  • JUST IMAGINE HAVING A GRANDFATHER LIKE MJH. Whenever i hear a song of him i am overwhelmed. He resembles my grandfather. His voice, pure and soft, was gentle and full of love even when he would swear. His gentle nature, family loving character often seems to embrace the resemblance of the two. My grandfather wasn't able to hate anyone. He only kept his distance from evil men. Whenever i look at one of MJH's pictures i see my grandfathers smile. but the eyes is where the magic happens.

  • His eyes like my grandfather's,seem to have the blessing of an angel within them. I just needed to see my grandfather's look to know that nothing can hurt me. And my god what a joyful man he was.I ran from school to the bus that took me to my country-side every friday night, eager to see him again. My heart fills of joy and grief whenever i remember going on the crop fields with him(he was a farmer in his late time) and worked the corn or the vineyard. oh simple, beautiful times.

  • In the ninth grade he was diagnosed with throat cancer(he was a professional welder 40 years).

My mother had to go in Bucharest at his hospital. She wouldn't take me with her because i had a precarious situation at school and couldn't afford missing anymore. Screw that. I humped in the first bus and headed for Bucharest myself.this was my last chance, maybe,to see him. I looked through the hospital's room window and seen that he was worried, troubled with all of his relatives beside him.

  • There is nothing more uplifting and saint till this day than the smile he gave me when he saw me entering that door. He couldn't take his eyes off me,and neither I could look elsewhere in the room.We didn't talked of grief, even on his death bed. We only laughed. He knew he was going in a better place. I hope he will wait for me. the world seems so evil and dull without him. HAPPY BIRTHDAY VOICA NICU,HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN SMITH HURT( both sharing even the birth date of 8 march)

I LOVE MJH MORE THAN MY MARTIN, DOBRO, STELLA ECT...COMBINED.

  • PSALM 16:8..."I have set the Lord always before ME, because He is at MY right hand,

I SHALL NOT BE MOVED" :)

  • The great ones have passed

  • Wonderfull guitarist and singer, sadly missed

  • one person has some serious problems.

  • I learned this song in Church, its about trusting in God and not being moved by things happening around you.Love it

  • I could cry all day listening to MJH

  • Loved this song, its about not giving up, not being pushed around, and not giving up your protesting. So appropriate in today's world but I believe the song first appeared in the 1930's.

  • @12dogpal this is an african american spiritual song probably over 150 years old.

  • this night.. just now.. has been My first exposure to Mississippi John Hurt.. and while hearing this song.. if I were to say that My eyes were dry, I would be lying.

  • well, my mom was very political and I didn't learn this song from her..........actually, sang this song in grade school am sure that if any music teacher taught this song to child these days they'd be terminated. Praise the Lord, I am from a different era and I had really great teachers, teachers that cared, in those days it was truly a calling, not a profession.

  • Are you on Facebook? I know it can eat all your time and strength, but it has some things to offer, even though it's gotten stricter about knowing the people you send to. Anyway, that was a cute note and we may have more in common. We almost have to.

  • Such a meek and old voice singing such words of defiance . The contrast is... well...moving....

  • Hosni Mubarak is singning this right about now!

  • Reminds me of my Buddy Billy Kuksuk...

  • Old John moved me many years ago. Had to learn to play that way. I can...some...not like the master! He was a thing of beauty, and contributed priceless goods to the folk revival. Still some of the best blues of all time came from him.

  • @relliboi13 God bless you Rell! Please tell me you are teaching your kids the guitar and music. Pass this national treasure on for the good of humanity. Priceless genes.

  • Oh, man!

Has there ever been a finer, more gentlemanly musician than the late and very great Mississippi John Hurt?

That guitar technique is positively sublime, and that signature gentle growl singing would pacify an enraged gorilla.

John Hurt may be gone, but he shall never be forgotten.

  • @PinkOld

I couldn't have said it better myself, and I can write. In the mid-60s I was a protestor against racism, where we would go to the Boston Common to back up Martin Luther King and SNCC, and this is one of the songs we always sang, before and after King was slaughtered. I only wished I'd been in Washington, DC when King gave his famous speech and said "I might not get there with you." We're not there now, but his assassination stopped him from being there a long time ago.

  • @PinkOld

I could not have said it better myself. My parents were not perfect, but their politics were, and I'm glad that we did not rebel against them, so I sang that song many times.

  • @snarlacarla

    Ahh shucks!

  • @PinkOld

I could not have said it better myself. My parents were not perfect, but their politics were, and I'm glad that we did not rebel against them, so I sang that song many times, but never like Mississippi John Hurt, a personal hero.

  • @PinkOld only john hartford..but i wouldnt say one was better than the other. cut from the same cloth in my opinion.

  • @PinkOld That man really is sanctified and holy. I am sure Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Randy Rhoads are taking guitar lessons from him in heaven right now :)

  • @PinkOld Splendid, what playing and what a voice. Beautiful hymn.

  • @PinkOld Been hearin this man with his beautiful words and all since I was young...he makes my heart happy and sometimes sad. I from Mississippi too and appreciate all the feelings he gives to any of us who listen. Been really down and out too...and aint boo hooin over it just know. Be pleased with his sound and his heart as I surly do...Ms. Girl.

  • Who sings this rich, this deep, this soulful anymore? Wonderful. I feel like quitting my job and travelling through the backwoods capturing all the oldtimers who strum on their back porch. Priceless.

  • @EdSZiomek

    Aye

John Hurt was a national treasure.

  • Thank you for posting this. Difficult not to be moved by this rendention.
