  • Ozfest is the house that Randy built

  • It would have been my first show. Hats off to Torme, he didn't even want to play that strat ozzy bought him. He was using randys pedal board too. He saidnit kept giving him trouble nd he felt bad using it. Fucking Irish axe slingers rule.

  • Ireland produces some great guitar players, Gallagher, Moore, Bell.. Torme and Campbell.

  • I saw Bernie with Gillan AND Ozzy. (have GREAT pics from both shows) Bernie is the best. Listen to "Lightning strikes", off live album. Case closed

  • WOW he only had 4 days?!?! i commend bernie as he sounds like he had more time. sounds great for sure.

  • Can't ever say anything bad about Bernie...I was at the MSG show in '82 and everyone was in total shock over Randy's death. Bernie had no time to learn the material.

People cheered and clapped but it was sort of to pay tribute to Randy...kind of a "show must go on" thing. I wish that Bernie would had stayed as even tho' they played different styles,Bernie had his moments (check out his playing on Wild West...)

  • Bernie Torme did 6 shows with ozzy. my dad saw two of them. considering all that had happened and what everyone was feeling, he thinks bernie did a great job, and started listening to Gillan and the Electric Gypsies (Bernies band). The guy is a very talented musician and was the only one willing to step into Randy's shoes.

  • For all the guys that have not being around rock that long. Bernie created a sound very similar than the sound that Randy got on Blizzard of Oz and they both appeared for the first time in 1980, only that Bernie played with a thousand times better singer than Ozzy, Ian Gillan. They were very good players, one died and the other was not up to the level of commitment. What I'm saying is that Rany was exceptional but Bernie was too.

  • I like bernie torme ....but why wouldnt you get uli jon roth ? ...cant think of anyone hotter at the time { schenker too busy }

  • Question, did Bernie leave and Brad take his place or was he booted? I know Ozzy asked Brad to record with him after the Speak of the Devil tour. I dont know if Bernie simply left because he didnt want to gid or Ozzy asked him to leave. It sounds like Bernie was an excellent guitarist.

  • @Azotronia no brad asked after the tour was finnised if ozzy wanted him to stay and ozzy said -go and do your own thing

  • @Azotronia Bernie didn't really want the gig,but did it to help out the Ozzy camp cause he was planning on releasing a album at the time, but put it on hold to help fill in after Randy's death. He said he really didn't want to be there, but did it out of respect for Randy. Brad was brought in cause they knew Bernie wasn't planning on staying for the whole tour. Read all about it in "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath: The Battle for Black Sabbath" by Garry Sharpe-Young.

  • no vid of this, huh? :(

  • Bernie had to learn 14 songs in 4 days. 14 songs that he never heard of before he joined the band. Then had to play them in front of a crowd that was still in shock, with a band that was still mourning. I would say he did a great job considering all the circumstances.

  • It's abundantly clear that Bernie Torme didn't have the proper time to learn Randy's material. That being said, some of the solos he plays are just pointless and offkey.

  • GOOD GOD I was at this show..right after Randy Died... wow

  • I wish neither Brad or Bernie were on Speak of The Devil. Would've been pretty cool with Jake E Lee...

  • Ozzy recruited Uriah heep Rainbow Gillan members, a new guitar player and he had succes thanks their songwraiting and musicianship...Bernie was a great wonderful guitarplayer too...

  • brad gillis met ozzy after this show at the hotel oz stayed at. he and ozzy went up to ozzy's room and played this song unplugged. oz gave him the job on the spot.

  • you guys are going to hate bernie torme once the irish police shpw sharon called him before march 19th

  • funny that rudy's brother was okayed by ozzy and sharon to replace randy, and then the record company sends berne, why the heck would a record company decide who is going to be in the band,

  • @vanhalen515084 Happens all the time.

  • bernie is a nice guy he triedcb to help didn't do his career any good but love the guy for stepping in and going when he knew it was not right........most of ozzy guitarists have bee chancers..................

