  • Just one additional thing, to actually move the body inwards is extremely wasteful of energy. You can hear how one of the chords you play this way comes out sounding rather thin- despite all the energy flying around. It's far more efficient if the torso is balanced, than if it falls inwards.

  • @cziffra1980

yes, "balance" is the whole gist of this video. Regarding "energy" - check out the flow of "ki" energy and you may understand

  • @MillerMusicStudiosTV @MillerMusicStudiosTV sure- I have no problem with the idea. I just think it's important to clarify what is real energy and what is a psychological illusion. To combine the objective laws of energy conservation with principles about spiritual 'energy' really confuses the issue. The science is being used out of context, to seemingly support something that it actually contradicts entirely.

  • I don't think the fact that energy cannot be created or destroyed should be related to energy "circulating" up from the floor. It's rather misleading to compare these two things- one of which is real and the other of which is entirely imaginary. There's nothing wrong with a metaphor- as long as it's presented as being a metaphor. Ironically, this fictional concept contradicts laws of energy conservation entirely- regardless of whether it might seem to be related on the surface.

  • @cziffra1980

Actually, it's not imaginary. If I get time I will try to explain this to you further.

  • @MillerMusicStudiosTV Energy does not flow up through the feet and energy that is put into the piano cannot be recirculated. Although the laws of energy conservation state that energy cannot be created or destroyed, once energy has gone into the piano it's gone for good (into sound and heat).

  • @MillerMusicStudiosTV You're trying to use the law of energy conservation to point to what would amounts to a "perpetual motion" mechanism- but this is exactly what that law proves to be impossible! All of the energy goes into creating sound and heat and entropy dictates that none of that can be recovered or recycled. Any impression of energy being reused in a cycle is 100% illusion. This may be a useful thing to pretend but it has nothing to do with the law of energy conservation.

  • @cziffra1980 If piano playing is perceived as effortless, it's for the simple reason that less effort is going in. There's nobody in the world who can cycle energy when playing the piano. Energy that is expended is expended and nothing in the world is going to bring in back, once it has been used on the piano.

  • A great deal of practial information, very interesting and well done, thank you!

  • @Kirtev

So nice to hear from you again! I'm glad you found this helpful and I'm happy to share with you :)

    Love,

    Di

  • Excellent tips! I completely agree that "gravity" can be your friend at the keyboard and you should use it to your advantage. Great tips on position, fingering, etc. These will allow one to SAVE their hands and enjoy the keyboard for years and years to come. Mike

  • Dear MoJoPiano/Mike,

Thanks! Did you hear my video piano playing: "Christmas Joy?" - that got a lot of sound but mostly I only had to drop onto the keys - I do use a lot of body weight too, sort of playing aggressively in that video, but when I watched it I thought of how gravity does help us get a nice, round tone :)

    HAPPY NEW YEAR'S DAY!

    Love,

    Di

  • I have never had a lesson, and this helped me a lot. Maybe I wont get so tired so easy.

    Thanks!!!!

  • Dear Nexar41834,

You will get a really nice sound from the piano as well ;)

    You are more than welcome!

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Love,

    Di

  • Dear Di, I just got a piano from my girls for x'mas. Naturally, this video is very valuable for my practice. I have uploaded a video in appreciation to yours and other nice folk's teaching on Youtube. I asked you once before what was the benefit of practicing progression. Somehow I put it to use in this vedio. Not quite proficient yet. Hope you don't mind. My heartfelt thanks to you for everything you teach. Warmest wish to you and your loved ones. Merry X'mas & HappyNew Year!!!

Yes, the injury-free part is the best part ;) Thanks for your vote of confidence!

    Love,

    Di

  • Outstanding. I always show these to my parents and they're like.....huh...how 'bout that? I never learned it. I'll show this to my teacher as well. He's in his 20's not sure he's heard a piano play itself before. :)

  • Dear blindedsun,

Thanks! I do need encouragement to keep making these videos since I work teaching private students 7 days and nights per week already and will only keep making videos if I think they are helpful to youtubers. I'm so happy that you and your parents are enjoying the info. I hope your teacher likes it too and I hope you keep in touch!

    Love,

    Di

  • Sounds like some brilliant nocturne's you wrote are going to flood the channel. Heh, just kidding, I think everyone would appreciate just one video from you (on Christmas or something), a year. Anyone?... Take care and try not to let all these thank yous encourage you! Good people die because one mosquito tells the rest where all the free blood is! Sincerely grateful.

  • Dear blindedsun,

Do you mean you want me to practice? :) and post a piano performance of my own? uh oh.....ok - I'll prepare something.....but where I'm going to find the time to practice the piano is another question altogether ;)

    Love,

    Di

  • Fail a student. ;)

    Justin

  • thanks for your educational videos.

  • Dear EliGioCic,

You are more than welcome! Thanks for watching ;)

    Love,

    Di

  • Great vid, i've only just started learning on a keyboard not a piano and my shoulders have been aching. This vid gives excellent insight, thanks!!

  • Dear yungrazar,

I'm so happy you know how to avoid aching shoulders now ;)

    Love,

    Di

  • Thank you Diana.

    Great video.

    Best wishes,

    Judyesther

  • Dear judyesther,

You are more than welcome! Thanks for your kind comment!

    Lots of love to you!

    Di

  • Wowzee!! That was great Diana! You really got deep in your explanations.I've taken and have had many piano teachers that didn't take the time to really stress what you said.

Good going, very nice!....your dress was nice too :-)

  • Dear ByrowNeius, Thanks! and though these explanations seem deep, they actually go way deeper at lectures - there are hundreds of hours of lectures given at Taubman Seminars on these types of topics. Can you imagine? I have listened and applied them over and over again - always happy with the results. Dorothy Taubman is a true genius! It's possible that your many piano teachers didn't have the opportunity to be exposed to this info. So glad you liked my polka-dots too ;) Love, Di

  • Your Welcome Di! Thanks for taking the time to respond back.

Be well my friend!! God Bless you and yours!

  • Great lesson. I bookmarked this page and look forward to reviewing it again and sharing the information with all my piano students.

  • Dear hiddentalent123, Thanks for your kind comment! I'm so happy that you bookmarked this page & that you will share this info with your students! It's wonderful that you are teaching piano, because as a concert artist once told me - if we who know how to play the piano well do not pass the baton (so to speak) to the next generation the true art of piano playing can be lost. Students need the one on one contact and caring instruction in order to learn well! Keep up the fine work! Love, Di

  • wow i didn't that.

    thanks for the info!!

  • Dear vanessacherrelle,

You are so welcome! I'm so happy you enjoyed the info!

    Love,

    Di

  • Kooo! Thanks for this video and information. Enjoyed it very much :)!

I will show this to my cousins.

Yea I've heard of that work out thing he did. Rings with strings attached to weights.

Seen a video of some Japanese pianists on some drama trying to play piano with those attached to their fingers. It was a funny show.

The energy rotation thing is heavy-deep stuff.

    But I like it.

Thanks for sharing this with the world Diane. <3

  • Dear ChrisWatch,

You are more than welcome, friend! I'm so happy you enjoyed this video! I hope you will let me know if your cousins like the video when you share it with them ;) If only Robert Schumann had learned this stuff before he hurt himself, right?! Yikes!

    Love,

    Di

  • I guess so you can add more feeling and emotion I guess like how you change the attack when you play guitar . thanks for the lesson. mike
