  • why dont we have people like this man running our goverment people connect to the nature in this way

  • super trippy

  • Stars blow up, synthesizing more elements and hurtling them into space, but planets don't blow up in this way, so nature cannot completely recycle. Now, I don't feel so bad *eyeroll* .

  • God is explained in this video perfectly. Our one god. As opposed to the innumerable amounts of other gods out in the rest of the cosmos. All born of the cataclysm and reborn multiple times after birth. With each rebirth they destroy and create. One day... God will die and won't come back.

  • You could call it G:d. I call it Cosmos.

  • @shackupyourstruly A star is merely one part of the cosmos. I called stars "gods" because of their ability to create and sustain things. As others seem to call things with such power gods. This one, the sun, would be our god: The star that was most likely to have provided the material and energy to create us and our planets. Nothing mythical intended, I was just kinda naming things according to these thoughts.

  • Funny how mormon advertisements end up in Carl Sagan videoes..

  • the one dislike is the pope

  • Carl Sagan keeps mind-fucking me and I love it!

  • "Born from the ashes of stellar alchemy, we are star stuff harvesting products of starlight. Through our eyes stars have developed sight, can see themselves and contemplate their own existence. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself"

  • We don't deserve this planet!

  • I got the 3 cd pack for this for free just because my dad's a doctor :D

  • 1 Person preferred the "Free Bible" Ad on the right hand side.

  • This guy is nothing I can describe. Just simply amazing.

  • The stuff of stars, God is still there; just another detail to name the Creation.

  • @WOWJBEOWULF

    God is a fairytale.

  • @Uteko95 He's a fairytale as much as I am.

The question is, then, am I?

  • @7heFlyingDutchman Playin with words won't validate bronze age mythology, my friend.

  • @SigDrums Look, even if science manages to prove God doesn't exist (and there's no way to do that in the first place), I'd still stick with my faith.

It gives life some sort of meaning, and it gives me some sort of hope.

Infinitely more than, "When you die, you die, game over."

    See what I mean?

  • @7heFlyingDutchman I can not have a discussion with a mind like yours - determined and ignorant. I'm sorry, but the basis of my philosophy is the ability to correct and be corrected.

This is what annoys me the most with religious doctrines - instead of being thankful for the life you have been given you crave an infinity more. Downright ignorant.

  • @SigDrums I fail to see how I am ignorant.

If you can prove that God doesn't exist, I'll be glad to hear it.

Will I accept his nonexistence if you do? Logically?

    Yes. I will.

Will I still attend church and pray, etc?

    Yes, I will.

It's a great community and a sense of something greater in life.

Again, meaning and hope and confidence in making through the the end.

    And I quite like that.

    Anything wrong with that?

  • @7heFlyingDutchman You can not disprove the existance of Zeus, but we both know the mythology is ridiculous. I just take it one step further by adding the same logic to Christianity.

I think we are at a brink in human history where truth is essential. Religion let's people think they know things they do no - this is dangerous.

The world is beautiful without dogma and superstition. Scientific litteracy is the most empowering and beautiful feeling I've ever felt.

  • @SigDrums The thing is, scientific 'literacy' also says you're nothing.

Is there anything wrong with trying to give my existence some meaning?

    Give myself some hope?

I mean, my faith (I'm a conservative Christian) says that I work for the good of all around me. Kindness, honesty, integrity, all those "Fruits of the Holy Spirit..."

Surely you don't wish I didn't have those, right?

I mean, that can't be a bad thing.

In my faith, I try to better the world and support others. Is that so bad?

  • @7heFlyingDutchman No, helping others is good. I'm volenteer as a solidarity worker my self. But I do it in the name of solidarity, and not in the interest of eternal salvation. Christianity has several evil aspects I bet you don't believe in, such as punishment for homosexuality and such. But to pick the aspects of said religion which suits your needs is just stupid and egoistic.

  • @SigDrums I don't do good in the interest of salvation, that's a fairly common misconception. I do good because (I believe) I already have salvation, and doing good is a side-effect. I do good because of my faith and subsequent salvation, not for it.

