  • Biggest health myth? Hard to say. High cholesterol and high fiber diet. Low cholesterol doesn't reduce risk of heart disease. High fiber diet is over blown.

  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

  • biggest health myth is SATURATED FAT! Its not bad ya'll!

  • I second the agave nectar thing in terms of myth...

As for my question: I'd love to hear your take on the new research that is coming out (usually in conjunction with issues around weight loss) that states not all calories are born equal/calories from different food sources have different/unique effects on the body.

  • agave nectar

  • i have 1 gallstone it is 1cm in size, what can i do for omega 3's and calcium..is there a chinese medicine i can use to make it disolve..other than the lemon detox or olive oil..so far that's all i have looked into..if you have more info on that i would be greatful with some help...ty allison..

  • Wow! I like your little site, I am always searching for health info.

If you may, please research what I consider one of the biggest myths of all: that the best source of (assimilable) calcium is milk and milk products. It seems to me that nobody talks about the fact that, if you put no stress on your bones, that calcium won't really assimilate, or that pasteurization destroys other nutrients that make calcium more available. Thank you!

  • Ooooh... fluoride is a good one! I'm on it :-) Thanks guys!

  • this guy is right...its about facts and logic not gettin hot headed over it..however passion is required in order to activly persue our goal on freedom of health and freedom of our own choices... but saying ur mad dosnt help unless u have facts to back it up.. the main fact is that our rights as humans are once again being taken away..whats it going to take to regain our freedom and our voice

  • This is similar to the one below, but with a twist~ The biggest HEALTH myth, in my opinion, is not that we Humans need meat, but that DOGS need meat. ??? I've done a lot of my own research on this subject, and my dog is now a vegetarian. He is doing well (in good health and far better than when I first adopted),but I still get horrible reactions and even outright verbal attacks from people...

I would be interested in what you come up with.

  • I'm not entirely sure what the research says, but I'd be curious to know what sort of response you got from a licensed veterinarian or zoologist. Did you consult any dog experts before changing his diet?

Plus, even if it's perfectly safe, what's the point in making your dog a vegetarian? Why not just let it eat how it normally would, or at least choose for itself between the two kibbles?

  • I found out that, as long as a dog has L- carnitine and Taurine in it's diet, it will be fine. This is available in a vegetarian diet. My vet is fine with it. I've seen hundreds of dogs that developed food allergies from their diets. As far as letting my dog "eat how it normally would"? Many dogs like grapes (linked to renal failure). They also like anti-freeze, but they will die. Or wild animals (disease and parasites).

Would you let your child decide between a healthy meal and a "Happy Meal"?

  • (I really meant for my post to be sincere and not defensive, but I had to condense it because of "character count" restrictions).

  • Just to clarify, when I said to let your dog choose it's diet, I didn't mean just let him eat anything. I get that. I just raised an eyebrow when you mentioned giving a vegetarian diet to a dog was because dogs evolved in the wild to be carnivorous. You mentioned those amino acids that dogs require. That's a good point, but does that mean that dogs aren't actually true carnivores? Everything I've looked up so far indicates that they are meant to consume meat. I just find that a bit confusing.

  • The promotion by food companies that their products are healthy just because some of the wording on the packages are labeled as such. How healthy really are whole grain pop tarts? Just a puzzle to me that this is allowed so much and the really healthy stuff is bashed and being legislated on.-Laura

  • Biggest food myth... umm, that you need animal protein in order to build muscle

  • Indeed, I second mrjimmypayjo's reply. I was able to gain over 30 lbs of lean weight without animal protein.

  • With just the exception of... oh.. all the scientific evidence to the contrary from multiple lines of evidence, evolutionary biology and a few other fields of science you obviously don't give a whack about. This is a public health issue and C-51 is pro-public health and you're being led or lying!!

  • @mrjimmypayjo Absolutely true , you don't need beef to build muscle . There are so many top MMA fighters that are vegans now . Many athletes find strength gains are easier eating a vegan diet because they aren't eating any wasted calories .

  • What's sad is that this was one of the only bills where the second hearing was actually rushed. It has already passed 2... one more and it becomes a law :(

There's rumors that our nice minister of health, Tony Clement, actually invested money into the pharmaceutical industry so he'll be getting his share by eliminating competition (natural health products)...

  • who are essentially the little guy in our sea of monstrous corporations, and cannot afford the further testing required. Therefore, it's estimated that 70% of the products will be pulled off the market and the ones that remain, in order to obtain, you will need a prescription from a medical doctor (not homeopath, herbalist or naturopath) and pay a price about 3 times higher. Canadians, send letters to your MP PLEASE!

  • I agree, let's talk about fluoride.
