I've seen so many drummers do this, they move so quickly I could never figure out how it was done. Thank you so much for clarifying this. It's not nearly as complicated s I though.
it's obvious that you were a drum mager in high school.? the part where you talk about incorporating the flash sticking in music and having it mess up ypur timeing is true .your a good teacher
Man I have to say I want to learn how to spin the I guess useless way but this is definitely the more important one to learn seeing as how it's so easy to implement into playing. Just want to say ty this is the most brilliant technique for live performance I have learned yet by far. With practice you can really turn some heads on stage if you can pull this trick fast enough! even if people don't think it's hard cause you don't really spin the sticks it still looks awesome! TY GREAT TUTORIAL! : D
dude the the twirl takes up just as much time as the spinning, and spinning takes more skill, especially to incorporate it into drumming, and in fact you can spin and play at the same time, it makes drumming more stylish for stylish people. but yeah spinning, if youre good at it, can be done quickly enough to create no time lag in your playing at all.
@IIEnlightenedII True but the fact is this is WAY easier then actually spinning the sticks. I want to learn both but this is awesome for a quick trick as in I need to learn it for a huge show I have next week. I feel a lot safer "twirling" then spinning for the time being. Even if I could spin like a pro this technique is really easy really kewl and LOOKS GOOD! And in the long run thats all that matters. Rather impress a crowd of 200 hundred people then just 1 stuck up drummer like you.
@Dagg3r89 im still practicing a bit myself, and it is hard, you're right some people do just have a nack for it, but still i believe everyone has the potential for it if they set their mind to it.
ok... it took you 2:45 to actully tell us how to. the rest your just repeating yourself about twirling. i dont get it tho? your like flicking your wrist back when your doing a slow demo, but normally your just pulling your right point down to push the stick up
Hi - well it is a little different for different peope, but MOST often if the stick is traveling thn there are two likely causes. One the fingers are too tight on the stick making a firm V shape means the stick can only slip out more easily. As you get better you will tend to relax the hand and it sticks better. The other thing is the tip of the index finger - give it a little curl in through every spin as shown to hold the stick down into the V. Good luck!
Thanx, That was semi helpful. it is improving and seems to be stable at slow speeds. Will just have to practice. My drum teacher does it really fast and he says that everytime it starts travelling he eases his fingers a bit but when i try easing it flies out. i have to find that balance so i dont let it off too easy.
Great tutorial but I disagree bout spinning. It is a great move and it has better show than twirling. And not all drumming is full on with both hands. I do spinning when there is a 1/4 or 1/2 note pose
Is this the trick that the drummer does in this video " /watch?v=haeyj-aLuAE&feature=channel ", he does it quick, but close up at around 2:07

i can do it fine, but i dont seem to have the "finger strength", or whatever, to do it fast...can anyone tell me why i cant seem to do it fast?

The "Fake Twirl" is the better and more real twirl, but i use both. Better to have more on hand, right?.

@cacahut Actually 2 weeks after i posted that i mastered it. Got it down on my left hand too. Thanks for the advice though ^_^
