They are listed as "Vulnerable" "Endangered" by the IUCN. An illegal pet in Japan and United States. Popularity due to YouTube videos showing them being tickled.

Why do the Slow Loris belong more in the wild than dogs and cats?

Dogs and Cats were wild animals once so who gets to say that THIS particular animal can't be bred into a pet if this doesn't hurt the wild population?

And it's not like Cats and dogs can't make it without us. If you leave a population of cats in the forrest it only takes a few generation to have them back to their wild self again and it is the same thing with dogs.

@Salladsdressing A cat left to it's own devices will go feral in a couple days to weeks not a few generations. Once it can get a few kills in, it is good to go.

Retarted comment, a wild cat learns it hunting skills from its mother, it also learns what critters to avoid, such as snakes and big spiders. A domesticated cat will never be able to pass on such knowledge to their youngs, since they never experienced themselves, and releasing a domesticated cat into the wild, will kill it in a short amount on time. The domestic cat is the most efficient hunting animal on this planet with the exception of the persian as it's skull shape prevents an efficient kill bite. On the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species all 5 species of Slow Loris are listed as vulnerable or endangered. All populations are listed as decreasing.

These animals are harvested from the wild to become pets, their habitat is shrinking and once captured a third of infant loris' die in transit from a lack of maternal care. The population of the Javan Slow Loris has halved in just 20 years primarily due to the pet trade.

The desire to own these animals is driving them towards extinction.

It is pitiful to see a rare wild animal being treated like a domestic pet simply for some ones idle amusement. The slow loris is a highly endangered, nocturnal primate living in the treetops of the tropical rainforest. To see one living in such an alien environment with no regard for its natural needs, purely for human entertainment, is downright cruel.

Really, then why is it that slow lorises live about twice the expected wild lifespan when they are in captivity. They have been known to live anywhere from 20-26 years in captivity, as opposed to about 11 in the wild.

it seems from a bit of research that its not the poachers but the rainforests being destroyed, that causes the depletion in these creatures. Some people have them as pets and some go to zoos and the majority dies or is poached. I for would say give them a house or a zoo because they cant go back to a rainforest that isnt there.

Keeping slow lorises as pets supports their illegal capture from the wild, its against the law, is cruel and ultimately is leading to their extinction.
