Van Halen as a band seem more serious during this tour.. Maybe its just the song, but it looked like there was some problems that were ready to burst.. sadly a year later it did.. I like Roth.. But sammy is definently the better vocalist.. I miss him in VH
What I like about the Hagar era was it was more like Led Zeppelin, there'd be hard hitting rock songs like Summer Nights and then quieter more docile songs like Not Enough. I like versitility in bands thus i'm not really an AC/DC fan. My country will hate me.
@VanHalenLedZeppelin7 there was probably more versatility in the Roth era. Hagar era was very heavy on loves songs, but Roth era had more variety. Still like the Hagar era, though. idk how it reminds you of Zeppelin except in a vague sense, just imo...
My god eddie was playin clean here! I wonder what he was or wasnt doing during this tour. I know he was heavy into booze during this era. Everything after the III album it seems like eddie was doin speed or coke or some shit and his playing seems haphazard and spotty unlike this when he looks full form and at full potential. sorry if offended anyone but thats my two sense. anybody got answers or comments? was he doing heroin during this tour or oxys
@1985f350 Not sure if Eddie ever did any hardcore drugs, pretty sure he didnt. He was known for being a very heavy drinker in the late 90's and early 00's but this tour, 95, he was sober. He was bad alcoholic after this though.
Great song, thanks for sharing. To me, nothing is better than Halen / Hagar, especially Balance era. They were at their peak then, pity it turned to shit right after.
I look at these old videos and realize just how good this band was in the 80's and 90's. The guitar on carnal knowledge and balance was so well written played and recorded. I thought the sound engineering on the last tour with DLR was terrible.
One thing about Sammy ... for being a straight-up "rocker" - he could turn out some masterful lyrics. This song is a perfect example - I'm sure a ton of people can relate to this song.
These are GREAT lyrics I agree but unfortunately Sammy hasn't been able to write good lyrics since the Balance album back in 1995. Have you heard that turd called "Up For Breakfast" or "Soap On A Rope"? That's the kind of deep material Hagar is writing these days. For whatever reason, Sammy's lyrics have been silly, retarded and even embarrassing since he was removed from VH back in 1996.
in fairness, yes much of sammy's work has been sub-par in the lyric department post VH. However, this is not to say there haven't been some gems, if only more people heard them. Who has the right, Sympathy for the Human, Hallelujah, tropic of capricorn, things have changed, all good i think. just not a lot of exposure on them. and the 3 on best of both worlds are awful, clearly rushed.
Let's face it...old Van Halen Rocked...The post Dave era wasn't that bad--Eddie did bring a new sound and knocked out some great licks...but nothin' beats poping in the Dave era....
this is probably my favorite Van halen song , its the 1st time i see or hear it live , anyone have a mp3 version of this version or any other version of this tune live ?? i would love to download it ...
gotta love it! sweet lyrics and eddies crunch licks make it on of my favs from the sammy years. sorry sammy haters, this is a very good band. as it is with dave.but hell i even listen to the VH3 album.
Althought I can't stand Sammy in Van Halen. They pumped out some really good songs...and yes, Eddie was amazing. But, come clean because there is no way you can compare the Dave years with the Sammy years.
i hear ya but when the cart has left u don't wanna carry the whole load on your back u find another cart... Dave in his hey day was amazing(one of the best ever so was sammy,(montrose some say the first van halen type 4 piece band) and his solo stuff and the man still looks like he did then and can still sing all his hits and is in his 60's... its a crazy business to keep straight in most die young or burnout see britny spears. LOL.... Peace brother.
@Beez5150 A lot of people slam the Hagar era of Van Halen, to me they could do anything with Sammy, Eddie could write anything. Sammy would hear something and be able to create songs like this Van Halen was a great hard rock band with Roth and I love every bit of it, but Sammy's work with VH is just so much more they weren't one dimensional..... Van Halen has become a shadow of it's former self. As happy as I am for the new album, I'm upset of how they've treated their fans.
Eddie's tone in that intro is just gorgeous.
