Wow, I grew up in the 80's and remember this song. Had totally forgotten about it till I heard it on the radio the other day so I looked it up. Funny, I never saw him as "handsome" back then but I definitely see it now. I also never realized back then how some times his voice sounds a little like Robert Palmer's and his facial expressions, especially in the beginning (0:25-0:50ish) when he looks down contemplatively and then up again while singing are very much the way Palmer sang.
Great video and awesome song.. The quality of the video was perfect for me i like my 80s videos with a hit of vhs quality to them.. gives the video more of that watching in the 80s feelings.
I really liked Paul Young, but as a vocalist myself, I was always a little concerned about that slight "choked" sound. Not sure if he just used it as an effect or if it was his technique. Is he still performing?
I was fortunate enough to be able to see Paul in concert when I was fifteen. My father was a DJ and brought me to see him. It was a great show and a great memory made for my father and me. Even though Paul was older than my father I still thought he was handsome and a great performer. I am sorry for his early passing. RIP Paul.
the best video version for this song. period. it captures the mood and aura of this timeless classic. what an emotional song by PY. you can sense the passion and pain in his voice, the seaside wind and location is simply perfect. this is what a power ballad should sound and look like folks! the mighty 80's gone but it will never be forgotton....
thanks for sharing this video agreed with all you stated in description..he is an awesome entertainer so much talent live shows are amazing check his live shows from the 80s pure showmanship <3 me some Paul and yes would have loved to gear his children sorry wayne lol.........
This song reminds me of a long lost love, from 1990, who she herself, reminded me of the 80's since she had a lot of cool early 80's mixtapes and she was the same age I was, growing up thru the 80's as a teen. Anyone I meet these days doesn't seem to compare to her, and this tears away at me, now I know what old people feel when they remember the events and music of their youth. We are becoming those old people now, slowly. We never thought it would ever happen. I want to go back.
@GrailcodeDotNet thank you for your words, I myself can relate to your words, I didn't grow up through the 80's, I was only a baby when this song came out , but I remember my sister listening to it, she died at a very young age, but your words summarized it all, we all have some one we yearn for, and this song really hits the heart, and you are so right we all seem to understand older people more and more as time demolishes us
Thank god someone posted this version of the video. It is the one I remember from my childhood and have only seen the version where he and his girlfriend are breaking up and she is dancing etc. etc.....thanks for posting. It reminds me of better days when my life wasn't what seems to be one disapointing bummer after another.
I was a teen in the 80's and I always loved this song, but I never really paid much attention to what he looked like. I didn't know what I was missing. He kind of reminds me of Johnny Depp.
I've never seen this version of the song before, thanks for sharing. It looks like it was shot at Gunwalloe Church Cove in Cornwall (I know it well). Loved Paul Young in the 80s, seeing him in concert was quite the thrill for a 17 year old :-)
@Babyhowdy233 Do you think after filming the second version and the record company said to make a third. I could see him throwing his hands up in the air being being like...come on guys....really?
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
This is the only version of the video I saw on American MTV (I realize there was at least one other). The wailing woman in the veil is both incredibly silly and extraordinarily haunting all at once (burned into my brain), which I think sums up the wonder of the 1980s. :-)
I dedicate this to my mother Willie Pearl Jones. We had so much fun when this came out.Mom...please come back and stay for good this time.I Love You,Daniel
Wow, remember this song as a very impressionable 18 year old at the time. Now that I am 46 with a lot of years under the bridge is is even more poignant. Amazing that Mike and the Mechanics had 2 such incredible vocalists as Paul Young and Paul Carrack.
This song I will always love listening to. When it came out, it kind of marked the beginning of my infatuation with those cute English pop musicians. Ahhhh, the 80's, I miss your music!
I remember this video as being more colorful and him standing on the edge of a cliff. Is there another one? God, it's gorgeous in any case. The female vocal is amazing too. I'm so in awe that I found it after all these years. Thank you, GL
@lurch321 It was de rigueur for the day when this came out to have more than one video for a song. I recall that Yes had 8 versions of a hit song they had out at one time. As for this video, it's my favorite one for this song since it's the most haunting.
It was this video that made me fall in love with Paul Young. I must have been 11 or 12 at the time. This was pre Johnny Depp... Actually, he may be the reason I went ape for Johnny, Johnny reminded me of a younger Paul. lol This has remained one of my all time favorite songs to this day. Thank you so much for posting this video.
this song reminds me of my highschool sweetheart, after we broke up my mom said to me 'if you love someone set them free, if they dont come back set them on fire
@CollectorOfMusic I went through the same thing. She dump me, leaving me brokenheart for many years. I saw her many years later, she was pregmnant, had a three year old daughter, and a bad marriage! Her stepfather tought I wasn't good enough for her. I am glad he thought that way, I am better off with my lovely wife of 22 years. Thenk you God!
these days singers yell and scream alot of gibberish nobody can understand. its nice to go back and hear somebody who can really sing for a change. it would be great if the kids singing now would listen to paul and learn something!
I had a HUGE Paul Young poster behind my bedroom door. I had a big crush on him back in the day. My Grandma visited one time and used my room to stay in and it scared the wits outta her haha. But afterward she said "what a NICE LOOKING young fellow". Good eye Grandma!. Paul was YUMMY with a spoon back then!
this is the song I considered this to be Paul Young's "breakthrough" song in the United States...even though it peaked at #22 on the Hot 100 chart in April of 1984 it was still (to me) one of the most memorable songs of 1984 and much congrats to Paul for going all the way to #1 in the summer of 85 with "Everytime You Go Away"

@mollygirlmn You're right, I remember when this video was first shown on Friday Night Videos. It was released as a no glasses needed 3D video. I did look pretty cool. Better on TV
the 50's i heard were great, music i mean....the 60's were amazing musically......the 70's speak volumes about the amazing talent in the music industry then.....but the 80"s.....what is it that made this decade the most incredible, the most vibrant exqusite music of all...simply an amazing time for music and the people who were young then
I grew up with lately 80's music...whole 80s were awesome and astounding for me. It's been remarkable times, btw.. but paradoxically always loved songs released in 1st half of this great decade. I think that today's stuff is often not to compare with those years..music has become more artificial and commercialized now.Sometimes I wish I lived in 80s again
I wish guys nowadays looked like Paul Young and the lovely Ben from The Cars, or Richard from Mr Mister.....they had such a great style which the guys today do not have....it's all about being ''hard'' these days......
this song is far better than the other one where he is in the flat.....it's more haunting and that girl looks scarey in that veil!! what a song....!!!!!
GeneralLee1956 states that this was ripped from a tape. IIRC, this was just as grainy when it was shown on MTV. I think that is how it was made to look.
Definitely a great tune. Paul always had a very distinct voice and seemed to sing with such passion. One of my favorite tunes of the 80's. Long live the 80's...

Yes, one of my favorite songs from the 80's. The female backing vocals remind of a different song from the 70's.. One i can't recall right now..

GeneralLee1956 states that this was ripped from a tape. IIRC, this was just as grainy when it was shown on MTV. I think that is how it was made to look.

@wildturkey1960,
I was curious about that. Thanks.
As an aside, what does IIRC mean? Haven't been able to appreciate abbreviations...

Definitely a great tune. Paul always had a very distinct voice and seemed to sing with such passion. One of my favorite tunes of the 80's. Long live the 80's...

It's nice to grow up in a pop culture that had these songs. I wonder what memories would bring the songs of late.
