It's Ian, Mitchell's dad. Runway 31 at LaGuardia is notoriously short. The pilots can't bring the throttle to idle position for typical touchdown at 150 to 160 knots. I'm not a licensed pilot, but as far as I know, you have to have enough thrust, especially with a big heavy plane, so that you can lift up in an emergency situation. I think there was a US Air aborted landing in the 80s when the plane ended up in the water in Jamaica bay because there wasn't enough speed to lift off. Cheers :)
This is a real cockpit video of a landing at the old Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong, perhaps among the world's most dangerous landings. They got rid of it for good reason, and it scared me beyond belief when I was a kid.

@iyeoh1 Typical touchdown speeds for MD's and the smaller airliners that land in LaGuardia would be less than 150 to 160kts. Enough thrust to get a MD or 737 back in the air in the event of an emergency would be too much to land the aircraft. Extra thrust is not used on landing incase of an emergency because the engines can be spooled up quickly. What you will find is that the piots do not attempt much of a flare, as those waste runway at a rate of more or less 200ft per sec.
The plane MD-80 alwasy skids does that funny thing that's the plane's nature

I found out that KLGA 13-31 is only 7003 feet. I guess its ok if you're in a F16 with afterburners :)

Look at what crosswinds can do a plane landing on a short runway.
In the Youtube search bar, type in "Lufthansa: Strong wind. Very dangerous landing!!!"