  • I was here this night-I was so looking forward to seeing Randy-God rest his soul

  • @warlockking83 but did you even know who Bernie was???? Seeing him there was likely nothing, listen to the Gillan 'Glory Road' album and you will see why he was chosen!

  • Yeah,If Randy was a close friend like they say he was they should have. But you know it's all business to Sharon.Even today with the butchering of Blizzard and Diary with the awkward and clumsy drum and bass fills from strangers that didn't even know Randy. Its very upsetting to a legit Randy Rhoads fan.

  • So right. Despite the fact she may have kept Ozzy from killing himself and turned him into a profitable attraction, Sharon is the worst thing that has happened to his career... from a music perspective. Just ask Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake, Jake e Lee and Phil Sousan. They could form a conga line out of the past musicians she put the screws to. Even those like Bruce Dickenson who simply toured with Ozzfest know what a heartless corporate bitch she is.

  • Q: Why didn't they cancel the tour in respect for Randy Rhoads? A: Sharon Osbourne.

  • Pretty decent! COnsidering that the had only two weeks to step in the shoes of the most brilliant guitarist of that time, it's amazing.

  • I know it's off the subject, but I always thought Jake E. Lee was underrated, not so much with Ozzy (he got recognition with Ozz) but when he played with Badlands, great band, great singer also with Ray Gillen

But Randy will always be metals favorite son!!

    Cheers from Texas!

  • Randy's God, but Bernie is a brilliant axeman. IMHO better thar Gillis

  • AND Gillan Future Shock is one of the all time great overlooked albums... Bernie's whammy abuse is such fun.

  • And Brad Gillis or Bernie Torme'? Bernie in a heartbeat.

  • Considering the terrible situation and pressure... Bernie Torme did a great job!!! Talk about a tough spot! I won't even make any comments on Bernie's playing - I just don't think it's right. Bless RR

  • Eeh...I think this is definitely NOT one of ozzys best concerts.

  • Bernie is a great musician.

  • From Ozzys brand new autobio (Page 245); "Bernie was in an impossible situation trying to take Randy's place but he couldn't have been more helpful. Having been thrown in at the deep end he did an incredible job for a few nights before leaving to record with his own band."

  • Hearing Bernie Torme destroy the solo in this song makes me sick to my stomach. There was never at any time nor has there been anyone who can replace what Randy was to Ozzys music, his fans or guitarists in general. He was unique. There are some people in this world whos talents go far beyond the norm and cannot be replaced.Randy Rhoads was such a gifted individual. RIP Randy we all miss you!

  • Apparently Ozzy had to get back out on the Road as quick as possible, so Torme didn't have much time to get fully comfortable with the Music, and as he says in his Site, he is not an imitator, and didn't feel he was right for the part (though he was very honoured to be asked to help out) and he recommended Brad Gillis who subsequently took over, so it all worked out in the end. Bare in mind that it wasn't just Torme who had a hard time, the whole band did, as they only just lost Rhoads.

  • Spare a thought for poor Bernie. He was the only guy Ozzy approached who actually had the balls to step in and help at very short notice. I agree that Randy was irreplacable but at least Bernie Torme had the guts to help Ozzy out during what must have been a terrible time.

  • Actually, Bernie was hired by Don Arden, while Ozzy was busy holding auditions. Rudy's brother was going to get the gig, but they had no choice but to take bernie.

  • and alcohol so much that those years were a painful blank. He was on tour with Motley Crue doing horrible things to himself. He once snorted up live Ants....Randy's death to this day still effects Ozzy....as does the suicide of my best friend... when it happens to you, only then can you truely understand Ozzy's loss.

