sorry too late,

E4 series can run with coupling with other formation, E3 or E4 series (Formerly 400 series)

E1: 12 cars ,1235 seats per formation, Steel Body.

E4: 8 cars, 817 seats per formation,Aluminum Body.

Shinkansen is limited the length per formation, max 400m (=16 cars).
