Many of our founding fathers and mothers were Humanists with a eutopian view upon arriving to this new land. Many of them were Unitarians. Not fundamentalist Christians. I am not saying that Christians are undesirable, but they are only part of the story. We all have a piece of the truth .I wish people knew their history in a more complete way! Also, Jesus was from the Middle East! If he were here today, certain people would label him a terrorist. I admire this artists passion.
First, it reflects too much of a "God with us" way of viewing ourselves. It is, in a sense, too parochial and limiting of Divine blessing and favor. Second, by having the Christ figure hold (whats looks to me to be) the Declaration of Independence and how he holds it, the painting seems to make a certain claim for the sanctity of that document, placing it on a par with Sacred Scripture. As important as this and the other documents of our country are, Sacred Scripture they are not.
I think it is lovely, but...Jesus needed to have a little darker skin. I am not african american, but...Jesus was not a really white character. Just look at the people in the Arabic country today.