And the stoning for homosexuality is, again, a misconception. The stoning is only for actual acts of homosexuality or fornication or adultery. Even then, extra-Biblical sources say the hebrews didn't really carry that out anyway

    Just public disgrace

  • @SigDrums And I'm not really suiting my own needs.

Giving time and money (quite a lot of it, actually) to help others is certainly not in my personal gain.

Again, it isn't to gain salvation, I already have that.

It's just because that's what I'm told to do.

And besides, the only Christians that would ever advocate any of those supposed evils in Christianity would be Westboro Baptist Church, and everyone, including actual Christians, would condemn them vehemently.

  • @7heFlyingDutchman You ask is it so bad? Helping people is never bad. But as soon as the faithful tell others what to think, pass laws to suit their superstitions and force their beliefs on others, that is when religion steps over the line. The fact is everywhere we look in the world, religion launders the hatred and bigotry of those who would implement their beliefs on our lives. Believe what you like, but keep it to yourself. And keep your money to yourself, your church doesn't need it.

  • @Drweavil I agree. Religious beliefs can't be forced on other people, and the Church and State should be kept separate. I'll tell someone about what I believe if they ask, but otherwise, I don't go around shoving it down people's throats.

We're mostly on the same page, I don't slap people in the face with my beliefs any more than you do.

My church does need the money to continue operation, btw.

  • @7heFlyingDutchman

I feel like religion as a whole discourages people from truly helping others.. I think alot of people are compassionate and attribute that quality in themselves to religion or their God.. How are you so sure you are already saved by the way?

  • @robman8855 I don't understand what you intend to say.

I don't think there are many humanitarian aid organizations that do good works in the name of secularity.

You might be mistaken with the attributing. I'm fairly certain most people have a degree of goodness in them, yes, but that some will attribute that quality in themselves to God.

As in, they are this way innately because of God, as a part of human nature, and not made that way after accepting whatever faith.

    I don't, but I meet the terms

  • @7heFlyingDutchman

If I could put links in this youtube comment I would send you several the webpages of several secular organizations that I personally support that contribute to humanitarian aide.

The other point I was trying to make you seem to agree with. People aren't good after accepting religion, they are that way inherently. Because of Inherent human goodness I think that organized religion as a whole only contributes negatively to society.

still how do you know you will be saved?

  • @robman8855 So, you will contribute to secular humanitarian aid organ., and I will to religious. To each his own.

I still can't see how religion has a negative impact on society. Examples?

    Honestly, I don't know 100%. I don't.

There is a chance I'm totally wrong in everything I believe in, I accept that.

That's the whole part about faith. I don't know, but I really hope so, and I'm putting stock in it.

  • @7heFlyingDutchman haven't you ever hear about holy war? religion is violence it self...

  • @7heFlyingDutchman "I still can't see how religion has a negative impact on society. Examples?"

I suspect you are simply trolling, but if your question was posed honestly, here ya go:

Slaughter of the Midianties, the Hittites, etc. (see Ancient Hebrew history)

The dozen or so Crusades - yes there were THAT many, and all violent and bloody.

    Salem Witch Trials

    Spanish Inquisition

    Bigotry against gays

Racism in general - did you know you MUST be a Christian in order to join the KKK?

  • @Gooberlicious54 I'm not trolling, I apologize if it comes across that way.

Yeah, I can't deny any of those, but I don't support any of them either.

  • @7heFlyingDutchman Well, can you tell us ways that religion has furthered society? I personally believe it is purely a cancer destroying mankind.

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas I can't speak for most other religions, but Judeo-Christian values and principles are (or were, depending on your point of view...) the basis for our justice systems.

I can understand how some religions are destructive, but can you point out what's destructive about Christianity?

  • @7heFlyingDutchman Some religions believe that the only way to reach their form or equivalent of 'Heaven' is to spread the word of their religion to others. If they do not adapt, they will be destroyed or forced. Christianity has done this in the past. Come into a society doing just fine, except to the them they are misguided because they don't believe in the one almighty 'God'.

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas Alright, but would you agree that the vast majority of Christians are perfectly normal people?

None of the major sects of Christianity teach that we have to spread the word to reach heaven. In fact, most spread the word just because they believe it and want others to share in the good fortune they've found.

Believe me, people don't go do that when you tell them to. They have to do it on their own.

