Is there a way to live in a dorm room solo and not have to pay an arm and a leg?

I very much want to live in a dorm room, just not with a random stranger. The concept of living with someone you don't know and being responsible for that persons safety is risky and aggravating to me.

I do not wish to become a babysitter, in making certain that my mysterious roommate doesn't get hammered or sniff crack, which would involve both my roommate and I getting sent to prison and expelled.