  • I understand where everyone is coming from on this. I would like to point out that in any interview I have seen or read with Ozzy, he never mentions his time with Jake E. Lee at all. In fact, Ozzy outed Jake without Jake knowing it. He found out from his guitar tech that he was out, how screwed up is that? He said he and Ozzy lived in the same house for a while, I think during the Ultimate sin recordings, and the never spoke. I think Ozzy was trying to kill himself, or overly medicate, with drug

  • Well since Randy Rhodes death no REAL comment has been made about Bernie Torme only a guitar slinger known as Brad Gillis and so forth

But in all Bernie was aked to join the Blizzard of Ozz before Randy Bernie declined OZZYs offer and hence Randy Rhodes and hence who becomes the replace ment in all of he greater orb BRAD GILLIS !! OZZY snubbed Bernie thx for makin my cash since asshole died .. But who finished Ozzys East Coast Tour - BERNIE TORME !! not Brad Gillis

  • BTW Randy Stole BERNIES Thunder as a Guitar God listen to Bernies solo eps from 1976- 78 Way before Blizzard & Ozzy seen light of Day

  • The comment I heard about Bernie Torme was that he was great in clubs, but when playing infront of 5,000 people he would freeze up with stage fright. Now I am not sure if this is true. I spoke with him on myspace and he said that he had his thing going and helped Ozzy out but wanted to pursue his own stuff. Just like Brad Gillis did dates, did the Speak of the devil album and left Ozzy because his band, Night Ranger had scored a record deal. Brad would have been Ozzy's next guitarist.

  • I read recently in a Guitar World interview with Bernie that he was using RR's pedal board during his live dates and thought it was "haunted" as effects would often go on and off without reason.

  • Thank you for this. This is the first audio I have heard with Bernie Torme.

  • Torme did a fine job, i think he messed up the second part of the tapping solo but it doesnt really matter

  • He probably wanted to cut down on production costs, and maybe because it was a concept created at the beginning of his solo career with Randy Rhoads.I wish he would bring that set back with a guitar player that would be creative and mind-blowing like Randy,Brad were.

  • Bernie did a pretty god job pulling off RR. Btw, with Zakk officially out of the picture now, maybe that will happen.

  • @SmittyHeWasNumber1 Bernie is better than Brad any day, I've met Brad and he totally agrees.

  • @SmittyHeWasNumber1 sharon didnt want to pay royalties to bob and lee. cause bob and lee were taking them to court n 02 and the same yr. those 2 new cd's came out.

  • I'm "in the dark" as to why Ozzy didn't continue using the "castle stage set" throughout the 80's.

  • I always wondered that too. Was that NOT the best stage??

  • He didn't stay because Ozzy doesn't like Fender fiddlers...

  • Jake E lee used a strat, idk if it was a fender though

  • That's correct. Jake E Lee used a hard tail Fender Strat but Ultimate Sin isn't even in Ozzy's back catalogue anymore. Brad Gillis also used a Strat and had to go.

  • jake was playing charvels..before the headstock lawsuits..

  • Jake E Lee used Charvel guitars

  • oh, its still technically a strat though, since charvel originally began by taking fender strats and hotrodding them and eventually began making their own hotrodded strats

  • No, he used Charvel guitars...so did Vai back then. Charvels are great guitars.

  • Joe Holmes, who took over from Zakk in he mid 90's, played Strats and Ozzy had no problem with it.

  • True, but he never got to make a studio album with Ozzy. Speaking of Joe Holmes - where is he now?

  • Thats right, I often thought I wish it had been Torme on 'Speak Of The Devil' instead of Gillis. Torme is from Ireland, like me, so it would have been cool if he'd been on it. I've no idea where Joe Holmes is now. He seems to have disappeared. My guess is he may just be keeping low and playing locally, maybe he got tired of the hectic touring and the lifetyle etc.

  • Bernie Torme is class.

  • ouch.

    poor fella

I didnt mind him taking liberty with the solo and on such short notice but he didnt even attempt the descending taps in key.

    unfortunate

  • actually he was in key. the only thing was that he played the second part of the taps differently.

  • Considering he had less than a few days to learn the stuff and he had NEVER heard any of Randy's stuff before I think he did good.

Balls of Steel indeed to step up to the job.

  • Respect for stepping up to the mark. Why didn't he stay?

  • He was working on a solo album and had only committed to a certain number of shows with jet records.

  • I gotta give credit to Bernie for doing an excellent job filling in.

  • The first time I have heard this..thankyou!!

    Matt
