I'm a great fan of Chuck Willis, and have almost worn out my copy of Let's Jump Tonight. One song that really grew on me was "Whatcha Gonna Do When Your Baby Leaves You". Now I knew ang liked the song since I was a child and heard it on radio, but it grew to be one of my favorites by Chuck.
Oh, I like all the rest too but this one has been growing on me for over 50 years.
Must edit my comment. If we have nothing left in the good old USA we still have our langage. Protect it. Going away baby, oh YEAH. Corrected. C.C. Rider, arguably the best rock/roll song ever. Chuck Willis, unappreciated and not given his due as an artist.RIP Chuck Willis and pass the "Orange Driver", Detroit style.
Great beer joint music. Spent hours in bjs when I was a toddler. Used to play this song on the juke as the patrons would give me nickels tp play any music. Knew this button by hesrt.
...glad to see there's lots of cool people out there listening to this timeless stuff. The chorus on the outro: "CC Rider, C Rider, CC Rider, C Rider... doesn't get much smoother than that.
I'm glad to see that someone else mentioned "the stroll". I can't hear this song and not think of when that was the "cool" thing to do at dances, especially to this song. I mean, it's "made" for the stroll. Also, it's one damn good tune, too. So, all you old farts, like me, get up and see if you can still do it. Ole Chuck Willis died too soon. RIP
@fqexpat hahaha I love your comment....just the beat alone spells out The Stroll huh? Love it!!!! You're no old fart if you can still do this. lol I didn't know when he passed...Have a great week ahead and keep leaving comments that make this woman "giggle" xo
Can someone please upload some video of Chuck Willis or Little Willie John performing on Bandstand or some other shows of the period. There's got to be footage out there somewhere on these two legends.
My Mother (GOD BLESS HER SOUL) put me up on all this kind of music when i was a very young man.even though all of this music is far pass my time i am now stuck on them all and loving every moment of it..
What a great old tune. Yes Chuck was very talented. I had this 45 when I was young. Inherited it from my Dad who was a teen in the 50's. I played it on my first record player. Played it to death in fact. I love it ! I love it !!
The guy with the turban, the late great Chuck Willis this along with Gonna hang up my rock and roll shoes are two of Atlantics best from the mid 1950,s
This was the first version of this song I ever heard. Later I learned that it was a very old blues song played, changed, and at time recorded by many. Reading people arguing it being an Elvis tune is crazy. He covered it, like Chuck Willis did and many others. I like this one the best. It is so smooth.
how dare u talk about black ppl like that chuck willis made this song in 1961 and elvis made his 1972 so that shows that elvis is not the original so get ur facts right
@MrJberkin Oh I get it, it is okay to be a white racist and make white racist comments, but it offends your tender ears to see cursing. You are a hypocrite.
@GGindahouse11Hey asshole I am a man. Go fuck yourself, you are another racist piece of shit trying to talk like a Jamaican. Sorry fool, I have Jamaican friends your post is pure shit. You are damn piece of white racist, redneck trash. Get back into your fucking trailer shitface. I will say it again, Elvis liked to sing back other folks songs, that is all he is capable off. Fuck you man.
@LES6723: Mr.Bubetube said " this is an Elvis song, not a fucking nigger song. Elvis made MILLIONS off this song!" GGindhouse 11 said this "you shut up dont carry on reading this message if u dont understand jamaican shut ur bomboclart rasclart pussyhole clart u fucking asshole." You could not confront neither of these two racists SOBs but because you share their opinions, you have the nerve to tell me about my intelligence when I take care of them? You can think what the hell you want.
@Jevezy Funny you should say that about Elvis, because this guy singing here didn't write this song, an earlier black musician wrote it. So he's going some other folk's song. Like many black musicians did at the time and still do. Nothing wrong with singing other people's songs. Especially if you can sing them better, like Elvis did.
@shemseven I have no problem with Chuck Willis singing a song that another man wrote. Most singers do. What I have a problem with is Elvis' famous reputation for singing other folks songs that were already recorded - both black and white folks. Elvis was talented but not that talented. That is something no one can run away from, and quicker folks stop denying it the better it will be.
I remember in 1987 driving on a long trip with my dad in a Pontiac Fiero. This song came on the radio, probably first time he had heard it since the fifities. I saw this look come over him and a smile appear on his face as he was flashed back to a particular moment from his teens. I seem to recall him mentioning a girl he was in love with back then. That day driving was relaxed, warm, it was summer and all was good with the world.
@19doconnor This is a turban, not a doo-rag, Willis wore it because he suffered hair loss at an early age. Entertainers would not have performed or posed for formal photos while wearing a doo-rag.
@MAGICO240 No,this is REAL R&B,(not "Blues")unlike the junk that's called R&B today but is just ordinary soul music.Chuck Willis was from Atlanta,Ga. where I lived most of the first five years of my life.
I just discovered that Chuck Willis died in 1958 at the age of 30. I graduated from high school in 1965 and can remember dancing to this recording at sock hops.
@sexyladybrownsuga - my daddy loved this song. I remember putting the 45 rpm record on the record player for him on quite a few occasions back in 1961-64 in New Orleans.