And can you name a society that was founded in atheism?

  • @7heFlyingDutchman Atheists are typically more independent, I can't see them forming a society. But there is an abnormal amount of christian people who take the religion too seriously, even disowning their own kids if they refuse to believe in a god. Not to mention the WBC. They are just disgraceful to mankind as a whole. Google them if you don't know who they are.

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas I know who WBC is, and yeah, they're disgraceful to everyone. No one supports them. Actual Christians don't support them.

From an Atheistic standpoint, sure, too many people take religion seriously.

From a religious standpoint, it's the opposite.

Not enough people take their religion seriously.

There are crazies with any belief. The point is, if everyone practiced what they believed, we wouldn't even be having this conversation, y'know?

  • @WOWJBEOWULF welke god ? Wordt wakker man !

  • Somebody missed the like button

  • my head just exploded....im typing this right now without a head

  • Star children? You can tell this guy smoked weed.

  • @soppetive we zien wel o,wetende

  • Carl said, "We are star stuff" and "a way for the cosmos to know itself."

All the atoms on earth and in our bodies came from supernova that blew up over 5 billion years ago.

Aren't we really all walking, talking stardust -- this cosmos become AWAKE and looking back at itself? -- and aren't we intimately connected to it all?

We are this wonder called life become AWAKE

    Please enjoy the dance.

And ultimately there's nothing that separates us from others in this grand mystery. Please be kind.

  • @goog2k Aye friend!

  • Does anybody know the name of the beautiful song appearing from 0:00 through 0:17?

  • CARL SAGAN is the wise man of all time.

    Carl lives on.

HE IS AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL OF US.

  • If anyone knows, what's the name of the piece of music in the beginning of the vid?

  • Sagan said, "We are star stuff" and "a way for the cosmos to know itself."

All the atoms on earth and in our bodies came from supernova that blew up over 5 billion years ago.

Aren't we all just walking, talking stardust -- this cosmos become AWAKE and looking back at itself? -- and aren't we intimately connected to it all?

  • Unfortunately, you need to truly understand chemistry, biology and physics to understand.

    Please watch:

Symphony of Science - The Poetry of Reality (An Anthem for Science)

    /watch?v=9Cd36WJ79z4

    &

Symphony of Science - 'We Are All Connected' (ft. Sagan, Feynman, deGrasse Tyson & Bill Nye)

    /watch?v=XGK84Poeynk

  • @goog2k I don't think you "truly" need to understand chem, bio, and physics to get it. A basic rudimentary grasp of the important discoveries we have made over the past 400 years can provide a person with a wonderful new perspective on the majesty and elegance of our amazing universe. I think this was what Carl Sagan was truly trying to achieve through the Cosmos series. :)

I would recommend in addition to the songs these books:

The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene

  • @jdunstangaren

    continued....

Fabric of the Cosmos - Brian Greene

Death by Black Hole - Neil deGrasse Tyson

The Dragons of Eden - Carl Sagan

The Unknown Universe - Richard Hammond

There are definately others but these are the ones I have found most interesting over the past 5 years. If somebody wants to recommend some books that focus more on chem or bio I'd love to hear some good ones. :)

  • @jdunstangaren JEEZ, we're so happy you've blessed us with your profound understanding.

So, I guess you're saying Carl was wrong when he said, "We are star stuff" and "a way for the cosmos to know itself."

Is that what you were saying?

Oh yeah, BTW, what exactly are you trying to say??? :)

  • @goog2k Sorry didn't mean to offend. You said "Unfortunately, you need to truly understand chemistry, biology and physics to understand." I just don't think it takes a strong formal education in those subjects to grasp the meaning of "We are star stuff".The book recommendations are just other neat explorations of modern science and where current thinking is on some really interesting topics like our understanding of the nature of spacetime(for anyone who is interested). It all blows my mind :'D.

  • @jdunstangaren Actually, I think some Bible thumping religious nut had quoted scripture to object to the original post.

That was a response to his objection.

I guess he's removed his objection.

    Sorry, for the misunderstanding.

  • RIP Carl Sagan

  • now I need to find this series and purchase the shit out of it

  • @TurboSpaghettiRobot it's on hulu now.

