I put my fish in a tiny fish tank were they can not move at all..I know it sounds cruel but it almost gives them time to like either regain equilibrium or if its damage caused by a ripped fin. I had 3 fish do this and i put them all in the fish tank (1 gallon fish tank) for about 4 days to a week and I put them back in...I find to treat the water more than it recommends. For a 30 gallon it recommend 2 caps and i put about 3-4 caps in.
I have 20 comet goldfish. One started doing this, I isolated him in a hospital tank for a few days and he was fine put him back in the tank. Now two of them are doing it (i believe the one was the same fish that was doing it before). I heard it was swim bladder or a hurt fin. But i treated them with melafix for bacteria infection and fin damage. I cannot figure out what is wrong with my two fish now.
my fish lived! I isolated them for 3 days then decided that maybe the water was bad. I did a complete water change treated twice with aqausafe and placed them all into the tank never had this problem again. My mother changed the water before this happened and didn't treat it well with aquasafe I think it was toxic metals that hurt them. I isolated them as soon as this happened in a small tank where they couldn't move much so they can regain balance and enjoy free new treated water
Found this video because I have 3 goldfish and they are ALL DOING THIS! it only seems to be affecting the comets. My mollies and platys are all fine. No one here seems to have a definite solution though.
So sorry! Mine died. I suspect neurological damage from something toxic in the water...maybe a nitrite spike after a cleaning, and for some reason he was worst hit?
Still, I hope there's a chance for your fishies! Have you tried isolating them in a hospital tank?
You'd think there'd be an answer out there...we can't be the only ones. But, from what I've read, it can't be that whirling disease...not in goldfish.
There is a cure!!! My goldfish just recovered from this exact same problem. He has a bacterial infection. Maracyn is the brand name. Active ingredient is erythromycin. There are three different types of Maracyn products. All have different ingredients. Make sure it is Maracyn and not Maracyn-two. I used Maracyn-two and had no success because Maracyn 2 has the main ingredient called minocycline. My goldfish had been spinning exactly like this for over a month and is completely cured now.
I'm pretty sure that fish has whirling disease! you need to clean the rest of your tank and get ride of that fish before the rest of your fish continue to die from catching the disease!
Our fish is doing this, too. I'm surprised he's still alive. I just put some salt in the tanks, as per the advice of some fish website I found. It's very strange. It happened after I switched food, but that might not be the problem. My water is a very strong chlorine smell. I'm wondering if that is the problem. Maybe I'm not treating the water enough.
Yeah, that's what I thought too! But, from what I could find online, whirling disease only gets salmonids which are, I guess, things like trout. I couldn't find anything about goldfish and whirling disease. But I still don't know what caused him to get like this.
Thanks for asking. He had a miraculous recovery for one day, then he returned to corkscrewing, and died five days later. I didn't want to euthanize him, because I thought that there was a chance he'd get better, like the first time. I'm still not sure if it was due to bad water conditions, or whether he really did hit his head or otherwise suffer some sort of neurological damage.
It's swim bladder disease. And if you want it fixed, feed him thawed peas (shelled) or finely minced garlic.

Ive had one platy do this before, and my molly just started doing it today. I fear my poor molly is going to pass away soon because my platy died

Perhaps because it's an in-bred feeder fish, not a pet. Take that into consideration?

I'm so sorry! I isolated mine, he got better, then got bad again. All I can figure out is that some sort of neurological damage.
It's so surprising that there aren't definitive answers out there, since this seems to have happened to other people, too.
Again, sorry that your fishie is not doing well! How is your water quality? Did anything in the tank change before/after it happened?

Sadly it's cleaning your tank too often that does this, it is actually burning its gills trying to breathe. you need to let good bacteria build up.

Looks like "Whirling Disease", although I don't know if it's contractible by anything other than trout
