so ppl paint their dogs toenails..is that creul? snake breeders sometimes take a silver paint marker to mark a spot on a snake to be able to tell what is what easier...ex. male and female ball python babies..male gets a dot.or other way around..they skin sheds and after a few sheds the mark is gone..what harm is done..same with turtle shells..so why worry?

You're right, there was no Chinese character on this one's shell, it's just red paint. But several other turtles we found had words written on them.

And Silverdyne, as some of you might know, needs a prescription from a vet, and vets are not free. That this turtle, and others that we have rescued, is alive and healthy today, is due ONLY to the care, trouble, and expense we have invested in them.

Many of the turtles have had their shells painted with Chinese characters in oil or spirit-based paint by Buddhists, one had the Chinese character for Buddhism carved into his shell. The turtle in this film was painted with oil or spirit-based paint which would have eventuall caused a very bad case of shellrot. Removing this paint took quite a lot of effort and some expense, as the only thing that seemed to remove it was Silverdyne.

Some of you people do not know what you are looking at so I, CharmeC's boyfriend, will explain, patiently, that all of our turtles were rescued from the East River, where they can not survive for more than 4 days. We have spent significant sums of money and taken much trouble to care for the turtles we have rescued, almost all of which have been either dangerously undernourished, suffering with shellrot, eggbound, or all three.
