disappointed with her CD. Listen to the entire CD with an objective ear, you will agree.

I have to agree. This is the result of a low voice spending too much time at the high end of her vocal range without the technique to support that kind of stress. At 46 she should be at the top of her game but we don't hear it in this performance. I still think she has a great colour in her voice but she needs to start putting everything lower and I would love to hear her sing Blues a-la Nina Simone. She would kill it!!

It's incredibly hard to come back from everything she's put herself through. Good for her for trying to put herself back together again. But let's admit the voice isn't there--at least not for the music she used to sing. If she shifts gears a little bit, she still has the artistry to work it into something else. I mean, geez, she can still sing better than Madonna (whose music I'll always prefer to Whitney's but whose talent is not based on vocal strength, let's face it).

Whitney sounds really rough here, and is doing more talking than actual singing...that being said, she has still some strong sounds coming out here and there so with more time and work with a vocal coach i am sure she can get her voice back to normal, and possibly even stronger,Whitney is clearly not Old!

No one said Whitney has seven octaves fool. She has went into seventh and sixth octave before in live performances but she does possess that range overall. In prime 4-5 octaves, now a good 3. She is back!!! This isn't quite Bodyguard Whitney but definitely stronger then the early and mid 2000's. Plus, that instrument is resilient and it will continue to get stronger!! She took a number of vocal liberties in It's Alright/Okay and I truly believe that confidence in the voice is just an important!

yep besides what we "hear" about her drugs, she her mom, and cousins all sounded way different as they got older. so Does Mariah patti and aretha. Theyve just had recent hits. But go back 35 years and listen to where they were at 20 when whitney was doing insane vocals. Your voice has a time limit and excessive use speeds it up. Patti used to be able to hold a note for like a minute and walk away form the mic, she rarely does it now. somethings u cant fight and aging is one of them.

I would have to disagree. I guess I remember Whitney's past performances too well and this can't compare. She does fine by today's standards and she has that same great tone.
