  • @SailorBlue1492 We're not "unbelievers" in the sense that you're referring to. We just don't believe in myths and we don't mistake an artist's vision as the truth! The Founding Fathers were deists who happened to come from a Christian background. But they were smart enough to know that church and state should be separated and that no ONE religion be the basis of any nation's foundation. No one begrudges you your faith, but we DO begrudge when people try to mix their BELIEFS with historical fact.

By the way, Jesus would have probably been labeled a socialist. He didn't have job, made no money and went around preaching mostly not in accordance with the religious practices of his day.

  • @onclave6 You must not be so devoted if you feel your faith can be removed because symbols, or text references to God are taken out of government buildings etc. And you are naive to think that a proclamation of God in the government means it will be fair and just. Some of the worst atrocities in history were committed under the guise of "christian" leadership. Such a painting as the one above shows that most people have not changed much since the crusades.

  • Jon, in explaining each person in his piece, has stirred our hearts to search our position in American history. My story, your story, all blend together to create an American story for those behind us. The arts be it on canvas, stage or in music are all designed to make us think. How do we relate to God? How do we relate to others? What can we do to improve the space where we live? Jon has studied well and has achieved that goal.

  • MLK was a follower of Gandhi (nonviolence) and would not appreciate having his name on a military uniform. I consider myself a Christian, but, there is something very wrong with this painting. Our country is for all religions not just the Christian religion.

  • But these men were Christians. That was the basis of our nation. And we are in deed a predominately Christian nation. Sorry, go count. We are indeed entitled to rejoice in our Christian origins.

  • @jdog43 The Constitution was in no way influenced by the Bible. Look at the Bible, then look at the Constitution. Please notice that no where in the Bible does it mention separation of powers, a representative legislature, executive branch, age requirements for officer holders, the ratification of amendments, etc. The founders got their ideas from Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Montesquieu, not Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  • Many of our founding fathers and mothers were Humanists with a eutopian view upon arriving to this new land. Many of them were Unitarians. Not fundamentalist Christians. I am not saying that Christians are undesirable, but they are only part of the story. We all have a piece of the truth .I wish people knew their history in a more complete way! Also, Jesus was from the Middle East! If he were here today, certain people would label him a terrorist. I admire this artists passion.

  • First, it reflects too much of a "God with us" way of viewing ourselves. It is, in a sense, too parochial and limiting of Divine blessing and favor. Second, by having the Christ figure hold (whats looks to me to be) the Declaration of Independence and how he holds it, the painting seems to make a certain claim for the sanctity of that document, placing it on a par with Sacred Scripture. As important as this and the other documents of our country are, Sacred Scripture they are not.

  • I think it is lovely, but...Jesus needed to have a little darker skin. I am not african american, but...Jesus was not a really white character. Just look at the people in the Arabic country today. Most are at least a little darker. I hate that MLK was not allowed in. More people of color were needed here. God bless America.
