How I envy you! When I was very little back in the '50s we lived in some apartments across Willow Road from the plant. I wasn't supposed to cross the street, but I would sneak across and go to the back of the plant, to the flight line so I could watch the birds come and go. Those are still some of my cherished memories. I had dreamt of flying one day, but at times, dreams and life's requirements don't coincide. I am very happy for you though, and your experience in Hiller Aircraft.
My dad, William "Willie" Marquez worked at the Hiller plant at 1350 Willow Road in Palo Alto, CA for 27 years and he loved every day of it. I was privileged to see him and Stanley Hiller Jr. and Mr. Hiller's lovely bride, Carolyn, runite and reminisce at the 2005 Hiller Vertical Challenge. Now dad and Mr. Hiller are both with the angels. My love of aviation and helicopters came from that association.
About half of my helicopter time, about 8000 hrs, is in a Hiller, and most of that doing agriculture work. I would have liked to be at that 2005 Hiller get-to-gether.
We used to operate Hiller's in the UK with Management Aviation in Cambridge. Many would agree the Hiller went hand in hand with a miss-spent youth, they were great days.
Mr. John, can you tell me who shot this video? I'm the son of another pilot that flew that helicopter for Country Boy. Please contact me. Do you still have my phone #? Thanks-"P"
My old man was a factory hiller master flight test mechancic at the original hiller plant in palo alto near the bay. After he dialed in a new ship he had to go up with test pilot who put the ship through it's many maneuvers. My old man could care less about the the Santa Cruz board walk roller coasters where he dropped me off while visiting his Aunt.He said :you have never riden with Bruce Jones the factories most skilled pilot who could make you toss your cookies. KR McGuire
The first few passes were made calibrating the system on this new helicopter on its first flights of the season. This pilot flew it for three seasons when the owner (the older man) took over and flew it. He was 80 years old when he quit flying it. The helicopter was distroyed in an accident.
Wow, this guys a hell of a pilot.
I'm a bit surprised he does not wear a gas mask though.
Awesome job.