  • @TurboSpaghettiRobot U can check out the entire series at guba dot com, just type in "cosmos" in the search.

    Cheers!

  • @TurboSpaghettiRobot -- its online

  • @TurboSpaghettiRobot i found a carl sagan dvd set but its like 120 bucks i dont mind im just tryin to find it cheaper any ideas? I use torrents but dont use torrents on things i enjoy and truly want to support =)

  • I wish I had one one hundredth of Carl's insight

  • eat magic mushrooms, and look through a telescope for a few hours ;-)

    Seriously...

  • Ok, just tell me where I can buy Shrooms.... and buy a telescope.

  • "We & the other animals are parasites on the planet"

    Gloomy view but so true

  • He said that "We & the other animals are parasites on the PLANTS", not planet.

He was commenting on how we all depend on the sun, you warped it into saying that we're destroying the planet, which wasn't at all what he was saying.

  • Alright steady on - point taken, I didn't warp it at all, I simply got it wrong...geez...

  • More like a cancer. Now that's gloomy but true.

Parasites are the rest of the animal kingdom, the beings that cannot harm the earth or rape it.

  • Yes, but we're the only species of intelligence and power to stop what we're doing. Well, the lot of us, anyways. Various DNA mutations and/or indoctrinated beliefs (just chemical processes taking place in the brain)among many humans prohibit them from becoming viable stuards of this planet.

  • I'm 27.

And I wouldn't consider it so bad to a be labeled a parasite. Apparently, a lot of parasites have earned the right of a continued existence, us includedd. We don't make our own food like plants, we feed off plants and other parasites--animals like cows and chickens. Many parasites have symbiotic relationships with their hosts. As we better observe our earth and universe, we can become more considerate parasites for the good of all beings and things. That's the direction we're headed.

  • Prove God exists and I will admit you are right.

  • @wmcdo1

He answered it in his previous reply

'I wouldn't consider it so bad to a be labeled a parasite'

  • @cobrajeff96 Nothing to prove as He exists without your knowing and there is only one way to change you not knowing.

  • @cobrajeff96 maybe we should have be extincted after all the cows, chikens and edible plants were run out, but we find a way to bend nature to our needs, so we created artificial cows and chickens and edible plants to feed us. that might be the anomaly. in nature evolution is an option, extinction is the rule .

  • @cobrajeff96 But unfortunately those who hold all the wealth and power have metathesized a mutation in one of their vital organs: their brain, and seem to be operating with only the root part of their reptilian stem.

  • @cobrajeff96

There is a marked difference between parasitism and symbiosis. It is true that we humans are parasites, but the rest of nature lives in symbiosis with the plants. Animals only take as much as they need, and rarely without human intervention does any one species end up dominating an envoronment too heavily. A parasite by nature weakens it's host, a symbiotic relationship is one of mutual benefit, or at least, one that does not cause harm to either party.

  • @BunnaySango

I wouldn't be so quick to say all that. Vines can suffocate trees. Hey, trees inadvertently compete with eachother for sun anyways. Ever see the baboons down in South Africa? Observe them for a little while before you say animals only take as much as they need. Some big cat species will defend a kill for days as long as they have a pack to feed.

  • @cobrajeff96

You raise some good points, but no other animal besides man has weakened the earth the way we have. Volcanoes may cause pollution once every couple decades, but humans pollute constantly. Humans take more than any animal could. And yes, plants and animals compete with each other, but they don't harm the earth to a level that is actually threatening to our very existence. Man has also sped up the process of extinction for many animals.

  • @BunnaySango

You'll find no arguments from me there. It is true. Humans have done great damage to each other and earth. I'm not sure if many other animals besides humans hold grudges or try to expand their control beyond their own physical reach, but there's no doubt we're the highest evolved intelligence in the world. And evidently, even that carries a price. Kinda makes ya wonder if any intelligence out there beyond earth has annihilated itself before venturing out to seek other life.

  • @cobrajeff96 Check out the Drake equation. We as humans have come to that critical point, we have unlocked the power of the atom and now we must as a species seek out life in the universe.

  • @cobrajeff96 I hope you're right, for the sake of the species.

  • I love this video!! Thanks for uploading :D
