when i go fishing for tautogs im never able to set the hook and when i feel a hit it always seems like i get stuck on the bottom. so how do i set the hook on tautogs correctly?
After it does a consecutive bite and "takes the bait", I yank it up and you have to keep reeling. Tautogs tend to go underneath rocks after they eat the bait so you can not give them the chance to do that. If the fish does go underneath the rock, it's a hassle to undo the line and make the jig again. I have been blackfishing for about 4 years now.
I'm living in Cali and i miss the south Jersey shore life more than anything! Babes at Longport and babes on the boardwalk at OC. Blue crabs FTMFW! And GE inlet flounder and weakies! Those offshore wreck fished Tog's are nice as hell too!
This boat is out of Perth Amboy? I love to go fishing and just begun. I live in the next town of Perth Amboy. I like to go fishing at their Pier, but I haven't caught anything yet. Nice video. I'd like to know more info about this boat and such. Thanks !!
Been fisdhing my whole life but did tautog fishing for my first time just a week ago.. alot different then the fluke and striped bass im used to.... but like anything else i guess u have to keep going to get the hang of it.. great video... where in nj?? im right off barnegat inlet
Yes there is a feel you need to hit them. I love the black fish. We go out of Perth Amboy, we do most of our fishing just down from sandy hook. Off the reef along there. Thanks for the comment. My folks have a place on LBI.
Ive seen some weird things with tautog heads too, just some misshapen fish. Some species of fish all look the same, Blacks are each very individual though.
I take only 1 off just before it goes on the hook. The other guys take all the legs and claws off. We try everything, as you know. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I aight a beauty black fish today. its too bad that it was out of seasonit was 17 1/2in. had t throw it back

What did you use as bait?
tasmania105 1 year ago
@tasmania105 We used green crabs, cutting off the legs and cutting the whole thing in half, on the larger ones. tiny ones were used whole.

Nice fishing guys. I fish mostly southern Jersey. When you declaw the green crabs, you guys take the claws all off or leave them on?
